Are Post-Newtonian templates faithful and effectual in detecting gravitational signals from neutron star binaries?
We compute the overlap function between Post-Newtonian (PN) templates and
gravitational signals emitted by binary systems composed of one neutron star
and one point mass, obtained by a perturbative approach. The calculations are
performed for different stellar models and for different detectors, to estimate
how effectual and faithful the PN templates are, and to establish whether
effects related to the internal structure of neutron stars may possibly be

Comparison of advanced gravitational-wave detectors
We compare two advanced designs for gravitational-wave antennas in terms of
their ability to detect two possible gravitational wave sources. Spherical,
resonant mass antennas and interferometers incorporating resonant sideband
extraction (RSE) were modeled using experimentally measurable parameters. The
signal-to-noise ratio of each detector for a binary neutron star system and a
rapidly rotating stellar core were calculated. For a range of plausible
parameters we found that the advanced LIGO interferometer incorporating RSE
gave higher signal-to-noise ratios than a spherical detector resonant at the
same frequency for both sources. Spheres were found to be sensitive to these
sources at distances beyond our galaxy. Interferometers were sensitive to these
sources at far enough distances that several events per year would be expected
Conformal structures of static vacuum data
In the Cauchy problem for asymptotically flat vacuum data the solution-jets
along the cylinder at space-like infinity develop in general logarithmic
singularities at the critical sets at which the cylinder touches future/past
null infinity. The tendency of these singularities to spread along the null
generators of null infinity obstructs the development of a smooth conformal
structure at null infinity. For the solution-jets arising from time reflection
symmetric data to extend smoothly to the critical sets it is necessary that the
Cotton tensor of the initial three-metric h satisfies a certain conformally
invariant condition (*) at space-like infinity, it is sufficient that h be
asymptotically static at space-like infinity. The purpose of this article is to
characterize the gap between these conditions. We show that with the class of
metrics which satisfy condition (*) on the Cotton tensor and a certain
non-degeneracy requirement is associated a one-form with conformally
invariant differential . We provide two criteria: If is real
analytic, is closed, and one of it integrals satisfies a certain
equation then h is conformal to static data near space-like infinity. If h is
smooth, is asymptotically closed, and one of it integrals satisfies a
certain equation asymptotically then h is asymptotically conformal to static

Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of

Is upper gastrointestinal radiography a cost-effective alternative to a Helicobacter pylori âTest and Treatâ strategy for patients with suspected peptic ulcer disease?
Current clinical consensus supports an initial Helicobacter pylori (HP) âtest and treatâ approach when compared to immediate endoscopy for patients with suspected peptic ulcer disease. Alternative diagnostic approaches that incorporate upper GI radiography (UGI) have not been previously evaluated. We sought to determine the cost effectiveness of UGI compared to a HP test and treat strategy, incorporating recent data addressing the reduced prevalence of HP, lower cost of diagnostic interventions, and reduced attribution of PUD to HP. METHODS : Using decision analysis, three diagnostic and treatment strategies were evaluated: 1) Test and Treat âinitial HP serology, treat patients who test positive with HP eradication and antiulcer therapy; 2) Initial UGI series âtreat all patients with documented ulcer disease with HP eradication and antiulcer therapy; and 3) Initial UGI series, HP serology if ulcer present â treat ulcer and HP based on diagnostic test results. RESULTS : The estimated cost per ulcer cured for each strategy were as follows: test and treat, 3,690; and UGI with serology, 498; initial UGI, 620. When UGI reimbursement was decreased to less than $50, the UGI strategies yielded a lower cost per patient treated than the test and treat strategy. CONCLUSION : At the current level of reimbursement, UGI should not be considered a cost-effective alternative to the HP test and treat strategy for the initial evaluation of patients with suspected peptic ulcer disease.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73722/1/j.1572-0241.2000.01837.x.pd
Magnetic Braking in Differentially Rotating, Relativistic Stars
We study the magnetic braking and viscous damping of differential rotation in
incompressible, uniform density stars in general relativity. Differentially
rotating stars can support significantly more mass in equilibrium than
nonrotating or uniformly rotating stars. The remnant of a binary neutron star
merger or supernova core collapse may produce such a "hypermassive" neutron
star. Although a hypermassive neutron star may be stable on a dynamical
timescale, magnetic braking and viscous damping of differential rotation will
ultimately alter the equilibrium structure, possibly leading to delayed
catastrophic collapse. Here we consider the slow-rotation, weak-magnetic field
limit in which E_rot << E_mag << W, where E_rot is the rotational kinetic
energy, E_mag is the magnetic energy, and W is the gravitational binding energy
of the star. We assume the system to be axisymmetric and solve the MHD
equations in both Newtonian gravitation and general relativity. Toroidal
magnetic fields are generated whenever the angular velocity varies along the
initial poloidal field lines. We find that the toroidal fields and angular
velocities oscillate independently along each poloidal field line, which
enables us to transform the original 2+1 equations into 1+1 form and solve them
along each field line independently. The incoherent oscillations on different
field lines stir up turbulent-like motion in tens of Alfven timescales ("phase
mixing"). In the presence of viscosity, the stars eventually are driven to
uniform rotation, with the energy contained in the initial differential
rotation going into heat. Our evolution calculations serve as qualitative
guides and benchmarks for future, more realistic MHD simulations in full 3+1

The chemical compound 'Heatin' stimulates hypocotyl elongation and interferes with the Arabidopsis NIT1-subfamily of nitrilases
Temperature passively affects biological processes involved in plant growth. Therefore, it is challenging to study the dedicated temperature signalling pathways that orchestrate thermomorphogenesis, a suite of elongation growth-based adaptations that enhance leaf-cooling capacity. We screened a chemical library for compounds that restored hypocotyl elongation in the pif4-2-deficient mutant background at warm temperature conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana to identify modulators of thermomorphogenesis. The small aromatic compound 'Heatin', containing 1-iminomethyl-2-naphthol as a pharmacophore, was selected as an enhancer of elongation growth. We show that ARABIDOPSIS ALDEHYDE OXIDASES redundantly contribute to Heatin-mediated hypocotyl elongation. Following a chemical proteomics approach, the members of the NITRILASE1-subfamily of auxin biosynthesis enzymes were identified among the molecular targets of Heatin. Our data reveal that nitrilases are involved in promotion of hypocotyl elongation in response to high temperature and Heatin-mediated hypocotyl elongation requires the NITRILASE1-subfamily members, NIT1 and NIT2. Heatin inhibits NIT1-subfamily enzymatic activity in vitro and the application of Heatin accordingly results in the accumulation of NIT1-subfamily substrate indole-3-acetonitrile in vivo. However, levels of the NIT1-subfamily product, bioactive auxin (indole-3-acetic acid), were also significantly increased. It is likely that the stimulation of hypocotyl elongation by Heatin might be independent of its observed interaction with NITRILASE1-subfamily members. However, nitrilases may contribute to the Heatin response by stimulating indole-3-acetic acid biosynthesis in an indirect way.
