Detecting nitrogen oxide emissions in Qatar and quantifying emission factors of gas-fired power plants : a 4-year study
Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2), produced in urban areas and industrial facilities (particularly in fossil-fuel-fired power plants), are major sources of air pollutants, with implications for human health, leading local and national authorities to estimate their emissions using inventories. In Qatar, these inventories are not regularly updated, while the country is experiencing fast economic growth. Here, we use spaceborne retrievals of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns at high spatial resolution from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to estimate NOx emissions in Qatar from 2019 to 2022 with a flux-divergence scheme, according to which emissions are calculated as the sum of a transport term and a sink term representing the three-body reaction comprising NO2 and hydroxyl radical (OH). Our results highlight emissions from gas power plants in the northeast of the country and from the urban area of the capital, Doha. The emissions from cement plants in the west and different industrial facilities in the southeast are underestimated due to frequent low-quality measurements of NO2 columns in these areas. Our top-down model estimates a weekly cycle, with lower emissions on Fridays compared to the rest of the week, which is consistent with social norms in the country, and an annual cycle, with mean emissions of 9.56 kt per month for the 4-year period. These monthly emissions differ from the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service global anthropogenic emissions (CAMS-GLOB-ANT_v5.3) and the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGARv6.1) global inventories, for which the annual cycle is less marked and the average emissions are respectively 1.67 and 1.68 times higher. Our emission estimates are correlated with local electricity generation and allow us to infer a mean NOx emission factor of 0.557 t NOx GWh−1 for the three gas power plants in the Ras Laffan area
Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb of collision data
We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau
leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb of integrated luminosity
collected in collisions at =1.96 TeV with the D0 detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state
including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets,
one or two of them tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate
signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final
state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the
tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of
\TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected
sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with
electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration
with 2.3 fb of data. We measure a combined cross section of
\SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Measurement of the t-channel single top quark production cross section
The D0 collaboration reports direct evidence for electroweak production of
single top quarks through the t-channel exchange of a virtual W boson. This is
the first analysis to isolate an individual single top quark production
channel. We select events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing
transverse energy, and two, three or four jets from 2.3 fb^-1 of ppbar
collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. One or two of the jets are
identified as containing a b hadron. We combine three multivariate techniques
optimized for the t-channel process to measure the t- and s-channel cross
sections simultaneously. We measure cross sections of 3.14 +0.94 -0.80 pb for
the t-channel and 1.05 +-0.81 pb for the s-channel. The measured t-channel
result is found to have a significance of 4.8 standard deviations and is
consistent with the standard model prediction.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
b-Jet Identification in the D0 Experiment
Algorithms distinguishing jets originating from b quarks from other jet
flavors are important tools in the physics program of the D0 experiment at the
Fermilab Tevatron p-pbar collider. This article describes the methods that have
been used to identify b-quark jets, exploiting in particular the long lifetimes
of b-flavored hadrons, and the calibration of the performance of these
algorithms based on collider data.Comment: submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research
Measurement of the dijet invariant mass cross section in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV
The inclusive dijet production double differential cross section as a
function of the dijet invariant mass and of the largest absolute rapidity of
the two jets with the largest transverse momentum in an event is measured in
proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using 0.7 fb^{-1}
integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. The measurement is performed in six rapidity regions up to a maximum
rapidity of 2.4. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are found
to be in agreement with the data.Comment: Published in Phys. Lett. B, 693, (2010), 531-538, 8 pages, 2 figures,

Double parton interactions in photon+3 jet events in ppbar collisions sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We have used a sample of photon+3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment
with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb^-1 to determine the fraction of
events with double parton scattering (f_DP) in a single ppbar collision at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma_eff), a
process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the
nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in pT) jet
transverse momentum pT_jet2 within the range 15 < pT_jet2 < 30 GeV. In this
range, f_DP varies between 0.23 < f_DP < 0.47, while sigma_eff has the average
value sigma_eff_ave = 16.4 +- 0.3(stat) +- 2.3(syst) mb.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
Search for single vector-like quarks in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for hypothetical vector-like quarks in ppbar collisions
at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4
fb^(-1). We select events with a final state composed of a W or Z boson and a
jet consistent with a heavy object decay. We observe no significant excess in
comparison to the background prediction and set limits on production cross
sections for vector-like quarks decaying to W+jet and Z+jet. These are the most
stringent mass limits for electroweak single vector-like quark production at
hadron colliders.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7
(3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in the lepton+jets channel in proton-antiproton collisions at =1.96 TeV
We present a measurement of the inclusive top quark pair production cross
section in \ppbar collisions at (\sqrt{s}=1.96) TeV utilizing data
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \lumi\ collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing
one high- isolated electron or muon and at least two jets, and we
perform three analyses: one exploiting specific kinematic features of \ttbar
events, the second using -jet identification, and the third using both
techniques to separate \ttbar\ signal from background. In the third case, we
determine simultaneously the cross section and the ratio of the
production rates of +heavy flavor jets and +light flavor jets, which
reduces the impact of the systematic uncertainties related to the background
estimation. Assuming a top quark mass of 172.5 GeV, we obtain
pb. This result agrees with
predictions of the standard model.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Measurement of Z/gamma*+jet+X angular distributions in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross
sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and
|y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an
excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross
section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are
crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event
generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these
measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the
experimental sensitivity to rare signals.Comment: Published in Physics Letters B 682 (2010), pp. 370-380. 15 pages, 6
