    Detectability of giant planets in protoplanetary disks by CO emission lines

    In this paper we intend to provide an indirect method to detect Jovian planets by studying near infrared emission spectra originating in the protoplanetary disks around T Tauri stars. Our idea is to investigate whether a massive planet could induce any observable effect on the spectral lines emerging in the disks atmosphere. As a tracer molecule we propose CO, which is excited in the ro-vibrational fundamental band in the disk atmosphere to a distance of ~2-3 AU (depending on the stellar mass) where terrestrial planets are thought to form. The synthetic molecular spectral line profiles were calculated by an own developed semi-analytical double layer disk model. 2D gas dynamics were incorporated in the calculation of synthetic spectral lines. We demonstrate that a massive planet embedded in a protoplanetary disk strongly influences the originally circular Keplerian gas dynamics. The perturbed motion of the gas can be detected by comparing the CO line profiles in emission, which is emerge from planet-bearing to those of planet-free disk models. The planet signal has two major characteristics: a permanent line profile asymmetry, and short timescale variability correlated with the orbital phase of the giant planet. We have found that the strength of the asymmetry depends on the physical parameters of the star-planet-disk system, such as the disk inclination angle, the planetary and stellar masses, the orbital distance, and the size of the disk inner cavity. The permanent line profile asymmetry is caused by a disk in an eccentric state in the gap opened by the giant planet. However, the variable component is a consequence of the local dynamical perturbation by the orbiting giant planet. We show that a forming giant planet, still embedded in the protoplanetary disk, can be detected using contemporary or future high-resolution near-IR spectrographs like VLT/CRIRES and ELT/METIS.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

    Radial Growth of Qilian Juniper on the Northeast Tibetan Plateau and Potential Climate Associations

    There is controversy regarding the limiting climatic factor for tree radial growth at the alpine treeline on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we collected 594 increment cores from 331 trees, grouped within four altitude belts spanning the range 3550 to 4020 m.a.s.l. on a single hillside. We have developed four equivalent ring-width chronologies and shown that there are no significant differences in their growth-climate responses during 1956 to 2011 or in their longer-term growth patterns during the period AD 1110–2011. The main climate influence on radial growth is shown to be precipitation variability. Missing ring analysis shows that tree radial growth at the uppermost treeline location is more sensitive to climate variation than that at other elevations, and poor tree radial growth is particularly linked to the occurrence of serious drought events. Hence water limitation, rather than temperature stress, plays the pivotal role in controlling the radial growth of Sabina przewalskii Kom. at the treeline in this region. This finding contradicts any generalisation that tree-ring chronologies from high-elevation treeline environments are mostly indicators of temperature changes

    Genetic variations in APPL2 are associated with overweight and obesity in a Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>APPL1 and APPL2 are two adaptor proteins, which can mediate adiponectin signaling via binding to N terminus of adiponectin receptors in muscle cells. Genes encoding adiponectin and adiponectin receptors contribute to insulin resistance and the risk of obesity, and genetic variants of <it>APPL1 </it>are associated with body fat distribution. However, the association between genetic variations of <it>APPL2 </it>and metabolic traits remains unknown. In the current study, we aimed to test the impacts of <it>APPL2 </it>genetic variants on obesity in a Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We genotyped six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in <it>APPL2 </it>in 1,808 non-diabetic subjects. Overweight and obesity were defined by body mass index (BMI). Obesity-related anthropometric parameters were measured, including height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference. BMI and waist-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found significant evidence of association with overweight/obesity for rs2272495 and rs1107756. rs2272495 C allele and rs1107756 T allele both conferred a higher risk of being overweight and obese (OR 1.218, 95% CI 1.047-1.416, <it>p </it>= 0.011 for rs2272495; OR 1.166, 95% CI 1.014-1.341, <it>p </it>= 0.031 for rs1107756). After adjusting multiple comparisons, only the effect of rs2272495 on overweight/obesity remained to be significant (empirical <it>p </it>= 0.043). Moreover, we investigated the effects of these SNPs on obesity-related quantitative traits in all participants. rs2272495 was associated with BMI (<it>p </it>= 0.015), waist circumference (<it>p </it>= 0.006), hip circumference (<it>p </it>= 0.025) as well as WHR (<it>p </it>= 0.047) under a recessive model. Similar associations were found for rs1107756 except for WHR.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study suggests that genetic variations in <it>APPL2 </it>are associated with overweight and obesity in Chinese population with normal glucose tolerance.</p

