Critical design review: Speedfest Orange Team
A task was given to create a small, hand launchable, jet propelled hotliner to compete in the 30N class. The aircraft must not only demonstrate specific speed and efficiency characteristics, but it also must be easy and fast to assemble, reliable and desirable for purchase. The Oklahoma Sate Orange team developed such an aircraft that is marketed to be an attractive and stylish hotliner, and is able to travel at high speeds and turn fast. The Tempest, which was envisioned, designed, and built by the team is a forward swept aircraft that has a bottom mounted engine, and a inverted Y tail. The aircraft can be launched by hand or cart, and goes upwards of 200 mph. The task to fly for 4 minutes and fly pylons was completed on Speedfest day
Communicating employability: the role of communicative competence for Zimbabwean highly skilled migrants in the UK
Skilled migration is an increasingly important topic for both policy and research internationally. OECD governments in particular are wrestling with tensions between their desire to use skilled migration to be on the winning side in the ‘global war for talent’ and their pandering to and/or attempts to outflank rising xenophobia. One aspect that has received relatively little attention is skilled migration from the African Commonwealth to the UK, a situation in which skilled migrants have relatively high levels of linguistic capital in the language of the host country. We focus here on the case of Zimbabwe. In spite of its popular image as a failed state, Zimbabwe has an exceptionally strong educational tradition and high levels of literacy and fluency in English. Drawing on 20 in-depth interviews of Zimbabwean highly skilled migrants, we explore the specific ways in which the communicative competences of these migrants with high formal levels of English operate in complex ways to shape their employability strategies and outcomes. We offer two main findings: first, that a dichotomy exists between their high level formal linguistic competence and their ability to communicate in less formal interactions, which challenges their employability, at least when they first move to the UK; and second, that they also lack, at least initially, the competence to narrativise their employability in ways that are culturally appropriate in England. Thus, to realise the full potential of their high levels of human capital, they need to learn how to communicate competently in a very different social and occupational milieu. Social Pedagogy: Developing and Maintaining Multi-Disciplinary Relationships in Residential Child Care
The task of building and maintaining effective multi-disciplinary relationships is a constant challenge for the residential child care sector in Scotland. The absence of effective multi-disciplinary collaboration
has been cited regularly as a contributing factor to instances of poor and problematic practice. Social pedagogy has much to offer in terms of enabling the residential child care sector to address some of these
issues and assist with the task of establishing effective multi-disciplinary relationships. This article will explore how this can be achieved in practice, drawing on research based on multi-disciplinary social pedagogy training delivered in Scotland. The evidence demonstrates
that social pedagogy can begin to break down the very real barriers that often prevent residential child care practitioners from developing and maintaining multi-disciplinary relationships. It can assist with the
task of developing a shared language and understanding; the creation of a clear focus on the developmental needs of children and young people; and a more nuanced approach to dealing with issues of risk. The messages from this article will hold relevance for the professions of
residential child care, health and education and be applicable to practitioners throughout Europe and beyond
