Metastability and Transient Effects in Vortex Matter Near a Decoupling Transition
We examine metastable and transient effects both above and below the
first-order decoupling line in a 3D simulation of magnetically interacting
pancake vortices. We observe pronounced transient and history effects as well
as supercooling and superheating between the 3D coupled, ordered and 2D
decoupled, disordered phases. In the disordered supercooled state as a function
of DC driving, reordering occurs through the formation of growing moving
channels of the ordered phase. No channels form in the superheated region;
instead the ordered state is homogeneously destroyed. When a sequence of
current pulses is applied we observe memory effects. We find a ramp rate
dependence of the V(I) curves on both sides of the decoupling transition. The

Electrical transport studies of quench condensed Bi films at the initial stage of film growth: Structural transition and the possible formation of electron droplets
The electrical transport properties of amorphous Bi films prepared by
sequential quench deposition have been studied in situ. A
superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition was observed as the film was made
increasingly thicker, consistent with previous studies. Unexpected behavior was
found at the initial stage of film growth, a regime not explored in detail
prior to the present work. As the temperature was lowered, a positive
temperature coefficient of resistance (dR/dT > 0) emerged, with the resistance
reaching a minimum before the dR/dT became negative again. This behavior was
accompanied by a non-linear and asymmetric I-V characteristic. As the film
became thicker, conventional variable-range hopping (VRH) was recovered. We
attribute the observed crossover in the electrical transport properties to an
amorphous to granular structural transition. The positive dR/dT found in the
amorphous phase of Bi formed at the initial stage of film growth was
qualitatively explained by the formation of metallic droplets within the

NR4A1 Deletion in Marginal Zone B Cells Exacerbates Atherosclerosis in Mice-Brief Report.
OBJECTIVE: NR4A orphan receptors have been well studied in vascular and myeloid cells where they play important roles in the regulation of inflammation in atherosclerosis. NR4A1 (nerve growth factor IB) is among the most highly induced transcription factors in B cells following BCR (B-cell receptor) stimulation. Given that B cells substantially contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, we examined whether NR4A1 regulates B-cell function during atherogenesis. Approach and Results: We found that feeding Ldlr-/- mice a Western diet substantially increased Nr4a1 expression in marginal zone B (MZB) cells compared with follicular B cells. We then generated Ldlr-/- mice with complete B- or specific MZB-cell deletion of Nr4a1. Complete B-cell deletion of Nr4a1 led to increased atherosclerosis, which was accompanied by increased T follicular helper cell-germinal center axis response, as well as increased serum total cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Interestingly, specific MZB-cell deletion of Nr4a1 increased atherosclerosis in association with an increased T follicular helper-germinal center response but without any impact on serum cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Nr4a1-/- MZB cells showed decreased PDL1 (programmed death ligand-1) expression, which may have contributed to the enhanced T follicular helper response. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal a previously unsuspected role for NR4A1 in the atheroprotective role of MZB cells
The effect of a 13-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine on circulating antibodies against oxidized LDL and phosphorylcholine in man: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial
using the Prevenar-13 vaccine. Twenty-four healthy male volunteers were vaccinated with Prevenar-13, either three times, twice or once in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized single center clinical study. Anti-pneumococcal wall, oxLDL and phosphorycholine antibody levels were measured at a fixed serum dilution, as well as circulating lipid levels over the course of 68 weeks. A significant increase in anti-oxLDL IgG and IgM was seen in the group receiving two doses six months apart compared to the placebo. However, these differences were not observed in the groups receiving a single dose, two doses one month apart, or three doses. This study shows that vaccination with Prevenar-13 does not result in robust anti-oxLDL IgM levels in humans. Further research would be required to test alternative pneumococcal-based vaccines, vaccination regimens or study populations, such as cardiovascular disease patients.Biopharmaceutic
Computational Nuclear Physics and Post Hartree-Fock Methods
We present a computational approach to infinite nuclear matter employing
Hartree-Fock theory, many-body perturbation theory and coupled cluster theory.
These lectures are closely linked with those of chapters 9, 10 and 11 and serve
as input for the correlation functions employed in Monte Carlo calculations in
chapter 9, the in-medium similarity renormalization group theory of dense
fermionic systems of chapter 10 and the Green's function approach in chapter
11. We provide extensive code examples and benchmark calculations, allowing
thereby an eventual reader to start writing her/his own codes. We start with an
object-oriented serial code and end with discussions on strategies for porting

