Continuous consent and dignity in dentistry
Despite the heavy emphasis on consent in the ethical code of the General Dental Council (GDC), it is often overlooked that communication difficulties between patient and dentist can cause problems in maintaining genuine consent during interventions. Inconsistencies in the GDC's Standards for dental professionals and Principles of patient consent guidelines are examined in this article, and it is concluded that more emphasis must be placed on continuous consent as an ongoing process essential to maintaining patients' dignity in dentistry
Response, relaxation and transport in unconventional superconductors
We investigate the collision-limited electronic Raman response and the
attenuation of ultrasound in spin-singlet d-wave superconductors at low
temperatures. The dominating elastic collisions are treated within a t-matrix
approximation, which combines the description of weak (Born) and strong
(unitary) impurity scattering. In the long wavelength limit a two-fluid
description of both response and transport emerges. Collisions are here seen to
exclusively dominate the relaxational dynamics of the (Bogoliubov)
quasiparticle system and the analysis allows for a clear connection of response
and transport phenomena. When applied to quasi-2-d superconductors like the
cuprates, it turns out that the transport parameter associated with the Raman
scattering intensity for B1g and B2g photon polarization is closely related to
the corresponding components of the shear viscosity tensor, which dominates the
attenuation of ultrasound. At low temperatures we present analytic solutions of
the transport equations, resulting in a non-power-law behavior of the transport

Multispectral imaging of organ viability during uterine transplantation surgery in rabbits and sheep
Uterine transplantation surgery (UTx) has been proposed as a treatment for permanent absolute uterine
factor infertility (AUFI) in the case of the congenital absence or surgical removal of the uterus. Successful
surgical attachment of the organ and its associated vasculature is essential for the organ’s reperfusion and
long-term viability. Spectral imaging techniques have demonstrated the potential for the measurement of hemodynamics
in medical applications. These involve the measurement of reflectance spectra by acquiring images of
the tissue in different wavebands. Measures of tissue constituents at each pixel can then be extracted from these
spectra through modeling of the light–tissue interaction. A multispectral imaging (MSI) laparoscope was used in
sheep and rabbit UTx models to study short- and long-term changes in oxygen saturation following surgery. The
whole organ was imaged in the donor and recipient animals in parallel with point measurements from a pulse
oximeter. Imaging results confirmed the re-establishment of adequate perfusion in the transplanted organ after
surgery. Cornual oxygenation trends measured with MSI are consistent with pulse oximeter readings, showing
decreased StO2 immediately after anastomosis of the blood vessels. Long-term results show recovery of StO2 to
preoperative levels
Charged BTZ-like Black Holes in Higher Dimensions
Motivated by many worthwhile paper about (2 + 1)-dimensional BTZ black holes,
we generalize them to to (n + 1)-dimensional solutions, so called BTZ-like
solutions. We show that the electric field of BTZ-like solutions is the same as
(2 + 1)-dimensional BTZ black holes, and also their lapse functions are
approximately the same, too. By these similarities, it is also interesting to
investigate the geometric and thermodynamics properties of the BTZ-like
solutions. We find that, depending on the metric parameters, the BTZ-like
solutions may be interpreted as black hole solutions with inner (Cauchy) and
outer (event) horizons, an extreme black hole or naked singularity. Then, we
calculate thermodynamics quantities and conserved quantities, and show that
they satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we perform a stability
analysis in the canonical ensemble and show that the BTZ-like solutions are
stable in the whole phase space.Comment: 5 pages, two column format, one figur
Cluster Lenses
Clusters of galaxies are the most recently assembled, massive, bound
structures in the Universe. As predicted by General Relativity, given their
masses, clusters strongly deform space-time in their vicinity. Clusters act as
some of the most powerful gravitational lenses in the Universe. Light rays
traversing through clusters from distant sources are hence deflected, and the
resulting images of these distant objects therefore appear distorted and
magnified. Lensing by clusters occurs in two regimes, each with unique
observational signatures. The strong lensing regime is characterized by effects
readily seen by eye, namely, the production of giant arcs, multiple-images, and
arclets. The weak lensing regime is characterized by small deformations in the
shapes of background galaxies only detectable statistically. Cluster lenses
have been exploited successfully to address several important current questions
in cosmology: (i) the study of the lens(es) - understanding cluster mass
distributions and issues pertaining to cluster formation and evolution, as well
as constraining the nature of dark matter; (ii) the study of the lensed objects
- probing the properties of the background lensed galaxy population - which is
statistically at higher redshifts and of lower intrinsic luminosity thus
enabling the probing of galaxy formation at the earliest times right up to the
Dark Ages; and (iii) the study of the geometry of the Universe - as the
strength of lensing depends on the ratios of angular diameter distances between
the lens, source and observer, lens deflections are sensitive to the value of
cosmological parameters and offer a powerful geometric tool to probe Dark
Energy. In this review, we present the basics of cluster lensing and provide a

