Checking strong open congruence in χ-calculus
The χ-calculus is an important evolution for mobile process calculi. Open congruence is widely studied in χ-calculus. However, there still lacks an algorithm for checking this bisimulation relation. In this paper, the symbolic technique is applied to the research of χ-calculus and an efficient characterization for strong open congruence which does not involve quantification over substitutions is given. Based on it, an algorithm, which instantiates bound names 'on-the-fly', is developed to check strong open congruence for finite control processes
Numerical simulation of thermal and residual stress fields induced by lined pipe welding
This paper investigates numerical thermal fields and residual stresses induced by single-pass
weld overlay (lap-weld) and girth welding (butt-weld) in lined pipe using Tungsten Inert Gas
(TIG) welding. A distributed power density of the moving heat source based on Goldak’s
ellipsoid heat flux distribution is used in a Finite Element (FE) simulation of the lined pipe
welding process. In addition, radiation and convection have been incorporated in heat transfer
coefficient user-subroutines for the FE code ABAQUS. The 3-D FE model approach has been
validated using previous experimental results published for butt-welds of similar sections of
carbon-manganese C-Mn steel pipe lined with stainless steel. The FE model has been
developed to determine the thermal isotherms and residual stress distributions from weld
overlay and girth welding. The use of an inner layer known as a liner has a considerable
influence on the thermal history and residual stress distributions. Furthermore, the influence
of the weld overlay has been examined thermally and mechanically as it is a key factor that
can affect the quality of lined pipe welding
A population of luminous accreting black holes with hidden mergers
Major galaxy mergers are thought to play an important part in fuelling the
growth of supermassive black holes. However, observational support for this
hypothesis is mixed, with some studies showing a correlation between merging
galaxies and luminous quasars and others showing no such association. Recent
observations have shown that a black hole is likely to become heavily obscured
behind merger-driven gas and dust, even in the early stages of the merger, when
the galaxies are well separated (5 to 40 kiloparsecs). Merger simulations
further suggest that such obscuration and black-hole accretion peaks in the
final merger stage, when the two galactic nuclei are closely separated (less
than 3 kiloparsecs). Resolving this final stage requires a combination of
high-spatial-resolution infrared imaging and high-sensitivity hard-X-ray
observations to detect highly obscured sources. However, large numbers of
obscured luminous accreting supermassive black holes have been recently
detected nearby (distances below 250 megaparsecs) in X-ray observations. Here
we report high-resolution infrared observations of hard-X-ray-selected black
holes and the discovery of obscured nuclear mergers, the parent populations of
supermassive-black-hole mergers. We find that obscured luminous black holes
(bolometric luminosity higher than 2x10^44 ergs per second) show a significant
(P<0.001) excess of late-stage nuclear mergers (17.6 per cent) compared to a
sample of inactive galaxies with matching stellar masses and star formation
rates (1.1 per cent), in agreement with theoretical predictions. Using
hydrodynamic simulations, we confirm that the excess of nuclear mergers is
indeed strongest for gas-rich major-merger hosts of obscured luminous black
holes in this final stage.Comment: To appear in the 8 November 2018 issue of Nature. This is the

Topological Photonics
Topology is revolutionizing photonics, bringing with it new theoretical
discoveries and a wealth of potential applications. This field was inspired by
the discovery of topological insulators, in which interfacial electrons
transport without dissipation even in the presence of impurities. Similarly,
new optical mirrors of different wave-vector space topologies have been
constructed to support new states of light propagating at their interfaces.
These novel waveguides allow light to flow around large imperfections without
back-reflection. The present review explains the underlying principles and
highlights the major findings in photonic crystals, coupled resonators,
metamaterials and quasicrystals.Comment: progress and review of an emerging field, 12 pages, 6 figures and 1

