    Effect of pretreatment with low-frequency ultrasound on quality parameters in gulupa (Passiflora edulis sims) pulp

    The Gulupa (Passiflora edulis f. edulis Sims) is an expression of South America’s tropics’ biodiversity, and a source of B vitamins and amino acids. It is a climacteric export fruit for which it is necessary to incorporate emerging technologies for its conservation and transport. This work investigated the effect of ultrasound on gulupa pulp and verified the stability of the characters of interest in the shelf life of 20 days. Six treatments and a control sample were used, evaluated in triplicate, and varied in frequency (30 and 40 kHz) with an exposure time of 10, 20, and 30 min. A statistical analysis of unidirectional variances and Dunnett’s test was used. It was found that the ultrasound treatments did not affect the pH or the titratable acidity. Soluble solid results presented a significant increase (p < 0.05) (from 13.4 to 14.8% w/v) in the antioxidant capacity (from 1.13 to 1.54 ”mol Trolox Equivalent (TE)/g by the ABTS‱+ (2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) Cationic Radical Assay and from 3.3 to 3.7 ”mol TE/g by the DPPH· (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil) Radical Scavenging Assay). During the shelf life, ascorbic acid was the parameter that varied most (p < 0.05). It decreased from 42.7 to 21.6 mg ascorbic acid/100 g of pulp in the control sample. However, a smaller decrease was observed (23.8–24.5 mg ascorbic acid/100 g of pulp) in the 40 kHz treatments. The smallest global color difference (∆E) for the control was found in the 40 kHz treatment at 30 min through the entire shelf life (day 0 to 20).     Casimir type effects for scalar fields interacting with material slabs

    We study the field theoretical model of a scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneities in form of one and two finite width mirrors (material slabs). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. For the single layer system we develop a rigorous calculation method and derive explicitly the propagator of the theory, S-matrix elements and the Casimir self-energy of the slab. Detailed investigation of particular limits of self-energy is presented, and connection to know cases is discussed. The calculation method is found applicable to the two mirrors case as well. By means of it we derive the corresponding Casimir energy and analyze it. For particular values of the parameters of the model the obtained results recover the Lifshitz formula. We also propose a procedure to obtain unambiguously the finite Casimir \textit{self}-energy of a single slab without reference to any renormalizations. We hope that our approach can be applied to calculation of Casimir self-energies in other demanded cases (such as dielectric ball, etc.)Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, published version, significant changes in Section 4.

    Prescription for COVID-19 by non-medical professionals during the pandemic in Colombia: a cross-sectional study

    Antecedentes: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha llevado a un aumento en el comportamiento de la automedicaciĂłn (SM). Dada la liberaciĂłn masiva de informaciĂłn engañosa durante la pandemia, algunas farmacias recomiendan medicamentos como la ivermectina, la azitromicina, la hidroxicloroquina, entre otros, que no son Ăștiles para prevenir o tratar la COVID-19 y podrĂ­an exponer a los pacientes a efectos secundarios innecesarios e interacciones con otros medicamentos. La gente debe estar al tanto de los usos aprobados y no aprobados, y de los posibles efectos secundarios de estos medicamentos. JustificaciĂłn: El objetivo de este estudio era conocer los medicamentos, incluidos los productos naturales y los medicamentos homeopĂĄticos, ofrecidos por los establecimientos farmacĂ©uticos colombianos para la prevenciĂłn y el tratamiento de la COVID-19, asĂ­ como la informaciĂłn proporcionada sobre el uso seguro del producto. MĂ©todos: El estudio se realizĂł utilizando el mĂ©todo de compras misteriosas, recopilando datos a travĂ©s de llamadas telefĂłnicas a cada uno de los establecimientos por parte de una persona capacitada que fingĂ­a ser un paciente con sĂ­ntomas de COVID-19. El estudio incluyĂł 482 establecimientos farmacĂ©uticos de 16 departamentos colombianos. Resultados: De los 59 medicamentos sugeridos por las farmacias, los mĂĄs recomendados fueron azitromicina, ivermectina, acetaminofĂ©n, ibuprofeno y aspirina. La dosis recomendada se indicĂł en el 85,5% (236) de los establecimientos farmacĂ©uticos, y el 14,5% (40) de ellos reportĂł los efectos adversos mĂĄs comunes del producto recomendado. Alrededor del 9,4 % (26) de los establecimientos informaron de posibles interacciones de los medicamentos y sustancias recomendados con alimentos, bebidas o suplementos. ConclusiĂłn: La mayorĂ­a de los establecimientos farmacĂ©uticos incluidos en el estudio promovieron una automedicaciĂłn inadecuada para la COVID-19 en Colombia durante la pandemia.Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the behavior of self-medication (SM). Given the massive release of misleading information during the pandemic, some pharmacies recommend drugs such as ivermectin, azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine among others, which are not useful for preventing or treating COVID-19 and could expose patients to unnecessary side effects and interactions with other medications. People should be aware of the approved and non-approved uses, and potential side effects of these drugs. Rationale: The aim of this study was to know the drugs, including natural products and homeopathic drugs, offered by Colombian pharmaceutical establishments for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, as well as the information provided on the safe use of the product. Methods: The study was done using the mystery shopping method, collecting data through telephone calls to each of the establishments by a trained individual pretending to be a patient with COVID-19 symptoms. The study included 482 pharmaceutical establishments from 16 Colombian departments. Results: Of 59 drugs suggested by pharmacies, the most recommended were azithromycin, ivermectin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin. The recommended dose was indicated in 85.5% (236) of the pharmaceutical establishments, and 14.5% (40) of them reported the most common adverse effects of the recommended product. About 9.4% (26) of the establishments reported possible interactions of the recommended drugs and substances with food, beverages, or supplements.     Time dependence for barrier penetration is considered in the phase space. An asymptotic phase-space propagator for nonrelativistic scattering on a one - dimensional barrier is constructed. The propagator has a form universal for various initial state preparations and local potential barriers. It is manifestly causal and includes time-lag effects and quantum spreading. Specific features of quantum dynamics which disappear in the standard semi-classical approximation are revealed. The propagator may be applied to calculation of the final momentum and coordinate distributions, for particles transmitted through or reflected from the potential barrier, as well as for elucidating the tunneling time problem.Comment: 18 pages, LATEX, no figure

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE

    Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state

    A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets. The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version includes a minor typo correction that will be submitted as an erratu
