    Preparation of New Polyols Based on Cis-1,4-Polyisoprene by Using 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition

    This research focuses on synthesis and modification of polyol precursors derived from cis-1,4-polyisoprene (PI). These new polyol precursors can be converted to high value-added polyurethane (PU). The epoxidized hydroxytelechelic PI (EHTPI) prepared by chemical modification from PI was used as starting material for polyol synthesis. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition between a terminal alkyne and an azide has rapidly become the most popular click reaction. We applied this reaction to couple azide-functionalized PI and alkyne-functionalized sugar for preparing polyols. For azide functionalization, 1-methyl epoxidized cyclohexane was used as a model molecule, and various conditions for epoxide ring opening of 1-methyl epoxidized cyclohexane and EHTPI were investigated. The cycloaddition of alkyne and azide was carried out in the presence of sodium ascorbate and copper sulfate. The polyol precursors obtained might be used to prepare biodegradable polyol PU

    MIMO antenna concept for 4G electronic eyewear devices

    MIMO antenna concepts for electronic eyewear devices operating in 4G cellular standard are proposed in this paper. Coupling element type antennas and matching circuits are used to obtain a high bandwidth potential for the coverage of the 700-960MHz and 1.7-2.7GHz frequency bands. To obtain a dual-antenna MIMO configuration, two CE type antennas are placed on the two sides of the head, resulting in a very high isolation level thanks to the lossy nature of the human tissues (head). It is shown through simulated 3D radiation patterns that very low envelope correlation coefficients are obtained for this placement. Preliminary SAR simulations show values above the 1g standards

    Ball grid array-module with integrated shaped lens for WiGig applications in eyewear devices

    A ball grid array-module (BGA-module) incorporating a low-cost shaped dielectric lens is proposed for wireless communications in the 60-GHz WiGig band between a smart eye-wear, where it is integrated and facing a laptop or TV. The module, which is codesigned with a 60-GHz transceiver, consists of two separate identical antennas for transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx). The in-plane separation of these elements is 6.9 mm both being offset from the lens focus. This poses a challenge to the lens design to ensure coincident beam pointing directions for Rx and Tx. The shaped lens is further required to narrow the angular coverage in the elevation plane and broaden it in the horizontal plane. A 3-D-printed eyewear frame with an integrated lens and a recess for proper BGA-module integration is fabricated in ABS-plastic material. Measurements show a reflection coefficient below -12 dB in the 57-66 GHz band. A maximum gain of 11 dBi is obtained at 60 GHz, with 24 degrees and 96 degrees beamwidth at 5-dBi gain, respectively, in the vertical and horizontal planes. The radiation exposure is evaluated for a homogeneous SAM head phantom and a heterogeneous visible human head. The simulated power density values for both models are found to be lower than the existing standards

    Antifouling activity of novel polyisoprene-based coatings made from photocurable natural rubber derived oligomers

    Natural rubber is a renewable resource with a potential as precursor of a very wide range of novel polymers, including polyisoprene-based surfaces with antifouling (AF) activity. In this work, new ionic and non-ionic coatings were prepared by the photocrosslinking reaction of photosensitive cis-1,4- oligoisoprenes, bearing a variable number of ammonium groups. The photochemical crosslinking was achieved using radical (via acrylate groups) or cationic (via epoxy groups) processes. Surface properties of these coatings were studied by static contact angle measurements and AFM imaging. Assessment of bioactivity demonstrated that most of the resulting coatings showed AF potential against fouling organisms: growth inhibition of marine bacteria (Pseudoalteromonas elyakovii, Shewanella putrefaciens, Cobetia marina, Polaribacter irgensii, Vibrio aestuarianus) and fungi (Halosphaeriopsis mediosetigera, Asteromyces cruciatus, Lulworthia uniseptata, Zalerion sp., Monodictys pelagica); decreased adhesion of microalgae (Navicula jeffreyi, Cylindrotheca closterium, Chlorarachnion globosum, Pleurochrysis roscoffensis, Exanthemachrysis gayraliae, Amphora coffeaeformis); inhibition of attachment and/or germination of spores of Ulva intestinalis. The best AF activity was obtained with the ionic surfaces. These new coatings prepared from precursors obtained from natural rubber are in essence active by contact. As the biocidal functions are fixed covalently to the polymer chain, detectable release of biocidal products in the marine ecosystem is prevented so that a valuable environment-friendly alternative for new AF coatings is hereby proposed

