Empty nose syndrome : case report

    Get PDF
Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) is a term first introduced by Kern and Moore which is used to describe a rare spectrum of various symptoms suffered by patients who had had previous radical turbinate surgery with a CT scan appearance of the paranasal sinuses after gross tissue loss. The most common symptom is so- called ‘‘paradoxical’’ nasal obstruction, reported by the patient despite objectively permeable cavities on clinical examination with no obstacle found on imaging or rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry.1 In most cases, the inferior turbinate (IT) has been resected radically even though middle turbinate (MT) resection has also been implicated.2 Incidence is unknown, as there have been no specific studies published. The estimated rate of ENS following inferior turbinate resection is 20%, which induces simple dry nose.peer-reviewe

Granuloma annulare induced by scabies infection has been described previously in three patients. In this report, we share our observation of a fourth case

Josef Jadassohn (1863–1936), Felix Lewandowsky (1879–1921), and their syndrome

Josef Jadassohn (1863–1936) and his assistant, Felix Lewandowsky (1879–1921), were eminent German dermatologists who had several dermatology conditions linked eponymously. One such condition is Jadassohn–Lewandowsky syndrome, which is a type of pachyonychia congenita – a disease that is characterized by severe thickening of the nail due to massive nail hyperkeratosis. This report describes Jadassohn–Lewandowsky syndrome and the men behind this disease

A dualized Kaczmarz algorithm in Hilbert and Banach space

    Get PDF
The Kaczmarz algorithm is a versatile and computationally efficient method of reconstructing vectors in a Hilbert space using inner products against a sequence {e_n}. If the algorithm successfully reconstructs any vector in the space, we say that {en} is an effective sequence. Kwapien and Mycielski provide a twofold criterion for sequences to be effective. Expanding on these results, Haller and Szwarc present an extensive list of conditions equivalent to {e_n} being effective. Within the context of a Hilbert space, we develop a dualized version of the Kaczmarz algorithm which is naturally suited for extension to a Banach space. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for one part of the Kwapien-Mycielski criterion to be weakly satisfied, ensuring the dense weak convergence of the dualized algorithm in both Banach and Hilbert space. Furthermore, we show that the equivalences of Haller and Szwarc fail in the dualized context, instead separating into two sets of equivalent conditions. We conclude with a presentation of convergence conditions for periodic sequences in a finite-dimensional Banach space

    ISO roadmap for software products

    Get PDF
The complex nature of ISO 9001 standards has been an obvious limitation for implementation. ISO 9001 accreditation provides external and internal advantages. The external benefits include increased market access and customer confidence. The internal advantages include quality improvements in both the product and process. However, this research demonstrates that the current ISO guideline for software products has not completely fulfilled the expectations in its implementation within the software organisation. Numerous companies are experiencing difficulties with ISO implementation and maintenance. Based on the analysis provided by this research, poor communication and an unsystematic approach were identified as the main current problems associated with ISO implementation. In addition, it also shows that the organisations often underestimate internal organisation factors, such as resistance to change. The existing difficulties in maintaining applied quality systems have resulted in a lack of control and monitoring. This thesis introduces an ISO Roadmap and corresponding Checklist for software products. The main goal of this ISO Roadmap is to provide enhanced transparency and assistance in the application of ISO 90003:2004 in order to make ISO implementation more manageable, visible and understandable for all people involved within the organisation. The result of this research provides the software industry with an initial step towards better systematisation and control for ISO implementations. This should help the software industry to better navigate through the ‘ISO jungle’ and facilitate an improved approach for implementation and maintenance activities. This research relied heavily on the development of the literature review, ISO 90003 standards, and knowledge from interviewees ... [cont.]

Ethnic inclusion, education, durable assets and occupational opportunities

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of access to durable economic assets, education and occupational opportunities on political inclusion. The study uses aggregated cross sectional data from the DHS surveys and combines it with data from the EPR dataset to obtain measures of economic, social and political inequalities at the group level. The study assumes that the more economic deprivation would lead to reduced political inclusion, whereas increased share of access to education and modern occupations increase the likelihood of political inclusion. The main findings of the study suggest a negative relation between relative economic deprivation and moderns occupation (clerical…)on political inclusion, whereas a positive relation between education and political inclusion

Early outcome of Mainz Pouch2 urinary diversion

This was both a retrospective and prospective study of 19 patients who were  managed at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) with Mainz pouch 2 reconstruction  after cystectomy for bladder cancer. Complications encountered included woundinfection (4 patients), and wound dehiscence (2 patients). No case of urinary fistula was recorded. There was one death.  Generally, the early results of Mainz pouch 2 were excellent; all the patients were continent and there were no cases of  pyelonephritis or metabolic derangement. The upper tracts were preserved or improved in the 18 patients that survived. In  conclusion, Mainz pouch, like ureterosigmoidostomy has been well accepted in our society. Our results compare favourably with those reported from elsewhere.Key words: hfainz pouch 2, urinary diversion, and early results
