    Aligning Manufacturing Strategies with Complexity Factors in the Aerospace Supply Chain

    Aerofirm is a large and vertically-integrated manufacturer providing strong and light materials mainly for commercial aerospace, but also for space, defense and industrial application. They face complexity from varying customer needs, a vast product range and a large network. Complexity at Aerofirm also arises from unsynchronized processes, this paper focuses on aligning the manufacturing strategy process. The approach proposed is to first calculate suitable strategy based on: forecast accuracy, volume variability, relative volume and supply chain depth. The results were then reviewed by key personnel to refine them based on qualitative knowledge, showing a mix of manufacturing strategies is essential

    The cultural value project cultural relations in ‘societies in transition’

    The Cultural Value Project (CVP) is a joint research project commissioned by the British Council and the Goethe-Institut (January 2017-June 2018). It aims to build a better understanding of the value of cultural relations (CR) in societies facing difficult challenges–in particular, in Egypt and Ukraine. The project seeks to identify the difference cultural relations activities make to important international challenges, including supporting stability and prosperity in societies going through substantial change. It aims to contribute to current political, policy and academic debates about the role of culture in conflict, diplomacy and development. The British Council and Goethe-Institut wish to collaborate on this research in order to gain a better understanding of how different forms of cultural relations work in different contexts, and explore wider possibilities for partnerships in the field of cultural relations. This initiative occurs at a time when challenging transnational issues of conflict, security, migration, poverty and environmental degradation, beyond the control of any nation-state, make cooperation in international relations more difficult but more important than ever

    Health for Wealth : Building a Healthier Northern Powerhouse for UK Productivity

    There is a well-known productivity gap between the Northern Powerhouse and the rest of England of £4 perperson-per-hour. There is also a substantial health gap between the Northern Powerhouse and the rest of England, with average life expectancy 2 years lower in the North. Given that both health and productivity are lower in the Northern Powerhouse, the NHSA commissioned this report from six of its eight university members (Newcastle, Manchester, Lancaster, Liverpool, Sheeld and York) to understand the impact of poor health on productivity and to explore the opportunities for improving UK productivity by unlocking inclusive, green, regional growth through health improvement. Our report shows the importance of health and the NHS for productivity in the Northern Powerhouse. So, as it develops its post-Brexit industrial strategy, central government should pay particular attention to the importance of improving health in the Northern Powerhouse as a route to increased wealth

    Comparative study of shell shape and muscle scar pigmentation in the closely related cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata, C-gigas and their reciprocal hybrids

    The taxonomic status of the cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas has received considerable attention in the last decades. Based on larval shell morphology, experimental hybridization, allozymes and nuclear DNA studies several authors have considered these two taxa as being synonymous. However, mitochondrial data showed clear genetic differences between the two taxa. In addition, microsatellite- based studies and cytogenetic studies have also provided evidence that supports their differentiation. Considerable differences have also been observed at the phenotypic level in terms of growth rate and ecophysiological parameters. In the present study, C. angulata from Sado estuary ( Portugal) and C. gigas from Seudre estuary ( France) were collected and factorial crosses were performed. Juveniles of the different progenies were reared in Ria Formosa ( Portugal) under common conditions to determine if they exhibited differences in shell shape and in pigmentation of the adductor muscle scar. Significant morphometric differences between C. angulata and C. gigas progenies were indicated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Univariate analysis of size- adjusted shell measurements revealed significant differences between the two taxa for shell depth, muscle scar height, and length of ligamental area. Both reciprocal hybrids showed intermediate morphometric characters between parental lines. In addition, significant differences were also observed between C. angulata and C. gigas progenies in terms of pigmentation of adductor muscle scar. C. angulata and both reciprocal hybrid progenies showed highly pigmented adductor muscle scars whereas in C. gigas progeny the pigmentation was lighter.     Expression of the Arabidopsis redox-related LEA protein, SAG21 is regulated by ERF, NAC and WRKY transcription factors

    SAG21/LEA5 is an unusual late embryogenesis abundant protein in Arabidopsis thaliana, that is primarily mitochondrially located and may be important in regulating translation in both chloroplasts and mitochondria. SAG21 expression is regulated by a plethora of abiotic and biotic stresses and plant growth regulators indicating a complex regulatory network. To identify key transcription factors regulating SAG21 expression, yeast-1-hybrid screens were used to identify transcription factors that bind the 1685 bp upstream of the SAG21 translational start site. Thirty-three transcription factors from nine different families bound to the SAG21 promoter, including members of the ERF, WRKY and NAC families. Key binding sites for both NAC and WRKY transcription factors were tested through site directed mutagenesis indicating the presence of cryptic binding sites for both these transcription factor families. Co-expression in protoplasts confirmed the activation of SAG21 by WRKY63/ABO3, and SAG21 upregulation elicited by oligogalacturonide elicitors was partially dependent on WRKY63, indicating its role in SAG21 pathogen responses. SAG21 upregulation by ethylene was abolished in the erf1 mutant, while wound-induced SAG21 expression was abolished in anac71 mutants, indicating SAG21 expression can be regulated by several distinct transcription factors depending on the stress condition
