On the propagation speed of evanescent modes
The group-velocity of evanescent waves (in undersized waveguides, for
instance) was theoretically predicted, and has been experimentally verified, to
be Superluminal (v_g > c). By contrast, it is known that the precursor speed in
vacuum cannot be larger than c. In this paper, by computer simulations based on
Maxwell equations only, we show the existence of both phenomena. In other
words, we verify the actual possibility of Superluminal group velocities,
without violating the so-called (naive) Einstein causality. (Subject classes:

Some results on thermal stress of layered plates and shells by using Unified Formulation
This work presents some results on two-dimensional modelling of thermal stress problems in multilayered structures. The governing equations are written by referring to the Unified Formulation (UF) introduced by the first author. These equations are obtained in a compact form, that doesn't depend on the order of expansion of variables in the thickness direction or the variable description (layer-wise models and equivalent single layers models). Classical and refined theories based on the Principle of Virtual Displacements (PVD) and advanced mixed theories based on the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT) are both considered. As a result, a large variety of theories are derived and compared. The temperature profile along the thickness of the plate/shell is calculated by solving the Fourier's heat conduction equation. Alternatively, thermo-mechanical coupling problems can be considered, in which the thermal variation is influenced by mechanical loading. Exact closed-form solutions are provided for plates and shells, but also the applications of the Ritz method and the Finite Element Method (FEM) are presented
Finsler geodesics in the presence of a convex function and their applications
We obtain a result about the existence of only a finite number of geodesics
between two fixed non-conjugate points in a Finsler manifold endowed with a
convex function. We apply it to Randers and Zermelo metrics. As a by-product,
we also get a result about the finiteness of the number of lightlike and
timelike geodesics connecting an event to a line in a standard stationary
spacetime.Comment: 16 pages, AMSLaTex. v2 is a minor revision: title changed, references

First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell {\Lambda}-Hypernuclei
Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of
eight Lambda-Hypernuclei (A = 5-16) have been revisited. New values of the
ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths,
Gamma_2N/Gamma_p, are obtained from single proton spectra, Gamma_2N/Gamma_p =
0.50 +/- 0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra,
Gamma_2N/Gamma_p = 0.36 +/- 0.14stat +0.05sys -0.04sys , in full agreement with
previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract
the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Lambda decay width,
Gamma_p/Gamma_Lambda, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by
exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence
on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic
determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical
calculations.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
Superluminal Localized Solutions to Maxwell Equations propagating along a waveguide: The finite-energy case
In a previous paper of ours [Phys. Rev. E64 (2001) 066603, e-print
physics/0001039] we have shown localized (non-evanescent) solutions to Maxwell
equations to exist, which propagate without distortion with Superluminal speed
along normal-sized waveguides, and consist in trains of "X-shaped" beams. Those
solutions possessed therefore infinite energy. In this note we show how to
obtain, by contrast, finite-energy solutions, with the same localization and
Superluminality properties. [PACS nos.: 41.20.Jb; 03.50.De; 03.30.+p; 84.40.Az;

Kinematics and hydrodynamics of spinning particles
In the first part (Sections 1 and 2) of this paper --starting from the Pauli
current, in the ordinary tensorial language-- we obtain the decomposition of
the non-relativistic field velocity into two orthogonal parts: (i) the
"classical part, that is, the 3-velocity w = p/m OF the center-of-mass (CM),
and (ii) the so-called "quantum" part, that is, the 3-velocity V of the motion
IN the CM frame (namely, the internal "spin motion" or zitterbewegung). By
inserting such a complete, composite expression of the velocity into the
kinetic energy term of the non-relativistic classical (i.e., newtonian)
lagrangian, we straightforwardly get the appearance of the so-called "quantum
potential" associated, as it is known, with the Madelung fluid. This result
carries further evidence that the quantum behaviour of micro-systems can be
adirect consequence of the fundamental existence of spin. In the second part
(Sections 3 and 4), we fix our attention on the total 3-velocity v = w + V, it
being now necessary to pass to relativistic (classical) physics; and we show
that the proper time entering the definition of the four-velocity v^mu for
spinning particles has to be the proper time tau of the CM frame. Inserting the
correct Lorentz factor into the definition of v^mu leads to completely new
kinematical properties for v_mu v^mu. The important constraint p_mu v^mu = m,
identically true for scalar particles, but just assumed a priori in all
previous spinning particle theories, is herein derived in a self-consistent
way.Comment: LaTeX file; needs kapproc.st
Performance of CUF approach to analyze the structural behavior of slender bodies
This paper deals with the accurate evaluation of complete three-dimensional (3D) stress fields in beam structures with compact and bridge-like sections. A refined beam finite-element (FE) formulation is employed, which permits any-order expansions for the three displacement components over the section domain by means of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). Classical (Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko) beam theories are considered as particular cases. Comparisons with 3D solid FE analyses are provided. End effects caused by the boundary conditions are investigated. Bending and torsional loadings are considered. The proposed formulation has shown its capability of leading to quasi-3D stress fields over the beam domain. Higher-order beam theories are necessary for the case of bridge-like sections. Various theories are also compared in terms of shear correction factors on the basis of definitions found in the open literature. It has been confirmed that different theories could lead to very different values of shear correction factors, the accuracy of which is subordinate to a great extent to the section geometries and loading conditions. However, an accurate evaluation of shear correction factors is obtained by means of the present higher-order theories
Abelian and nonabelian vector field effective actions from string field theory
The leading terms in the tree-level effective action for the massless fields
of the bosonic open string are calculated by integrating out all massive fields
in Witten's cubic string field theory. In both the abelian and nonabelian
theories, field redefinitions make it possible to express the effective action
in terms of the conventional field strength. The resulting actions reproduce
the leading terms in the abelian and nonabelian Born-Infeld theories, and
include (covariant) derivative corrections.Comment: 49 pages, 1 eps figur
Charge separation relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Measurements of charge dependent azimuthal correlations with the ALICE
detector at the LHC are reported for Pb-Pb collisions at TeV. Two- and three-particle charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in
the pseudo-rapidity range are presented as a function of the
collision centrality, particle separation in pseudo-rapidity, and transverse
momentum. A clear signal compatible with a charge-dependent separation relative
to the reaction plane is observed, which shows little or no collision energy
dependence when compared to measurements at RHIC energies. This provides a new
insight for understanding the nature of the charge dependent azimuthal
correlations observed at RHIC and LHC energies.Comment: 12 pages, 3 captioned figures, authors from page 2 to 6, published

A note on comonotonicity and positivity of the control components of decoupled quadratic FBSDE
In this small note we are concerned with the solution of Forward-Backward
Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) with drivers that grow quadratically
in the control component (quadratic growth FBSDE or qgFBSDE). The main theorem
is a comparison result that allows comparing componentwise the signs of the
control processes of two different qgFBSDE. As a byproduct one obtains
conditions that allow establishing the positivity of the control process.Comment: accepted for publicatio
