Encoding simplicial quantum geometry in group field theories
We show that a new symmetry requirement on the GFT field, in the context of
an extended GFT formalism, involving both Lie algebra and group elements,
leads, in 3d, to Feynman amplitudes with a simplicial path integral form based
on the Regge action, to a proper relation between the discrete connection and
the triad vectors appearing in it, and to a much more satisfactory and
transparent encoding of simplicial geometry already at the level of the GFT

Effective Hamiltonian Constraint from Group Field Theory
Spinfoam models provide a covariant formulation of the dynamics of loop
quantum gravity. They are non-perturbatively defined in the group field theory
(GFT) framework: the GFT partition function defines the sum of spinfoam
transition amplitudes over all possible (discretized) geometries and
topologies. The issue remains, however, of explicitly relating the specific
form of the group field theory action and the canonical Hamiltonian constraint.
Here, we suggest an avenue for addressing this issue. Our strategy is to expand
group field theories around non-trivial classical solutions and to interpret
the induced quadratic kinematical term as defining a Hamiltonian constraint on
the group field and thus on spin network wave functions. We apply our procedure
to Boulatov group field theory for 3d Riemannian gravity. Finally, we discuss
the relevance of understanding the spectrum of this Hamiltonian operator for
the renormalization of group field theories.Comment: 14 page
Alcohol consumption in Estonia and Finland: Finbalt survey 1994-2006
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alcohol consumption has been regarded as an important contributor to the high premature mortality rates. The objective of this paper was to provide an overview and comparison of alcohol consumption and its socio-demographic determinants among adults in Estonia and Finland.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was based on a 25-64-year-old subsample of nationally representative postal cross-sectional surveys conducted in Estonia (n = 10,340) and Finland (n = 19,672) during 1994-2006. Abstinence, frequency, and the amount of alcohol consumed were examined. Logistic regression models were used to test the socio-demographic differences in alcohol consumption at least once a week. The effect of socio-demographic factors on pure alcohol consumed per week was calculated using linear regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proportion of abstainers was 1.5 times higher among women than men in both countries. Throughout the study period, the amount of alcohol consumed per week increased for both genders in Estonia and for women in Finland, but was stable for men in Finland. In the final study year, medium risk amount of alcohol consumed per week was nearly 1.5 times higher among men in Estonia than in Finland, but about half that among women in Estonia than in Finland. Compared to ethnic majority in Estonia, alcohol consumption at least once a week was lower among men, but amount of pure alcohol drunk per week was higher among women of ethnic minority. In Finland, alcohol consumption at least once a week was more prevalent among women of ethnic minority, but the amount of pure alcohol drunk per week was lower for both gender groups of ethnic minority. Compared to married/cohabiting respondents, alcohol consumption at least once a week was less pronounced among single respondents in Finland, divorced or separated women in both countries, and widowed respondents in Estonia. Greater amount of alcohol consumed per week was more prevalent among single and divorced or separated respondents in Finland, but only among divorced or separated men in Estonia. Frequency of alcohol consumption was lower among less educated than higher educated respondents in Finland, but not in Estonia. The amount of consumed alcohol per week was higher among less educated men in Estonia, but lower among women with basic education in Finland.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Alcohol consumption has increased in Estonia and Finland. National alcohol policies should reflect findings of alcohol epidemiology in order to introduce measures that will reduce alcohol related harm in the population effectively.</p
Group field theory and simplicial quantum gravity
We present a new Group Field Theory for 4d quantum gravity. It incorporates
the constraints that give gravity from BF theory, and has quantum amplitudes
with the explicit form of simplicial path integrals for 1st order gravity. The
geometric interpretation of the variables and of the contributions to the
quantum amplitudes is manifest. This allows a direct link with other simplicial
gravity approaches, like quantum Regge calculus, in the form of the amplitudes
of the model, and dynamical triangulations, which we show to correspond to a

Strange particle production in proton-proton collisions at TeV with ALICE at the LHC
The production of mesons containing strange quarks (K, ) and both
singly and doubly strange baryons (, Anti-, and
+Anti-) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at
= 0.9 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are
obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009.
Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central
rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report
yields () of 0.184 0.002 stat. 0.006 syst. for K and
0.021 0.004 stat. 0.003 syst. for . For baryons, we find
= 0.048 0.001 stat. 0.004 syst. for , 0.047
0.002 stat. 0.005 syst. for Anti- and 0.0101 0.0020 stat.
0.0009 syst. for +Anti-. The results are also compared with
predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and
provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at
