    Temperature-Dependent Anomalies in the Structure of the (001) Surface of LiCu2O2

    Surface corrugation functions, derived from elastic helium atom scattering (HAS) diffraction patterns at different temperatures, reveal that the Cu2+ rows in the (001) surface of LiCu2O2 undergo an outward displacement of about 0.15 {\AA} as the surface was cooled down to 140 K. This is probably the first time that isolated one-dimensional magnetic ion arrays were realized, which qualifies the Li1+Cu2+O2-2 surface as a candidate to study one-dimensional magnetism. The rising Cu2+ rows induce a surface incommensurate structural transition along the a-direction. Surface equilibrium analysis showed that the surface Cu2+ ions at bulk-like positions experience a net outward force along the surface normal which is relieved by the displacement. Temperature-dependent changes of the surface phonon dispersions obtained with the aid of inelastic HAS measurements combined with surface lattice dynamical calculations are also reported.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    S. <i>mansoni</i> Schistosomula Antigens Induce Th1/Proinflammatory Cytokine Responses

    Larvae of Schistosoma (schistosomula) are highly susceptible to host immune responses and are attractive prophylactic vaccine targets, although cellular immune responses against schistosomula antigens in endemic human populations are not well characterized. We collected blood and stool from 54 Schistosoma mansoni-infected Ugandans, isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells and stimulated them for 24 hours with schistosome adult worm and soluble egg antigens (AWA and SEA), along with schistosomula recombinant proteins rSmKK7, Lymphocyte Antigen 6 isoforms (rSmLy6A and rSmLy6B), tetraspanin isoforms (rSmTSP6 and rSmTSP7). Cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were measured in the culture supernatants using a multiplex luminex assay, and infection intensity was determined before and at 1 year after praziquantel (PZQ) treatment using the Kato-Katz method. Cellular responses were grouped and the relationship between groups of correlated cellular responses and infection intensity before and after PZQ treatment was investigated. AWA and SEA induced mainly Th2 responses. In contrast, rSmLy6B, rSmTSP6 and rSmTSP7 induced Th1/pro-inflammatory responses. While recombinant antigens rSmKK7 and rSmLy6A did not induce a Th1/pro-inflammatory response, they had an association with pre-treatment infection intensity after adjusting for age and sex. Testing more schistosomula antigens using this approach could provide immune-epidemiology identifiers necessary for prioritizing next generation schistosomiasis vaccine candidates

    Determination of Specific Electrocatalytic Sites in the Oxidation of Small Molecules on Crystalline Metal Surfaces

    The identification of active sites in electrocatalytic reactions is part of the elucidation of mechanisms of catalyzed reactions on solid surfaces. However, this is not an easy task, even for apparently simple reactions, as we sometimes think the oxidation of adsorbed CO is. For surfaces consisting of non-equivalent sites, the recognition of specific active sites must consider the influence that facets, as is the steps/defect on the surface of the catalyst, cause in its neighbors; one has to consider the electrochemical environment under which the “active sites” lie on the surface, meaning that defects/steps on the surface do not partake in chemistry by themselves. In this paper, we outline the recent efforts in understanding the close relationships between site-specific and the overall rate and/or selectivity of electrocatalytic reactions. We analyze hydrogen adsorption/desorption, and electro-oxidation of CO, methanol, and ammonia. The classical topic of asymmetric electrocatalysis on kinked surfaces is also addressed for glucose electro-oxidation.     Intravascular ADP and soluble nucleotidases contribute to acute prothrombotic state during vigorous exercise in humans

Here, we tested the hypothesis that nucleotide turnover is activated in the bloodstream of exercising humans thus contributing to the enhanced platelet reactivity and haemostasis. Right atrial, arterial and venous blood samples were collected from endurance-trained athletes at rest, during submaximal and maximal cycle ergometer exercise, and after early recovery. ATP-specific bioluminescent assay, together with high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis, revealed that plasma ATP and ADP concentrations increased up to 2.5-fold during maximal exercise. Subsequent flow cytometric analysis showed that plasma from exercising subjects significantly up-regulated the surface expression of P-selectin in human platelets and these prothrombotic effects were diminished after scavenging plasma nucleotides with exogenous apyrase. Next, using thin layer chromatographic assays with [gamma-P-32]ATP and H-3/C-14-labelled nucleotides, we showed that two soluble nucleotide-inactivating enzymes, nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase and nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase, constitutively circulate in human bloodstream. Strikingly, serum nucleotide pyrophosphatase and hydrolase activities rose during maximal exercise by 20-25 and 80-100%, respectively, and then declined after 30 min recovery. Likewise, soluble nucleotidases were transiently up-regulated in the venous blood of sedentary subjects during exhaustive exercise. Human serum also contains 5'-nucleotidase, adenylate kinase and nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) kinase; however, these activities remain unchanged during exercise. In conclusion, intravascular ADP significantly augments platelet activity during strenuous exercise and these prothrombotic responses are counteracted by concurrent release of soluble nucleotide-inactivating enzymes. These findings provide a novel insight into the mechanisms underlying the enhanced risk of occlusive thrombus formation under exercising conditions

