    Product groups acting on manifolds

    We analyse volume-preserving actions of product groups on Riemannian manifolds. To this end, we establish a new superrigidity theorem for ergodic cocycles of product groups ranging in linear groups. There are no a priori assumptions on the acting groups, except a spectral gap assumption on their action. Our main application to manifolds concerns irreducible actions of Kazhdan product groups. We prove the following dichotomy: Either the action is infinitesimally linear, which means that the derivative cocycle arises from unbounded linear representations of all factors. Otherwise, the action is measurably isometric, in which case there are at most two factors in the product group. As a first application, this provides lower bounds on the dimension of the manifold in terms of the number of factors in the acting group.     Interplay between potato virus X and RNA granules in Nicotiana benthamiana

    Cytoplasmic RNA granules consist of microscopic agglomerates of mRNAs and proteins and occur when the translation is reversibly and temporally halted (stress granules, SGs) or mRNAs are targeted for decapping (processing bodies, PBs). The induction of RNA granules formation by virus infection is a common feature of mammalian cells. However, plant-virus systems still remain poorly characterized. In this work, the SG marker AtUBP1b was expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana plants to decipher how the virus infection of plant cells affects SG dynamics. We found that the hypoxia-induced SG assembly was substantially inhibited in Potato virus X (PVX)-infected cells. Furthermore, we determined that the expression of PVX movement protein TGBp1 by itself, mimics the inhibitory effect of PVX on SG formation under hypoxia. Importantly, overexpression of AtUBP1b showed inhibition of the PVX spreading, whereas the overexpression of the dominant negative AtUBP1brrm enhanced PVX spreding, indicating that AtUBP1b negatively affects PVX infection. Notably, PVX infection did not inhibit the formation of processing bodies (PBs), indicating PVX has distinct effects depending on the type of RNA granule.     Property (T) and rigidity for actions on Banach spaces

    We study property (T) and the fixed point property for actions on LpL^p and other Banach spaces. We show that property (T) holds when L2L^2 is replaced by LpL^p (and even a subspace/quotient of LpL^p), and that in fact it is independent of 1p<1\leq p<\infty. We show that the fixed point property for LpL^p follows from property (T) when 1. For simple Lie groups and their lattices, we prove that the fixed point property for LpL^p holds for any 1<p<1< p<\infty if and only if the rank is at least two. Finally, we obtain a superrigidity result for actions of irreducible lattices in products of general groups on superreflexive Banach spaces.Comment: Many minor improvement

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) represents a major health burden, with an estimated 180 million chronically infected individuals worldwide. These patients are at increased risk of developing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Infection with HCV is the leading cause of liver transplantation in the Western world. Currently, the standard of care (SoC) consists of pegylated interferon alpha (pegIFN-α) and ribavirin (RBV). However this therapy has a limited efficacy and is associated with serious side effects. Therefore more tolerable, highly potent inhibitors of HCV replication are urgently needed. Both Specifically Targeted Antiviral Therapy for HCV (STAT-C) and inhibitors that are believed to interfere with the host-viral interaction are discussed

    Ensayos de infección con Xanthomonas citri en plantas réplicas de líneas transgénicas de Citrus sinensis cv "Pineapple"

    La producción de cítricos es una de las actividades frutícolas más importantes en Argentina, contribuyendo significativamente a las exportaciones y al desarrollo económico a nivel regional. La cancrosis, causada por Xanthomonas citri subsp citri (Xcc) provoca problemas en la exportación de los cítricos y afecta con diferente severidad a distintas especies y variedades. Las estrategias biotecnológicas ofrecen herramientas prometedoras para el control de diversas bacteriosis en forma conjunta. Anteriormente este grupo de trabajo obtuvo plantas de naranja "Pineapple" transformadas con una construcción genética que favorece la acumulación constitutiva del péptido antimicrobiano (AMP) dermaseptina, cuya expresión mostró niveles de reducción de los síntomas de hasta un 50% en comparación con las plantas no transformadas. Con el objetivo de evaluar la continuidad de la resistencia a la enfermedad, en este trabajo se realizaron ensayos de infección con Xcc en plantas réplicas obtenidas de yemas de las líneas madre transgénicas. Los ensayos de infección se realizaron en cámara de crecimiento en condiciones controladas utilizando tres concentraciones distintas del inóculo. La técnica de inoculación consistió en la infiltración infra-epidérmica de las suspensiones bacterianas utilizando la mitad de la lámina. Se utilizaron siete plantas réplicas y un control no transgénico, incluyendo por cada ensayo de 4 a 9 hojas por planta. A los 21 días post-infección se recolectó y se evaluó la incidencia de cancros típicos de la enfermedad (les/cm2). Análisis preliminares de datos dan como resultado que al menos una de las líneas transgénicas réplica muestra persistencia en la reducción de síntomas de cancrosis respecto de los controles sin transformar. Estos resultados avalan que el uso de AMPs es una estrategia promisoria para el control de la cancrosis y respalda su evaluación para el control de otras enfermedades bacterianas incluido el HuanglongbingFil: Vandecaveye, Melina Antonella.     The δ subunit and NTPase HelD institute a two-pronged mechanism for RNA polymerase recycling

