    Effects of ultrasonically activated irrigants with or without surfactant on smear layer removal after post space preparation

    The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different NaOCl and EDTA formulations with/without ultrasonic use on smear layer removal and root canal surface characteristics after post space preparation. Study design: After post space preparations, forty-six teeth were subjected to different post space irrigation regimes; G1, 17% EDTA; G2, 17% EDTA+Ultrasonic activation; G3, EDTA-T; G4, EDTA-T+Ultrasonic activation; G5, NaOCl; G6, NaOCl+Ultrasonic activation. Specimens were examined under scanning electron microscope and scored for debris and smear layer removal and dentinal tubule opening and statistically analyzed with Kruskal Wallis and Dunn's test. Significance value was set at p<0.05. Results: EDTA and EDTA-T groups showed significantly better efficiency than the other groups in the each parts of the samples in terms of smear layer removal (p<0.05). In terms of dentinal tubule opening, EDTA, EDTA+Ultrasonic and EDTA-T groups had significantly better efficacy than the other groups in the middle and coronal parts of the samples (p<0.05). Conclusions: Ultrasonic activation did not significantly improve the efficiency of the irrigants

    First Chromospheric Activity and Doppler Imaging Study of PW And Using a New Doppler Imaging Code: SpotDIPy

    Measuring coverage of dark spots on cool stars is important in understanding how stellar magnetic activity scales with the rotation rate and convection zone depth. In this respect, it is crucial to infer surface magnetic patterns on G and K stars, to reveal solar-like stellar dynamos in action. Molecular bands serve as invaluable indicators of cool spots on the surfaces of stars, as they play a crucial role in enabling accurate assessments of the extent of spot coverage across the stellar surface. Therefore, more reliable surface images can be obtained considering the inversion of atomic lines with molecular bands. In this context, we simultaneously carry out Doppler imaging (DI) using atomic lines as well as Titanium Oxide (TiO) band profiles of PW And (K2 V) and also investigate chromospheric activity indicators for the first time in the literature, using the high-resolution spectra. The surface spot distribution obtained from the inversion process represents both atomic line and TiO-band profiles quite accurately. The chromospheric emission is also correlated with photospheric spot coverage, except during a possible flare event during the observations. We detect frequent flare activity, using TESS photometry. We also introduce a new open-source, Python-based DI code SpotDIPy that allows performing surface reconstructions of single stars using the maximum entropy method. We test the code by comparing surface reconstruction simulations with the extensively used DoTS code. We show that the surface brightness distribution maps reconstructed via both codes using the same simulated data are consistent with each other.Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journa

    Assessment of the marginal microleakage of flowable composites in class V cavities prepared by Er:YAG laser and high-speed bur

    Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, Er:YAG lazer ya da yüksek hızlı döner aletler ile kavite hazırlığı yapılan ve üç farklı akışkan kompozit materyali kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen sınıf V restorasyonlarda kenar mikrosızıntılarının incelenmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu in-vitro çalışmada, toplam 33 adet üçüncü büyük azı dişlerinin bukkal ve lingual yüzeylerinde Er:YAG lazer ya da frez kullanılarak sınıf V kaviteler hazırlanan örnekler altı gruba (n=11) ayrıldı ve üretici firmanın talimatlarına uygun olarak üç farklı akışkan kompozit ile restore edildi. Grup 1: Lazer ile hazırlık (lh)+Estelite Flow Quick High flow (EF); Grup 2: lh+G-aenial Flo (GF); Grup 3: lp+Herculite XRV Ultra Akış (HF); Grup 4: Frez ile hazırlık (fh)+EF; Grup 5: fh+GF; Grup 6: fh+HF. Isısal çevrim uygulanmasının ardından örnekler %0,5 metilen mavisi solüsyonunda 24 saat süresince bekletildi. Boya penetrasyonu sonucu oluşan mikrosızıntı, stereomikroskop altında x40 büyütme ile incelendi. Verilerin analizinde Kruskal Wallis ve Mann-Whitney U testleri kullanıldı (p0.05). In terms of gingival and occlusal surfaces, no statistically significant difference in microleakage was observed among all groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Class V cavity preparations with high-speed bur and Er:YAG laser, and the use of different flowable composites did not influence the microleakage at the gingival or occlusal margins

    Metabolic Syndrome and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia/What Component of Metabolic Syndrome Is Related to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

    Objective:Our objective was to evaluate the association of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with each component of metabolic syndrome (MS), and determine which component plays the major risk for developing BPH.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional observational study was performed on 203 male patients aged over 50, who came to the internal medicine outpatient clinics just for a check-up with/without any known disease. Forty-three of them were healthy control patients and the rest had only 1 criterion of MS. They were searched for the presence of BPH.Results:BPH prevalence ranged between 45.5-65.6% in the subgroups, there was no statistically significant difference in the presence of BPH between these groups. There was a slight positive correlation between glucose level and prostate volume. Triglyceride levels were positively correlated with Qmax and negatively correlated with the grade of hypertrophy. There was also a slight positive correlation between systolic blood pressure and prostate volumes, grade of hypertrophy, and IPSS scores.Conclusion:BPH prevalence was not different between MS components. We concluded that none of the MS components increase the occurrence of BPH by itself but when those metabolic disorders come together and form a syndrome, the prevalence of BPH increases

    The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which emerged in 2019, cut the epoch that will make profound fluctuates in the history of the world in social, economic, and scientific fields. Urgent needs in public health have brought with them innovative approaches, including diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. To exceed the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, various scientific authorities in the world have procreated advances in real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) based diagnostic tests, rapid diagnostic kits, the development of vaccines for immunization, and the purposing pharmaceuticals for treatment. Diagnosis, treatment, and immunization approaches put for- ward by scientific communities are cross-fed from the accrued knowledge of multidisciplinary sciences in health biotechnology. So much so that the pandemic, urgently prioritized in the world, is not only viral infections but also has been the pulsion in the development of novel approaches in many fields such as diagnosis, treatment, translational medicine, virology, mi- crobiology, immunology, functional nano- and bio-materials, bioinformatics, molecular biol- ogy, genetics, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, and artificial intelligence technologies.     Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.