Detailed SZ study of 19 LoCuSS galaxy clusters: masses and temperatures out to the virial radius
We present 16-GHz AMI SZ observations of 19 clusters with L_X >7x10^37 W
(h50=1) selected from the LoCuS survey (0.142<z<0.295) and of A1758b, in the
FoV of A1758a. We detect 17 clusters with 5-23sigma peak surface brightnesses.
Cluster parameters are obtained using a Bayesian cluster analysis. We fit
isothermal beta-models to our data and assume the clusters are virialized (with
all the kinetic energy in gas internal energy). Our gas temperature, T_AMI, is
derived from AMI SZ data, not from X-ray spectroscopy. Cluster parameters
internal to r500 are derived assuming HSE. We find: (i) Different gNFW
parameterizations yield significantly different parameter degeneracies. (ii)
For h70 = 1, we find the virial radius r200 to be typically 1.6+/-0.1 Mpc and
the total mass M_T(r200) typically to be 2.0-2.5xM_T(r500).(iii) Where we have
found M_T X-ray (X) and weak-lensing (WL) values in the literature, there is
good agreement between WL and AMI estimates (with M_{T,AMI}/M_{T,WL}
=1.2^{+0.2}_{-0.3} and =1.0+/-0.1 for r500 and r200, respectively). In
comparison, most Suzaku/Chandra estimates are higher than for AMI (with
M_{T,X}/M_{T,AMI}=1.7+/-0.2 within r500), particularly for the stronger
mergers.(iv) Comparison of T_AMI to T_X sheds light on high X-ray masses: even
at large r, T_X can substantially exceed T_AMI in mergers. The use of these
higher T_X values will give higher X-ray masses. We stress that large-r T_SZ
and T_X data are scarce and must be increased. (v) Despite the paucity of data,
there is an indication of a relation between merger activity and SZ
ellipticity. (vi) At small radius (but away from any cooling flow) the SZ
signal (and T_AMI) is less sensitive to ICM disturbance than the X-ray signal
(and T_X) and, even at high r, mergers affect n^2-weighted X-ray data more than
n-weighted SZ, implying significant shocking or clumping or both occur even in

The XXL Survey IV. Mass-temperature relation of the bright cluster sample
The XXL survey is the largest survey carried out by XMM-Newton. Covering an area of 50deg, the survey contains galaxy clusters out to a redshift 2 and to an X-ray flux limit of . This paper is part of the first release of XXL results focussed on the bright cluster sample. We investigate the scaling relation between weak-lensing mass and X-ray temperature for the brightest clusters in XXL. The scaling relation is used to estimate the mass of all 100 clusters in XXL-100-GC. Based on a subsample of 38 objects that lie within the intersection of the northern XXL field and the publicly available CFHTLenS catalog, we derive the of each system with careful considerations of the systematics. The clusters lie at and span a range of . We combine our sample with 58 clusters from the literature, increasing the range out to 10keV. To date, this is the largest sample of clusters with measurements that has been used to study the mass-temperature relation. The fit () to the XXL clusters returns a slope and intrinsic scatter ; the scatter is dominated by disturbed clusters. The fit to the combined sample of 96 clusters is in tension with self-similarity, and . Overall our results demonstrate the feasibility of ground-based weak-lensing scaling relation studies down to cool systems of temperature and highlight that the current data and samples are a limit to our statistical precision. As such we are unable to determine whether the validity of hydrostatic equilibrium is a function of halo mass. An enlarged sample of cool systems, deeper weak-lensing data, and robust modelling of the selection function will help to explore these issues further
Multispectral Imaging of Organ Viability during Uterine Transplantation Surgery
Uterine transplantation surgery has been proposed as a treatment for permanent absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI) in the case of loss of the uterus. Due to the complexity of the vasculature correct reanastomosis of the blood supply during transplantation surgery is a crucial step to ensure reperfusion and viability of the organ. While techniques such as fluorescent dye imaging have been proposed to visualise perfusion there is no gold standard for intraoperative visualisation of tissue oxygenation. In this paper results from a liquid crystal tuneable filter (LCTF)-based multispectral imaging (MSI) laparoscope are described. The system was used to monitor uterine oxygen saturation (SaO) before and after transplantation. Results from surgeries on two animal models (rabbits and sheep) are presented. A feature-based registration algorithm was used to correct for misalignment induced by breathing or peristalsis in the tissues of interest prior to analysis. An absorption spectrum was calculated at each spatial pixel location using reflectance data from a reference standard, and the relative contributions from oxy- and deoxyhaemoglobin were calculated using a least squares regression algorithm with non-negativity constraints. Results acquired during animal surgeries show that cornual oxygenation changes are consistent with those observed in point measurements taken using a pulse oximeter, showing reduced SaO following reanastomosis. Values obtained using the MSI laparoscope were lower than those taken with the pulse oximeter, which may be due to the latter’s use of the pulsatile arterial blood signal. Future work incorporating immunological test results will help to correlate SaO levels with surgical outcomes