    Cellular RNA polymerases RNAPs can become trapped on DNA or RNA, threatening genome stability and limiting free enzyme pools, but how RNAP recycling into active states is achieved remains elusive. In Bacillus subtilis, the RNAP amp; 948; subunit and NTPase HelD have been implicated in RNAP recycling. We structurally analyzed Bacillus subtilis RNAP amp; 948; HelD complexes. HelD has two long arms a Gre cleavage factor like coiled coil inserts deep into the RNAP secondary channel, dismantling the active site and displacing RNA, while a unique helical protrusion inserts into the main channel, prying the amp; 946; and amp; 946; amp; 8242; subunits apart and, aided by amp; 948;, dislodging DNA. RNAP is recycled when, after releasing trapped nucleic acids, HelD dissociates from the enzyme in an ATP dependent manner. HelD abundance during slow growth and a dimeric RNAP amp; 948; HelD 2 structure that resembles hibernating eukaryotic RNAP I suggest that HelD might also modulate active enzyme pools in response to cellular cue

    Sex- and age-related differences in the management and outcomes of chronic heart failure: an analysis of patients from the ESC HFA EORP Heart Failure Long-Term Registry

    Aims: This study aimed to assess age- and sex-related differences in management and 1-year risk for all-cause mortality and hospitalization in chronic heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and results: Of 16 354 patients included in the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Long-Term Registry, 9428 chronic HF patients were analysed [median age: 66 years; 28.5% women; mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 37%]. Rates of use of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) were high (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-blockers and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists: 85.7%, 88.7% and 58.8%, respectively). Crude GDMT utilization rates were lower in women than in men (all differences: P\ua0 64 0.001), and GDMT use became lower with ageing in both sexes, at baseline and at 1-year follow-up. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT prescription; however, age >75 years was a significant predictor of GDMT underutilization. Rates of all-cause mortality were lower in women than in men (7.1% vs. 8.7%; P\ua0=\ua00.015), as were rates of all-cause hospitalization (21.9% vs. 27.3%; P\ua075 years. Conclusions: There was a decline in GDMT use with advanced age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT or adverse outcomes. However, age >75 years independently predicted lower GDMT use and higher all-cause mortality in patients with LVEF 6445%

    A Gaseous Argon-Based Near Detector to Enhance the Physics Capabilities of DUNE

    This document presents the concept and physics case for a magnetized gaseous argon-based detector system (ND-GAr) for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Near Detector. This detector system is required in order for DUNE to reach its full physics potential in the measurement of CP violation and in delivering precision measurements of oscillation parameters. In addition to its critical role in the long-baseline oscillation program, ND-GAr will extend the overall physics program of DUNE. The LBNF high-intensity proton beam will provide a large flux of neutrinos that is sampled by ND-GAr, enabling DUNE to discover new particles and search for new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model

    Snowmass Neutrino Frontier: DUNE Physics Summary

    The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a primary physics goal of observing neutrino and antineutrino oscillation patterns to precisely measure the parameters governing long-baseline neutrino oscillation in a single experiment, and to test the three-flavor paradigm. DUNE's design has been developed by a large, international collaboration of scientists and engineers to have unique capability to measure neutrino oscillation as a function of energy in a broadband beam, to resolve degeneracy among oscillation parameters, and to control systematic uncertainty using the exquisite imaging capability of massive LArTPC far detector modules and an argon-based near detector. DUNE's neutrino oscillation measurements will unambiguously resolve the neutrino mass ordering and provide the sensitivity to discover CP violation in neutrinos for a wide range of possible values of δCP. DUNE is also uniquely sensitive to electron neutrinos from a galactic supernova burst, and to a broad range of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), including nucleon decays. DUNE is anticipated to begin collecting physics data with Phase I, an initial experiment configuration consisting of two far detector modules and a minimal suite of near detector components, with a 1.2 MW proton beam. To realize its extensive, world-leading physics potential requires the full scope of DUNE be completed in Phase II. The three Phase II upgrades are all necessary to achieve DUNE's physics goals: (1) addition of far detector modules three and four for a total FD fiducial mass of at least 40 kt, (2) upgrade of the proton beam power from 1.2 MW to 2.4 MW, and (3) replacement of the near detector's temporary muon spectrometer with a magnetized, high-pressure gaseous argon TPC and calorimeter