On the link between ocean biota emissions, aerosol, and maritime clouds: Airborne, ground, and satellite measurements off the coast of California
Surface, airborne, and satellite measurements over the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of California during the period between 2005 and 2007 are used to explore the relationship between ocean chlorophyll a, aerosol, and marine clouds. Periods of enhanced chlorophyll a and wind speed are coincident with increases in particulate diethylamine and methanesulfonate concentrations. The measurements indicate that amines are a source of secondary organic aerosol in the marine atmosphere. Subsaturated aerosol hygroscopic growth measurements indicate that the organic component during periods of high chlorophyll a and wind speed exhibit considerable water uptake ability. Increased average cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) activity during periods of increased chlorophyll a levels likely results from both size distribution and aerosol composition changes. The available data over the period of measurements indicate that the cloud microphysical response, as represented by either cloud droplet number concentration or cloud droplet effective radius, is likely influenced by a combination of atmospheric dynamics and aerosol perturbations during periods of high chlorophyll a concentrations
Macroscale evolutionary patterns of flight muscle dimorphism in the carrion beetle Necrophila japonica
Some insect species exhibit polymorphisms in flight muscles or wings, which provide opportunities for studying the factors that drive dispersal polymorphisms and the evolution of flightlessness in insects. We investigated the macroscale evolutionary pattern of flightlessness in the widespread Japanese beetle Necrophila japonica (Coleoptera: Silphidae), which exhibits flight muscle dimorphisms using phylogeographic approaches. N. japonica lives in both stable and unstable habitats, and the flight muscle dimorphisms may have been maintained through the use of these diverse habitats. We studied the distribution pattern of the proportion of individuals lacking flight muscles in relation to the genetic differentiation among geographic populations using an 842-base pair sequence of the COI-II gene. Both flight-capable and flightless individuals occurred over the distribution area, and the flight muscle condition showed no significant phylogeographic pattern. Several populations comprised flight-capable individuals only, whereas few comprised flightless ones only. Demographic expansion was suggested for major clades of COI-II haplotypes, and the genetic differentiation showed an isolation-by-distance pattern among the populations in Japan. The proportion of flightless individuals was higher in a population with a higher annual mean temperature and with higher genetic diversity among individuals. These results indicate that geographic expansion occurred recently while flight muscle dimorphisms have been maintained, that flight-capable individuals have colonized cooler (peripheral) habitats, and that flightlessness has increased in long-persisting populations as suggested by high genetic diversity
Rotational knee laxity: Reliability of a simple measurement device in vivo

Abstract

Background

Double bundle ACL reconstruction has been demonstrated to decrease rotational knee laxity. However, there is no simple, commercially-available device to measure knee rotation. The investigators developed a simple, non-invasive device to measure knee rotation. In conjunction with a rigid boot to rotate the tibia and a force/moment sensor to allow precise determination of torque about the knee, a magnetic tracking system measures the axial rotation of the tibia with respect to the femur. This device has been shown to have acceptable levels of test re-test reliability to measure knee rotation in cadaveric knees.

Methods

The objective of this study was to determine reliability of the device in measuring knee rotation of human subjects. Specifically, the intra-tester reliability within a single testing session, test-retest reliability between two testing sessions, and inter-tester reliability were assessed for 11 male subjects with normal knees.

Results

The 95% confidence interval for rotation was less than 5° for intra-tester, test-retest, and inter-tester reliability, and the standard error of measurement for the differences between left and right knees was found to be less than 3°.

Conclusion

It was found that the knee rotation measurements obtained with this device have acceptable limits of reliability for clinical use and interpretation.</p
Comparative genomics reveals that loss of lunatic fringe (LFNG) promotes melanoma metastasis
Metastasis is the leading cause of death of patients with advanced melanoma, yet the somatic alterations that aid tumour cell dissemination and colonization are poorly understood. Here we deploy comparative genomics to identify and validate clinically relevant drivers of melanoma metastasis. To do this we identified a set of 976 genes whose expression level was associated with a poor outcome in patients from two large melanoma cohorts. We next characterised the genomes and transcriptomes of mouse melanoma cell lines defined as weakly metastatic and their highly metastatic derivatives. By comparing expression data between species we identified Lunatic Fringe (LFNG), amongst 28 genes whose expression level is predictive of poor prognosis, and whose altered expression is associated with a pro-metastatic phenotype in mouse melanoma cells. CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knockout of Lfng dramatically enhanced the capability of weakly metastatic melanoma cells to metastasize in vivo, a phenotype that could be rescued with the Lfng cDNA. Notably, genomic alterations disrupting LFNG are found exclusively in human metastatic melanomas sequenced as part of The Cancer Genome Atlas. Using comparative genomics we show that LFNG expression plays a functional role in regulating melanoma metastasis
Measurement of Z/gamma*+jet+X angular distributions in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross
sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and
|y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an
excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross
section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are
crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event
generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these
measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the
experimental sensitivity to rare signals.Comment: Published in Physics Letters B 682 (2010), pp. 370-380. 15 pages, 6

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically
decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states:
tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These
final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs
boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The
observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at
the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of
115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