Flux-lattice melting in two-dimensional disordered superconductors
The flux line lattice melting transition in two-dimensional pure and
disordered superconductors is studied by a Monte Carlo simulation using the
lowest Landau level approximation and quasi-periodic boundary condition on a
plane. The position of the melting line was determined from the diffraction
pattern of the superconducting order parameter. In the clean case we confirmed
the results from earlier studies which show the existence of a quasi-long range
ordered vortex lattice at low temperatures. Adding frozen disorder to the
system the melting transition line is shifted to slightly lower fields. The
correlations of the order parameter for translational long range order of the
vortex positions seem to decay slightly faster than a power law (in agreement
with the theory of Carpentier and Le Doussal) although a simple power law decay
cannot be excluded. The corresponding positional glass correlation function
decays as a power law establishing the existence of a quasi-long range ordered
positional glass formed by the vortices. The correlation function
characterizing a phase coherent vortex glass decays however exponentially
ruling out the possible existence of a phase coherent vortex glass phase.Comment: 12 pages, 21 figures, final version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Tim-1 mucin domain-mutant mice display exacerbated atherosclerosis
Increasing evidence has shown that immune checkpoint molecules of the T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (Tim) family are associated with diverse physiologic and pathologic processes. Previous studies of the role of Tim-1 in atherosclerosis using anti-Tim-1 antibodies have yielded contradictory results. We thus aimed to investigate atherosclerosis development in Tim-1 deficient mice.Mice with a specific loss of the Tim-1 mucin-domain (Tim-1Îmucin) and C57BL/6 (WT) mice received a single injection of a recombinant adeno-associated virus encoding murine Pcsk9 (rAAV2/8-D377Y-mPcsk9) and were fed a Western type diet for 13 weeks to introduce atherosclerosis.Tim-1Îmucin mice developed significantly larger lesions in the aortic root compared to WT mice, with significantly more macrophages and a trend towards a larger necrotic core. Furthermore, Tim-1Îmucin mice showed a significant loss of IL-10+ B cells and regulatory B cell subsets and increased pro-atherogenic splenic follicular B cells compared to WT mice. Moreover, Tim-1Îmucin mice displayed a dramatic reduction in Th2-associated immune response compared to controls but we did not observe any changes in humoral immunity.In summary, Tim-1Îmucin mice displayed a profound impairment in IL-10+ B cells and an imbalance in the Th1/Th2 ratio, which associated with exacerbated atherosclerosis.Biopharmaceutic
Cardiovascular risk factors: the effects of ageing and smoking on the immune system, an observational clinical study
Currently immunomodulatory compounds are under investigation for use in patients with cardiovascular disease, caused by atherosclerosis. These trials, using recurrent cardiovascular events as endpoint, require enrollment of large patient groups. We investigated the effect of key risk factors for atherosclerosis development, ageing and smoking, on the immune system, with the objective to identify biomarkers differentiating between human populations, and potentially serving as endpoints for future phase 1B trials with immunomodulatory compounds. Blood was collected from young healthy volunteers (aged 18-25 years, n=30), young smokers (18-25 years, n=20), elderly healthy volunteers (>60 years, n=20), heavy smokers (>45 years, 15 packyears, n=11) and patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) (>60 years, n=27). Circulating immune cell subsets were characterized by flow cytometry, and collected plasma was evaluated by proteomics (Olink). Clear ageing effects were observed, mostly illustrated by a lower level in CD8+ and naĂŻve CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, with an increase in CD4+ and CD8+ effector memory T cells in elderly healthy volunteers compared to young healthy volunteers. Heavy smokers showed a more inflammatory cellular phenotype, especially a shift in Th1/Th2 ratio: higher Th1 and lower Th2 percentages compared to young healthy volunteers. A significant decrease in circulating atheroprotective oxLDL-specific IgM was found in patients with CAD compared to young healthy volunteers. Elevated pro-inflammatory and chemotactic proteins TREM1 and CCL11 were observed in elderly volunteers compared to young volunteers. In addition, heavy smokers had an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and lysosomal protein LAMP3. These data show that ageing and smoking are associated with an inflammatory immunophenotype, and that heavy smokers or aged individuals may serve as potential populations for future clinical trials investigating immunomodulatory drugs targeted for cardiovascular disease.Biopharmaceutic
IFNÎł-stimulated B cells inhibit T follicular helper cells and protect against atherosclerosis
B and T cells are interconnected in the T follicular helper-germinal center B cell (TFH-GC B cell) axis, which is hyperactive during atherosclerosis development and loss of control along this axis results in exacerbated atherosclerosis. Inhibition of the TFH-GC B cell axis can be achieved by providing negative co-stimulation to TFH cells through the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway. Therefore, we investigated a novel therapeutic strategy using PD-L1-expressing B cells to inhibit atherosclerosis. We found that IFNÎł-stimulated B cells significantly enhanced PD-L1 expression and limited TFH cell development. To determine whether IFNÎł-B cells can reduce collar-induced atherosclerosis, apoE -/- mice fed a Western-type diet were treated with PBS, B cells or IFNÎł-B cells for a total of 5 weeks following collar placement. IFNÎł-B cells significantly increased PD-L1hi GC B cells and reduced plasmablasts. Interestingly, IFNÎł-B cells-treated mice show increased atheroprotective Tregs and T cell-derived IL-10. In line with these findings, we observed a significant reduction in total lesion volume in carotid arteries of IFNÎł-B cells-treated mice compared to PBS-treated mice and a similar trend was observed compared to B cell-treated mice. In conclusion, our data show that IFNÎł-stimulated B cells strongly upregulate PD-L1, inhibit TFH cell responses and protect against atherosclerosis.Biopharmaceutic
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
