How to assess technological developments in basic research? Enabling formative interventions regarding sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues at an early stage
In an era of ever faster and more momentous technological development, both technology assessment and transdisciplinary interventions are in danger of structurally lagging behind the speed of innovation. This paper proposes a new tiered approach to technology assessment at low Technology Readiness Levels that enables a both rapid and concerted interdisciplinary science response to this Great Acceleration. Covering sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues, this approach encourages and enables the innovators themselves to conduct assessments embedded in the innovation process as early as possible. Suitable tools for early engagement that help facilitate development-integrated assessments are introduced and described. The design and use of these instruments in the field of basic research is illustrated using the Cluster of Excellence livMatS as an example.
Differential RelA- and RelB-dependent gene transcription in LTβR-stimulated mouse embryonic fibroblasts

Abstract

Background

Lymphotoxin signaling via the lymphotoxin-β receptor (LTβR) has been implicated in biological processes ranging from development of secondary lymphoid organs, maintenance of spleen architecture, host defense against pathogens, autoimmunity, and lipid homeostasis. The major transcription factor that is activated by LTβR crosslinking is NF-κB. Two signaling pathways have been described, the classical inhibitor of NF-κB α (IκBα)-regulated and the alternative p100-regulated pathway that result in the activation of p50-RelA and p52-RelB NF-κB heterodimers, respectively.

Results

Using microarray analysis, we investigated the transcriptional response downstream of the LTβR in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) and its regulation by the RelA and RelB subunits of NF-κB. We describe novel LTβR-responsive genes that were regulated by RelA and/or RelB. The majority of LTβR-regulated genes required the presence of both RelA and RelB, revealing significant crosstalk between the two NF-κB activation pathways. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis confirmed that LTβR-NF-κB target genes are predominantly involved in the regulation of immune responses. However, other biological processes, such as apoptosis/cell death, cell cycle, angiogenesis, and taxis were also regulated by LTβR signaling. Moreover, LTβR activation inhibited expression of a key adipogenic transcription factor, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (<it>pparg</it>), suggesting that LTβR signaling may interfere with adipogenic differentiation.

Conclusion

Microarray analysis of LTβR-stimulated fibroblasts provided comprehensive insight into the transcriptional response of LTβR signaling and its regulation by the NF-κB family members RelA and RelB.</p
Nonclassical Light Generation from III-V and Group-IV Solid-State Cavity Quantum Systems
In this chapter, we present the state-of-the-art in the generation of
nonclassical states of light using semiconductor cavity quantum electrodynamics
(QED) platforms. Our focus is on the photon blockade effects that enable the
generation of indistinguishable photon streams with high purity and efficiency.
Starting with the leading platform of InGaAs quantum dots in optical
nanocavities, we review the physics of a single quantum emitter strongly
coupled to a cavity. Furthermore, we propose a complete model for photon
blockade and tunneling in III-V quantum dot cavity QED systems. Turning toward
quantum emitters with small inhomogeneous broadening, we propose a direction
for novel experiments for nonclassical light generation based on group-IV
color-center systems. We present a model of a multi-emitter cavity QED
platform, which features richer dressed-states ladder structures, and show how
it can offer opportunities for studying new regimes of high-quality photon
blockade.Comment: 64 pages, 32 figures, to appear as Chapter 3 in Advances in Atomic

QUALINET white paper on definitions of Immersive Media Experience (IMEx)
With the coming of age of virtual/augmented reality and interactive media,
numerous definitions, frameworks, and models of immersion have emerged across
different fields ranging from computer graphics to literary works. Immersion is
oftentimes used interchangeably with presence as both concepts are closely
related. However, there are noticeable interdisciplinary differences regarding
definitions, scope, and constituents that are required to be addressed so that
a coherent understanding of the concepts can be achieved. Such consensus is
vital for paving the directionality of the future of immersive media
experiences (IMEx) and all related matters.
The aim of this white paper is to provide a survey of definitions of
immersion and presence which leads to a definition of immersive media
experience (IMEx). The Quality of Experience (QoE) for immersive media is
described by establishing a relationship between the concepts of QoE and IMEx
followed by application areas of immersive media experience. Influencing
factors on immersive media experience are elaborated as well as the assessment
of immersive media experience. Finally, standardization activities related to
IMEx are highlighted and the white paper is concluded with an outlook related
to future developments

The Barents and Chukchi Seas: Comparison of two Arctic shelf ecosystems
This paper compares and contrasts the ecosystems of the Barents and Chukchi Seas. Despite their similarity in a number of features, the Barents Sea supports a vast biomass of commercially important fish, but the Chukchi does not. Here we examine a number of aspects of these two seas to ascertain how they are similar and how they differ. We then indentify processes and mechanisms that may be responsible for their similarities and differences. Both the Barents and Chukchi Seas are high latitude, seasonally ice covered, Arctic shelf-seas. Both have strongly advective regimes, and receive water from the south. Water entering the Barents comes from the deep, ice-free and "warm" Norwegian Sea, and contains not only heat, but also a rich supply of zooplankton that supports larval fish in spring. In contrast, Bering Sea water entering the Chukchi in spring and early summer is cold. In spring, this Bering Sea water is depleted of large, lipid-rich zooplankton, thus likely resulting in a relatively low availability of zooplankton for fish. Although primary production on average is similar in the two seas, fish biomass density is an order of magnitude greater in the Barents than in the Chukchi Sea. The Barents Sea supports immense fisheries, whereas the Chukchi Sea does not. The density of cetaceans in the Barents Sea is about double that in the Chukchi Sea, as is the density of nesting seabirds, whereas, the density of pinnipeds in the Chukchi is about double that in the Barents Sea. In the Chukchi Sea, export of carbon to the benthos and benthic biomass may be greater. We hypothesize that the difference in fish abundance in the two seas is driven by differences in the heat and plankton advected into them, and the amount of primary production consumed in the upper water column. However, we suggest that the critical difference between the Chukchi and Barents Seas is the pre-cooled water entering the Chukchi Sea from the south. This cold water, and the winter mixing of the Chukchi Sea as it becomes ice covered, result in water temperatures below the physiological limits of the commercially valuable fish that thrive in the southeastern Bering Sea. If climate change warms the Barents Sea, thereby increasing the open water area via reducing ice cover, productivity at most trophic levels is likely to increase. In the Chukchi, warming should also reduce sea ice cover, permitting a longer production season. However, the shallow northern Bering and Chukchi Seas are expected to continue to be ice-covered in winter, so water there will continue to be cold in winter and spring, and is likely to continue to be a barrier to the movement of temperate fish into the Chukchi Sea. Thus, it is unlikely that large populations of boreal fish species will become established in this Arctic marginal sea. © 2012 Elsevier B.V
