    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Extragalactic Sources at 148 GHz in the 2008 Survey

    We report on extragalactic sources detected in a 455 square-degree map of the southern sky made with data at a frequency of 148 GHz from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope 2008 observing season. We provide a catalog of 157 sources with flux densities spanning two orders of magnitude: from 15 to 1500 mJy. Comparison to other catalogs shows that 98% of the ACT detections correspond to sources detected at lower radio frequencies. Three of the sources appear to be associated with the brightest cluster galaxies of low redshift X-ray selected galaxy clusters. Estimates of the radio to mm-wave spectral indices and differential counts of the sources further bolster the hypothesis that they are nearly all radio sources, and that their emission is not dominated by re-emission from warm dust. In a bright (>50 mJy) 148 GHz-selected sample with complete cross-identifications from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey, we observe an average steepening of the spectra between 5, 20, and 148 GHz with median spectral indices of α520=0.07±0.06\alpha_{\rm 5-20} = -0.07 \pm 0.06, α20148=0.39±0.04\alpha_{\rm 20-148} = -0.39 \pm0.04, and α5148=0.20±0.03\alpha_{\rm 5-148} = -0.20 \pm 0.03. When the measured spectral indices are taken into account, the 148 GHz differential source counts are consistent with previous measurements at 30 GHz in the context of a source count model dominated by radio sources. Extrapolating with an appropriately rescaled model for the radio source counts, the Poisson contribution to the spatial power spectrum from synchrotron-dominated sources with flux density less than 20 mJy is C^{\rm Sync} = (2.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-6} \micro\kelvin^2.Comment: Accepted to Ap

    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Sunyaev Zel'dovich Selected Galaxy Clusters at 148 GHz in the 2008 Survey

    We report on twenty-three clusters detected blindly as Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) decrements in a 148 GHz, 455 square-degree map of the southern sky made with data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope 2008 observing season. All SZ detections announced in this work have confirmed optical counterparts. Ten of the clusters are new discoveries. One newly discovered cluster, ACT-CL J0102-4915, with a redshift of 0.75 (photometric), has an SZ decrement comparable to the most massive systems at lower redshifts. Simulations of the cluster recovery method reproduce the sample purity measured by optical follow-up. In particular, for clusters detected with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than six, simulations are consistent with optical follow-up that demonstrated this subsample is 100% pure. The simulations further imply that the total sample is 80% complete for clusters with mass in excess of 6x10^14 solar masses referenced to the cluster volume characterized by five hundred times the critical density. The Compton y -- X-ray luminosity mass comparison for the eleven best detected clusters visually agrees with both self-similar and non-adiabatic, simulation-derived scaling laws.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Measurement of dijet cross-sections in pp collisions at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy using the ATLAS detector

    Double-differential dijet cross-sections measured in pp collisions at the LHC with a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy are presented as functions of dijet mass and half the rapidity separation of the two highest-pT jets. These measurements are obtained using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb−¹, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2011. The data are corrected for detector effects so that cross-sections are presented at the particle level. Cross-sections are measured up to 5 TeV dijet mass using jets reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm for values of the jet radius parameter of 0.4 and 0.6. The cross-sections are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations by NLOJet++ corrected to account for non-perturbative effects. Comparisons with POWHEG predictions, using a next-to-leading-order matrix element calculation interfaced to a parton-shower Monte Carlo simulation, are also shown. Electroweak effects are accounted for in both cases. The quantitative comparison of data and theoretical predictions obtained using various parameterizations of the parton distribution functions is performed using a frequentist method. In general, good agreement with data is observed for the NLOJet++ theoretical predictions when using the CT10, NNPDF2.1 and MSTW 2008 PDF sets. Disagreement is observed when using the ABM11 and HERAPDF1.5 PDF sets for some ranges of dijet mass and half the rapidity separation. An example setting a lower limit on the compositeness scale for a model of contact interactions is presented, showing that the unfolded results can be used to constrain contributions to dijet production beyond that predicted by the Standard Model

    Measurement of the production cross section of prompt j/psi mesons in association with a W (+/-) boson in pp collisions root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The process pp -> W (+/-) J/psi provides a powerful probe of the production mechanism of charmonium in hadronic collisions, and is also sensitive to multiple parton interactions in the colliding protons. Using the 2011 ATLAS dataset of 4.5 fb(-1) of root s= 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC, the first observation is made of the production of W (+/-) + prompt J/psi events in hadronic collisions, using W (+/-) -> mu nu(mu) and J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-) center dot A yield of W (+/-) + prompt J/psi events is observed, with a statistical significance of 5.1 sigma. The production rate as a ratio to the inclusive W (+/-) boson production rate is measured, and the double parton scattering contribution to the cross section is estimated

    Infrared to millimetre observations of active galaxies

    This thesis presents measurements of the continuum emission at infrared (IR) to millimetre wavelengths from the nuclear regions of a number of active galaxies. In particular many observations have been made for the first time in the submillimetre regime. The observing methods at these wavelengths and the unique astrophysical information on the nature of active galaxies that results from submillimetre data are described. The central 1.5 kpc of the starburst galaxy M82 was mapped at 800 and 1100pm. The far-infrared (FIR) to millimetre continuum is due to thermal reradiation from dust grains at a temperature of 47 K, and the spatial distribution of the thermal emission shows a halo of grains extending to 500 pc from the plane of the galaxy centred on the 2.2 pm nucleus. The similar morphologies of the inillimetre, radio and X—ray emissions suggests that inverse Compton scattering of FIR photons dominates the observed X—ray luminosity of M82. An improved method of background subtraction from the IRAS database has been developed and applied to a 2° square field of the Leo Triplet, an interacting system of galaxies. The success of the technique is demonstrated by the detection of a low surface brightness FIR counterpart to the optical and HI tidal plume associated with NGC3628. The most sensitive submillimetre observations to date of radio—quiet quasars are described. Although no detections were obtained the upper limits were sufficient to show that, for one quasar PG0710+457, non—thermal emission is unlikely to be the source of the FIR luminosity. A submillimetre detection of a less luminous active emission-line galaxy, Mkn1183, was achieved at a level of 69 miy at 800pm. In this instance the FIR luminosity was attributable to thermal emission from dust. The interpretation of the continuum emission of an active galactic nucleus is complicated by the contribution of emission from the underlying galaxy to the nuclear fluxes. Endeavours to solve this problem have been made at IR, FIR and millimetre wavelengths and it is only by mapping the interstellar medium of an active galaxy in all of these wavebands that progress can be made. The beginning of such a programme of observations is presented in this thesis and is a major component of current research
