    Study of CP violation in Dalitz-plot analyses of B0 --> K+K-KS, B+ --> K+K-K+, and B+ --> KSKSK+

    We perform amplitude analyses of the decays B0K+KKS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, B+K+KK+B^+ \rightarrow K^+K^-K^+, and B+KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, and measure CP-violating parameters and partial branching fractions. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 470×106470\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} decays, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. For B+K+KK+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, we find a direct CP asymmetry in B+ϕ(1020)K+B^+ \to \phi(1020)K^+ of ACP=(12.8±4.4±1.3)A_{CP}= (12.8\pm 4.4 \pm 1.3)%, which differs from zero by 2.8σ2.8 \sigma. For B0K+KKS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, we measure the CP-violating phase βeff(ϕ(1020)KS0)=(21±6±2)\beta_{\rm eff} (\phi(1020)K^0_S) = (21\pm 6 \pm 2)^\circ. For B+KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, we measure an overall direct CP asymmetry of ACP=(45+4±2)A_{CP} = (4 ^{+4}_{-5} \pm 2)%. We also perform an angular-moment analysis of the three channels, and determine that the fX(1500)f_X(1500) state can be described well by the sum of the resonances f0(1500)f_0(1500), f2(1525)f_2^{\prime}(1525), and f0(1710)f_0(1710).Comment: 35 pages, 68 postscript figures. v3 - minor modifications to agree with published versio

    Meson-meson interactions in a nonperturbative chiral approach

    A non-perturbative method which combines constraints from chiral symmetry breaking and coupled channel unitarity is used to describe the meson-meson interaction up to about 1.2 GeV. The approach uses the O(p^2) and O(p^4) chiral Lagrangians. The seven free parameters of the O(p^4) Lagrangian are fitted to the data. The results are in good agreement with a vast amount of experimental analyses. The amplitudes develop poles in the complex plane corresponding to the f0, a0, rho, K*, phi, sigma and kappa resonances; the latter two, very broad. The total and partial decay widths of the resonances are also well reproduced. Further extensions and applications of this chiral non-perturbative scheme are also discussed

    Exotic ρ±ρ0\rho^\pm\rho^0 state photoproduction

    It is shown that the list of unusual mesons planned for a careful study in photoproduction can be extended by the exotic states X±(1600)X^\pm(1600) with IG(JPC)=2+(2++)I^G(J ^{PC})=2^+(2^{++}) which should be looked for in the ρ±ρ0\rho^\pm\rho^0 decay channels in the reactions γNρ±ρ0N\gamma N\to\rho^\pm\rho^0N and γNρ±ρ0Δ\gamma N\to\rho^\pm \rho^0\Delta. The full classification of the ρ±ρ0\rho^\pm\rho^0 states by their quantum numbers is presented. A simple model for the spin structure of the γpf2(1270)p \gamma p\to f_2(1270)p, γpa20(1320)p\gamma p\to a^0_2(1320)p, and γNX±(N,Δ)\gamma N\to X^\pm (N, \Delta) reaction amplitudes is formulated and the tentative estimates of the corresponding cross sections at the incident photon energy Eγ6E_\gamma\approx 6 GeV are obtained: σ(γpf2(1270)p)0.12\sigma(\gamma p\to f_2(1270)p)\approx0.12 μ\mub, σ(γpa20(1320)p)0.25 \sigma(\gamma p\to a^0_2(1320)p)\approx0.25 μ\mub, σ(γNX±Nρ±ρ0N)0.018\sigma(\gamma N\to X^\pm N\to\rho^\pm\rho^0N)\approx0.018 μ\mub, and σ(γpXΔ++ρρ0Δ++)0.031\sigma(\gamma p\to X^-\Delta^{++ }\to\rho^-\rho^0\Delta^{++})\approx0.031 μ\mub. The problem of the X±X^\pm signal extraction from the natural background due to the other π±π0π+π\pi^\pm\pi^0 \pi^+\pi^- production channels is discussed. In particular the estimates are presented for the γph1(1170)π+n\gamma p\to h_1(1170)\pi^+n, γpρ+nπ+π0π+πn\gamma p\to\rho'^{+}n\to \pi^+\pi^0\pi^+\pi^-n, and γpωρ0p\gamma p\to\omega\rho^0p reaction cross sections. Our main conclusion is that the search for the exotic X±(2+(2++))X^\pm(2^+(2^{++})) states is quite feasible at JEFLAB facility. The expected yield of the γNX±Nρ±ρ0N\gamma N\to X^\pm N\to\rho^\pm\rho^0N events in a 30-day run at the 100% detection efficiency approximates 2.8×1062.8\times10^6 events.Comment: 19 pages, revtex, 1 figure in postscipt, some comments and references added, a few minor typos corrected, to be published in Phys.     Energy gain of wetted-foam implosions with auxiliary heating for inertial fusion studies

    Low convergence ratio implosions (where wetted-foam layers are used to limit capsule convergence, achieving improved robustness to instability growth) and auxiliary heating (where electron beams are used to provide collisionless heating of a hotspot) are two promising techniques that are being explored for inertial fusion energy applications. In this paper, a new analytic study is presented to understand and predict the performance of these implosions. Firstly, conventional gain models are adapted to produce gain curves for fixed convergence ratios, which are shown to well-describe previously simulated results. Secondly, auxiliary heating is demonstrated to be well understood and interpreted through the burn-up fraction of the deuterium-tritium fuel, with the gradient of burn-up with respect to burn-averaged temperature shown to provide good qualitative predictions of the effectiveness of this technique for a given implosion. Simulations of auxiliary heating for a range of implosions are presented in support of this and demonstrate that this heating can have significant benefit for high gain implosions, being most effective when the burn-averaged temperature is between 5 and 20 keV

    The Coupling of Alternative Splicing and Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay

    Most human genes exhibit alternative splicing, but not all alternatively spliced transcripts produce functional proteins. Computational and experimental results indicate that a substantial fraction of alternative splicing events in humans result in mRNA isoforms that harbor a premature termination codon (PTC). These transcripts are predicted to be degraded by the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway. One explanation for the abundance of PTC-containing isoforms is that they represent splicing errors that are identified and degraded by the NMD pathway. Another potential explanation for this startling observation is that cells may link alternative splicing and NMD to regulate the abundance of mRNA transcripts. This mechanism, which we call "Regulated Unproductive Splicing and Translation" (RUST), has been experimentally shown to regulate expression of a wide variety of genes in many organisms from yeast to human. It is frequently employed for autoregulation of proteins that affect the splicing process itself. Thus, alternative splicing and NMD act together to play an important role in regulating gene expression

    Search for Pomeron--Pomeron-2pipi events in 205 GeV/c pipisupsup -p interactions

    Pomeron- pomeron-2 pi vertices were sought in the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/p at 205 GeV/c. From a sample of 1 86 of these events, about 2/3 were extracted for which the rapidity ordering of the four outgoing particles makes them candidates for the double-Pomeron exchange process (i.e., the fastest and the slowest particle are respectively a pi /sup -/ and a proton). A separation from single-Pomeron processes was attempted with the help of a rapidity triangle plot. The number of possible double-Pomeron-type events was also estimated from a Regge-propagator fit to the nonhomogeneous distribution of the events within this triangle. The number of such events obtained by either method gives a cross section upper limit of 85 mu b for double-Pomeron exchange, consistent with the predictions of a pion-pole dominance model. (auth