    Plasmodesmata (PD) pores connect neighbouring plant cells and enable direct transport across the cell wall. Understanding the molecular composition of these structures is essential to address their formation and later dynamic regulation. Here we provide a biochemical characterisation of the cell wall co-purified with primary PD of Arabidopsis thaliana cell cultures. To achieve this result we combined subcellular fractionation, polysaccharide analyses and enzymatic fingerprinting approaches. Relative to the rest of the cell wall, specific patterns were observed in the PD fraction. Most xyloglucans, although possibly not abundant as a group, were fucosylated. Homogalacturonans displayed short methylated stretches while rhamnogalacturonan I species were remarkably abundant. Ful l rhamnogalacturonan II forms, highly methyl-acetylated, were also present. We additionally showed that these domains, compared to the broad wall, are less affected by wall modifying activities during a time interval of days.     Impacts of added oenological tannins on red wine quality to counteract Botrytis infection in Merlot grapes

    The contamination of grape berries by Botrytis cinerea can drastically damage wine quality, in particular causing colour degradation. In musts obtained from botrytised grapes, SO2 addition is the main means of avoiding oxidation damage due to laccases excreted by the pathogen. However, consumers are becoming increasingly reluctant to accept SO2 addition to wine. Oenological tannins are used for fining wines because of their colloidal properties, and for wine colour stabilisation due to their ability to condense with anthocyanins. They are also known for their antioxidant and antioxidasic properties. They were thus investigated in the present study for their potential as an alternative to SO2 against laccase oxidation. The impact of various types of oenological tannins on musts and wines was studied once added to musts obtained from the Merlot cultivar, comprising 20 % and 50 % botrytised grapes. Laccase activity, antioxidant capacity, composition of phenolic compounds, spectrophotometric and CIELAB colour parameters were assessed in the musts and wines. Sensory analyses were also performed on 3-month-old wines to evaluate the visual, olfactory and gustative consequences of tannin addition. At a 50 % botrytisation rate, the addition of any type of oenological tannins (at a concentration of 100 g/hL) had no effect on laccase activity and did not protect phenolic compounds. However, at the same concentration and at a 20 % botrytisation rate, proanthocyanidin tannins from grape skin were found to be the most promising tannins with simultaneous protective effects, such as an inhibitory effect on laccase enzymes, protection of colour from complete degradation and preservation of some procyanidin compounds. Oenological tannins are promising candidates for protecting wines from Botrytis damage and they induce a differential effect according to their origin and structure. They could be used to reduce the amount of SO2 that is added during vatting. More research is needed to confirm and better understand the mode of action of various tannins at levels lower than the 20 % botrytised rate tested in the present study

    Biological responses to climate change have been widely documented across taxa and regions, but it remains unclear whether species are maintaining a good match between phenotype and environment, i.e. whether observed trait changes are adaptive. Here we reviewed 10,090 abstracts and extracted data from 71 studies reported in 58 relevant publications, to assess quantitatively whether phenotypic trait changes associated with climate change are adaptive in animals. A meta-analysis focussing on birds, the taxon best represented in our dataset, suggests that global warming has not systematically affected morphological traits, but has advanced phenological traits. We demonstrate that these advances are adaptive for some species, but imperfect as evidenced by the observed consistent selection for earlier timing. Application of a theoretical model indicates that the evolutionary load imposed by incomplete adaptive responses to ongoing climate change may already be threatening the persistence of species