    Synthesis of compact ZSM-5 zeolite membrane by adding the promoter NaCl

    The compact ZSM-5 membranes was synthesized on porous alumina substrates by pre-coating narrosized ZSM-5 seeds and then employing the twice hydrothermal synthesis with adding the promoter NaCl. Effect of Na+ concentration on the formation of membrane was investigated in this work, indicating that adding a certain mount of NaCl can boost the growth of zeolite crystals on the substrates, thus forming the compact membrane consisted of highly intergrown crystals. The separating performance of zeolite membranes indicated that using a mixture with a composition of Al2O3: 84SiO(2): 10Na(2)O: 100NaCl: 15TPABr: 3500H(2)O as synthesis gel, the ideal selectivity of H-2/C3H8 could reach a maximum value of 23.7 at room temperature and pressure difference of 0.1 MPa, and the permselectivity decreased to 9.4 at testing temperature of 200 degreesC, which is still higher than the corresponding Knudsen diffusion value (4.69), suggesting that the membrane synthesized by this method was defect-free

    A comparison of four clustering methods for brain expression microarray data

    Background DNA microarrays, which determine the expression levels of tens of thousands of genes from a sample, are an important research tool. However, the volume of data they produce can be an obstacle to interpretation of the results. Clustering the genes on the basis of similarity of their expression profiles can simplify the data, and potentially provides an important source of biological inference, but these methods have not been tested systematically on datasets from complex human tissues. In this paper, four clustering methods, CRC, k-means, ISA and memISA, are used upon three brain expression datasets. The results are compared on speed, gene coverage and GO enrichment. The effects of combining the clusters produced by each method are also assessed. Results k-means outperforms the other methods, with 100% gene coverage and GO enrichments only slightly exceeded by memISA and ISA. Those two methods produce greater GO enrichments on the datasets used, but at the cost of much lower gene coverage, fewer clusters produced, and speed. The clusters they find are largely different to those produced by k-means. Combining clusters produced by k-means and memISA or ISA leads to increased GO enrichment and number of clusters produced (compared to k-means alone), without negatively impacting gene coverage. memISA can also find potentially disease-related clusters. In two independent dorsolateral prefrontal cortex datasets, it finds three overlapping clusters that are either enriched for genes associated with schizophrenia, genes differentially expressed in schizophrenia, or both. Two of these clusters are enriched for genes of the MAP kinase pathway, suggesting a possible role for this pathway in the aetiology of schizophrenia. Conclusion Considered alone, k-means clustering is the most effective of the four methods on typical microarray brain expression datasets. However, memISA and ISA can add extra high-quality clusters to the set produced by k-means, so combining these three methods is the method of choice

    Curcumin supplementation could improve diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction associated with decreased vascular superoxide production and PKC inhibition

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Curcumin, an Asian spice and food-coloring agent, is known for its anti-oxidant properties. We propose that curcumin can improve diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction through superoxide reduction.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Diabetes (DM) was induced in rats by streptozotocin (STZ). Daily curcumin oral feeding was started six weeks after the STZ injection. Twelve weeks after STZ injection, mesenteric arteriolar responses were recorded in real time using intravital fluorescence videomicroscopy. Superoxide and vascular protein kinase C (PKC-ÎČII) were examined by hydroethidine and immunofluorescence, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The dilatory response to acetylcholine (ACh) significantly decreased in DM arterioles as compared to control arterioles. There was no difference among groups when sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was used. ACh responses were significantly improved by both low and high doses (30 and 300 mg/kg, respectively) of curcumin supplementation. An oxygen radical-sensitive fluorescent probe, hydroethidine, was used to detect intracellular superoxide anion (O<sub>2</sub><sup>●-</sup>) production. O<sub>2</sub><sup>●- </sup>production was markedly increased in DM arterioles, but it was significantly reduced by supplementation of either low or high doses of curcumin. In addition, with a high dose of curcumin, diabetes-induced vascular PKC-ÎČII expression was diminished.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Therefore, it is suggested that curcumin supplementation could improve diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction significantly in relation to its potential to decrease superoxide production and PKC inhibition.</p
