In this report, we present a case of gauzoma after ovariohysterectomy in a dog. A 2.5-year-old spayed female crossbred dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Adnan Menderes University, with a seven-day history of abdominal pain, abdominal distension, vomiting, inappetence, weakness, and soft foul-smelling stool. Based on anamnesis and clinical symptoms, an abdominal mass or acute pancreatitis was suspected, radiographic and ultrasonographic findings strengthened the suspicion of an abdominal mass. Symptomatic and supportive treatment for three days did not provide any improvement. Gauzoma and localised peritonitis were finally diagnosed by the exploratory laparotomy. Unfortunately, the dog died during laparotomy. The owner noted that the dog had been overiohysterectomized in a private clinic 1.5 years ago. In conclusion, retained surgical sponge should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bitches with abnormal mass together with abdominal pain and distension which had previously been spayed

Biodesulphurized subbituminous coal by different fungi and bacteria studied by reductive pyrolysis. Part 1: Initial coal

One of the perspective methods for clean solid fuels production is biodesulphurization. In order to increase the effect of this approach it is necessary to apply the advantages of more informative analytical techniques. Atmospheric pressure temperature programming reduction (AP-TPR) coupled with different detection systems gave us ground to attain more satisfactory explanation of the effects of biodesulphurization on the treated solid products. Subbituminous high sulphur coal from ‘‘Pirin” basin (Bulgaria) was selected as a high sulphur containing sample. Different types of microorganisms were chosen and maximal desulphurization of 26% was registered. Biodesulphurization treatments were performed with three types of fungi: ‘‘Trametes Versicolor” – ATCC No. 200801, ‘‘Phanerochaeta Chrysosporium” – ME446, Pleurotus Sajor-Caju and one Mixed Culture of bacteria – ATCC No. 39327. A high degree of inorganic sulphur removal (79%) with Mixed Culture of bacteria and consecutive reduction by 13% for organic sulphur (Sorg) decrease with ‘‘Phanerochaeta Chrysosporium” and ‘‘Trametes Versicolor” were achieved. To follow the Sorg changes a set of different detection systems i.e. AP-TPR coupled ‘‘on-line” with mass spectrometry (AP-TPR/MS), on-line with potentiometry (AP-TPR/pot) and by the ‘‘off-line” AP-TPR/GC/MS analysis was used. The need of applying different atmospheres in pyrolysis experiments was proved and their effects were discussed. In order to reach more precise total sulphur balance, oxygen bomb combustion followed by ion chromatography was used

Market, morality and (just) price: the case of recycling economy in Turkey

By drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted amongst waste-pickers and recycling traders in the waste paper, plastic and scrap metal sectors, and engaging with literature from economic anthropology and history, as well as archival sources, this paper documents changing perceptions of just price, morality and fairness in the Turkish recycling market. The paper suggests that multiple markets imply multiple prices, which are contingent and contested. When dealing with price mechanisms largely outside their control, actors tend to associate a fair price with the going market price, rather than factors such as state regulation. Approaches to morality and assessments of fairness become more ambiguous when prices are mediated by actors? own practices. These range from gift relations to paternalism, envy and deception

Geographical and temporal distribution of SARS-CoV-2 clades in the WHO European Region, January to June 2020

We show the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 genetic clades over time and between countries and outline potential genomic surveillance objectives. We applied three available genomic nomenclature systems for SARS-CoV-2 to all sequence data from the WHO European Region available during the COVID-19 pandemic until 10 July 2020. We highlight the importance of real-time sequencing and data dissemination in a pandemic situation. We provide a comparison of the nomenclatures and lay a foundation for future European genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2.Peer reviewe

Inflammatory bowel disease in Turkish children

PubMed ID: 26454438Background: This study was undertaken to evaluate demographics, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings and outcomes of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Turkey. Methods: We analyzed the medical records of 127 children diagnosed with IBD (under 18 years old) between January 2004 and January 2012 in 8 pediatric gastroenterology centers. Results: Of the 127 patients, 90 (70.9%) suffered from ulcerative colitis (UC), 29 (22.8%) from Crohn’s disease (CD), and 8 (6.3%) from IBD unclassified. The mean age of the 127 patients was 11.6±4.1 years, and 11.8% of the patients were below 5 years old. Of the patients, 49.6% were male, and males were more predominant in patients with CD than in those with UC (72.4% vs. 42.2%, P=0.008; a male/female ratio of 2.62 in CD, P=0.0016). Approximately one fifth of the patients had extra-intestinal manifestations and 13.3% of the patients had associated diseases. Extraintestinal manifestations and associated diseases were more common in early onset disease [P=0.017, odds ratio (OR)=4.02; P=0.03, OR=4.1]. Of the patients, 15% had normal laboratory parameters including anemia, high platelet count, hypoalbuminemia, hypoferritinemia, and high sedimentation rate. Area under receiver operation characteristics was used to predict pancolitis in patients with UC. The values of C-reactive protein, sedimentation rate and pediatric ulcerative colitis activity were 0.61 (P=0.06), 0.66 (P=0.01) and 0.76 (P=0.0001), respectively. Four (4.4%) patients with UC underwent colectomy, and finally two (1.5%, 95% confidence interval: 0-3.7%) patients died from primary disease or complications. Conclusions: IBD is an increasing clinical entity in Turkey. Features of IBD are similar to those in other populations, but prospective multicenter studies are needed to analyze the true incidence of IBD in Turkish children. © 2015, Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
