    Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Long term studies on the impact of thionic bacteria on the global pollution of waters with toxic ions

    The biogeochemical activity of microorganisms from sulphide biogeocoenosis in the zones of sulphide copper ores deposits in East Serbia has been Studied by us since 1975. All deposits of copper mineralization were dominantly sulphides and arsenic sulphides with the constant presence of pyrite. The obtained results proved that the biochemical and chemical activity of thionic bacteria have an influence on the global pollution of waters. All the waters were characterized by a low pH value and by high Eh values, mineralization (over 7 gL(-1)) and in total iron (even more than 4 gL(-1)) dominantly as Fe3+ ions. These waters were characterized by toxic concentrations of copper ions, within the limits from about 2 to almost 200 mgL(-1) and arsenic, up to more than 4 mgL(-1). These waters partly arrive in an aquifer and the major part flows into surface water courses gravitating towards the Danube River, which empties into the Black Sea. In a hypothetical case, if maximum concentrations of copper and arsenic and maximum capacity of the springs are considered, under the assumption that the pollutants do not precipitate on the way to the main recipient, the striking information is obtained that the Danube River receives about 31 t of copper and more than 0.6 t of arsenic per annum from one place alone, which undoubtedly points to the contribution of thionic bacteria as "biological agents" to global pollution of surface and ground waters.BIOHYDROMETALLURGY: A MEETING POINT BETWEEN MICROBIAL ECOLOGY, METAL RECOVERY PROCESSES AND ENVIRON

    The inflow of mine water to mining operations is often caused by random events such as precipitation. Consequently, the mine water inflow regime can be defined as a function of random events applying the theory of random processes. Regression models of the multiple linear correlation type have been used to simulate the inflow of mine water into mining operations, produce short-range predictions and facilitate rapid response inside the mine. The significance of such models lies in the ability to simulate and predict the consequences (mine water inflow), caused by events of a random nature (meteorological parameters: precipitation and air temperature). The presented prognostic models have been calibrated for mine water inflow to the Štavalj Coal Mine in southwestern Serbia. Mathematical dependencies were defined based on daily mine water inflow rates recorded during the period from 2003 to 2011, which can be used to generate short-range (1-7 day) predictions of mean daily mine water inflow rates to the Štavalj Coal Mine. A strong correlation (coefficient of correlation r = 0.93, Sig. = 0.00) was derived for the one-day forecast. The coefficients of correlation for predictions of mean daily mine water inflow rates related to time periods of two, three...seven days gradually declined to 0.63 (7-day mean daily inflow rate).Przedostawanie się wody do wyrobisk górniczych spowodowane jest czynnikami losowymi, na przykład opadami. Dlatego też dopływ wód kopalniach zdefiniować można jako funkcję czynników losowych, z zastosowaniem teorii procesów losowych. Symulacje dopływu wód kopalniach do wyrobiska prowadzono z wykorzystaniem modelu regresji typu wielokrotnych korelacji liniowych, na tej podstawie opracowano prognozy krótkoterminowe, tym samym umożliwiając podjecie szybkich działań w kopalni. Znaczenie modeli takich polega na ich przydatności do symulacji i przewidywania skutków dopływu wód kopalnianych, spowodowanego czynnikami losowymi (parametry meteorologiczne: opady i temperatura powietrza). Zaproponowany model skalibrowany został na przykładzie badanego dopływu wód kopalnianych do kopalni Stavalj w południowo-zachodniej Serbii. Matematyczne zależności zdefiniowano w oparciu o dobowe natężenia przepływu wód kopalniach zarejestrowane w okresie od 2003 do 2011 roku, które wykorzystać można do opracowania krótkoterminowych prognoz (obejmujących 1-7 dni) średniego natężenia przepływu wody do kopalni węgla Stavalj. Stwierdzono wysoki poziom korelacji dla prognozy jednodniowej (współczynnik korelacji r = 0.93). Wartości współczynnika korelacji otrzymywane dla kolejnych dni stopniowo malały, do 0.63 dla prognozy siedmiodniowej

    The risk model of developing schizophrenia based on temperament and character

Introduction: Cloninger's psychological model of temperament and character confirms that the personality development is influenced by biological and psychological processes. The aim of this study is to examine personality dimensions and to determine which variable separates the healthy from the ill in the best way and could be a possible psychological marker for the presence of the illness. Methods: This research included 152 subjects, 76 patients with schizophrenia and 76 healthy controls, selected on the basis of medical interviews, random population sampling model from a wider social community using the independent T-Tests. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), which compared personality traits of the patients with schizophrenia and the healthy ontrol group, was used. Dependence of variables in these categories was assessed using the Chi-square and Fisher's tests, and the impact of variables on schizophrenia was tested using univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression. The same method w as used for making the mathematical model. Results: Unlike the control group, patients with schizophrenia exhibited higher Harm avoidance (HA) and Self, transcendence (ST) scores as well as lower Self, directedness (SD) and Cooperativeness (C) scores. Multivariate binary logistic regression showed that Responsibility, Purposefulness, Resourcefulness, Cooperativeness and Compassion dimensions were significantly more present in the patients with schizophrenia. The new variable Model (area=0.896, p<0.0005) is composed of five TCI parameters. It proved to be a reliable marker for separation the healthy from the ill ones (area=0.896, p<0.0005). It has a good sensitivity (80%) and specificity (84%). Conclusions: Research has emphasized variables in the temperament and character inventory, which are the best markers for distinguishing between the healthy and the ill, thus making the mathematical model

    A Framework to Conduct and Report on Empirical User Studies in Semantic Web Contexts

    Semantic Web technologies are being applied to increasingly diverse areas where user involvement is crucial. While a number of user interfaces for Semantic Web systems have become available in the past years, their evaluation and reporting often still suffer from weaknesses. Empirical evaluations are essential to compare different approaches, demonstrate their benefits and reveal their drawbacks, and thus to facilitate further adoption of Semantic Web technologies. In this paper, we review empirical user studies of user interfaces, visualizations and interaction techniques recently published at relevant Semantic Web venues, assessing both the user studies themselves and their reporting. We then chart the design space of available methods for user studies in Semantic Web contexts. Finally, we propose a framework for their comprehensive reporting, taking into consideration user expertise, experimental setup, task design, experimental procedures and results analysis