    Aluminium foil as an alternative substrate for the spectroscopic interrogation of endometrial cancer

    Biospectroscopy has the potential to investigate and characterise biological samples and could, therefore, be utilised to diagnose various diseases in a clinical environment. An important consideration in spectrochemical studies is the cost-effectiveness of the substrate used to support the sample, as high expense would limit their translation into clinic. In this paper, the performance of low-cost aluminium (Al) foil substrates was compared with the commonly used low-emissivity (low-E) slides. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was used to analyse blood plasma and serum samples from women with endometrial cancer and healthy controls. The two populations were differentiated using principal component analysis with support vector machines (PCA-SVM) with 100% sensitivity in plasma samples (endometrial cancer=70; healthy controls=15) using both Al foil and low-E slides as substrates. The same sensitivity results (100%) were achieved for serum samples (endometrial cancer=60; healthy controls=15). Specificity was found higher using Al foil (90%) in comparison to low-E slides (85%) and lower using Al foil (70%) in comparison to low-E slides in serum samples. The establishment of Al foil as low-cost and highly-performing substrate would pave the way for large-scale, multi-centre studies and potentially for routine clinical use

    Tablet use in schools: A critical review of the evidence for learning outcomes

    The increased popularity of tablets in general has led to uptake in education. We critically review the literature reporting use of tablets by primary and secondary school children across the curriculum, with a particular emphasis on learning outcomes. The Systematic Review methodology was used and our literature search resulted in 33 relevant studies meeting the inclusion criteria. A total of 23 met the minimum quality criteria and were examined in detail (16 reporting positive learning outcomes, 5 no difference and 2 negative learning outcomes). Explanations underlying these observations were analysed, and factors contributing to successful uses of tablets are discussed. While we hypothesise how tablets can viably support children in completing a variety of learning tasks (across a range of contexts and academic subjects), the fragmented nature of the current knowledge base, and the scarcity of rigorous studies, make it difficult to draw firm conclusions. The generalisability of evidence is limited and detailed explanations as to how, or why, using tablets within certain activities can improve learning remain elusive. We recommend that future research moves beyond exploration towards systematic and in-depth investigations building on the existing findings documented here.We gratefully acknowledge a donation from ARM Holdings Ltd. that partially supported this literature review.This is the author accepted manuscript.     Non invasive ventilation after extubation in paediatric patients: a preliminary study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) may be useful after extubation in children. Our objective was to determine postextubation NIV characteristics and to identify risk factors of postextubation NIV failure.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective observational study was conducted in an 8-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Following PICU protocol, NIV was applied to patients who had been mechanically ventilated for over 12 hours considered at high-risk of extubation failure -elective NIV (eNIV), immediately after extubation- or those who developed respiratory failure within 48 hours after extubation -rescue NIV (rNIV)-. Patients were categorized in subgroups according to their main underlying conditions. NIV was deemed successful when reintubation was avoided. Logistic regression analysis was performed in order to identify predictors of NIV failure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 41 episodes (rNIV in 20 episodes). Success rate was 50% in rNIV and 81% in eNIV (p = 0.037). We found significant differences in univariate analysis between success and failure groups in respiratory rate (RR) decrease at 6 hours, FiO<sub>2 </sub>at 1 hour and PO<sub>2</sub>/FiO<sub>2 </sub>ratio at 6 hours. Neurologic condition was found to be associated with NIV failure. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified no variable as independent NIV outcome predictor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data suggest that postextubation NIV seems to be useful in avoiding reintubation in high-risk children when applied immediately after extubation. NIV was more likely to fail when ARF has already developed (rNIV), when RR at 6 hours did not decrease and if oxygen requirements increased. Neurologic patients seem to be at higher risk of reintubation despite NIV use.</p
