Essa tendência era veiculada pelas publicações leigas ou religiosas portuguesas.Mário de Andrade consecrated his criticism about the composition of the painting on the ceiling of the Church of Carmo, Itu. He estimated it as unusual, popular and Brazilian. In his opinion, Padre Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo innovated because he ignored the academic rules. My propose is to reverse this point of view: on the contrary, it may be argued that the painting on the ceiling of the Church of Carmo in Itu represented a general tendency towards simplification and introduction of festoons. This tendency was vehiculated by religious and laic portuguese publications

Vemos representadas, nestas peças, as mazelas da sociedade brasileira, as relações patriarcais, a ilegalidade do tráfico negreiro e a omissão do Estado.

AbstractAimsCardiac glycosides have been extensively used in the treatment of congestive heart failure for more than 200years. Recently, cardenolides and bufadienolides were isolated from mammalian tissue and are considered as a new class of steroidal hormones. The aim of the present work was to characterize the interaction between the most clinical used cardiac glycoside digoxin and the cardiac glycosides known to exist endogenously, i.e., ouabain, marinobufagin and telocinobufagin, on human kidney Na+/K+-ATPase.Main methodsInhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase activity from crude membrane preparations of human kidney was performed using increasing concentrations of the drugs alone or mixtures of ouabain:digoxin, telocinobufagin:digoxin and marinobufagin:digoxin in a fixed ratio 1:4, 2:3 and 3:2, respectively. The colorimetric method of Fiske and Subbarow was used to measure the inorganic phosphate released.Key findingsAnalyses of inhibition curves showed that the experimental curves for all combinations were superimposed on the theoretical additive curves indicating that an additive effect occurs among distinct cardenolides and bufadienolides combinations on the human α1β1 Na+/K+-ATPase protomer.SignificanceConsidering the extensive use of digoxin in the treatment of heart failure and the recent findings that endogenous cardiac glycosides may have altered levels in many diseases, including heart failure, the demonstration of additive effect between cardiac glycosides can help in the understanding of recent clinical observations, including that lower than usual doses of cardiac glycosides are necessary for decreasing mortality in these patients

Tourism and events are not a recent phenomenon. What is new and important is the influence that events have on a destination’s image. Events stimulate the development of destinations, they are image-building instruments of a territory, they increase the visibility of destinations and they complement tourism promotion. In the portfolio of events as tourist products, we can highlight music festivals, including the Vodafone Festival of Paredes de Coura (with more than 100,000 attendees), which takes place in the town of Paredes de Coura in the tourist destination of Porto-North (Portugal). The main objective of this article is to determine whether the image of the festival positively affects the image of the tourist destination. For this purpose, a questionnaire has been randomly administered among 395 individuals attending the festival, in which a total of 24 items of the festival and destination image are evaluated. The profile of the festival is also analyzed

[Abstract] The widespread use of the Internet has changed consumer buying behavior, especially among tourists, considering the intangibility of the tourist product. Although globally the modern tourist is a consumer of the new online market, there is a lack of studies addressing the level of development of the hotel business in relation to online bookings by residents of tourist destinations. Furthermore, this article analyzes the factors that impact the use of e-commerce by these residents in the acquisition of tourist accommodation services. A conceptual model was adopted, using the constructs “social influence” and “price” of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2), also including “trust” and “perceived risk”. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 195 residents of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, Fisher’s exact test, and multiple linear regression. The results show that price and social influence are the most significant constructs associated with booking a hotel online, while trust does not influence the use of the Internet. As practical implications, the findings of this study provide important information for hotel managers, as they allow a better understanding of the profile of respondents who book online, as well as which factors influence online behaviors, contributing to increasing the knowledge of digital platforms in the consumer market and, consequently, the development of the hospitality sector

Published by BMJ.OBJECTIVES: Healthcare workers (HCWs) were the first to be prioritised for COVID-19 vaccination. This study aims to estimate the COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) against SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic infection among HCWs in Portuguese hospitals. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We analysed data from HCWs (all professional categories) from three central hospitals: one in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and two in the central region of mainland Portugal, between December 2020 and March 2022. VE against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection was estimated as one minus the confounder adjusted HRs by Cox models considering age group, sex, self-reported chronic disease and occupational exposure to patients diagnosed with COVID-19 as adjustment variables. RESULTS: During the 15 months of follow-up, the 3034 HCWs contributed a total of 3054 person-years at risk, and 581 SARS-CoV-2 events occurred. Most participants were already vaccinated with a booster dose (n=2653, 87%), some are vaccinated with only the primary scheme (n=369, 12.6%) and a few remained unvaccinated (n=12, 0.4%) at the end of the study period. VE against symptomatic infection was 63.6% (95% CI 22.6% to 82.9%) for HCWs vaccinated with two doses and 55.9% (95% CI -1.3% to 80.8%) for HCWs vaccinated with one booster dose. Point estimate VE was higher for individuals with two doses taken between 14 days and 98 days (VE=71.9%; 95% CI 32.3% to 88.3%). CONCLUSION: This cohort study found a high COVID-19 VE against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in Portuguese HCWs after vaccination with one booster dose, even after Omicron variant occurrence. The small sample size, the high vaccine coverage, the very low number of unvaccinated individuals and the few events observed during the study period contributed to the low precision of the estimates.publishersversionpublishe

Novel ultraviolet absorbers derived from cashew nut shell liquid: spectrophotometric, in silico and in vitro assays

    Get PDF
The cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) constituents were isolated by our group leading to four mixtures and seventeen pure compounds, which had chromophoric groups similar to organic ultraviolet (UV) absorbers. In addition, C15 and C8 CNSL-derivatives molecules were rationally planned as UV absorbers. Mixtures and isolated CNSL compounds were demonstrated to be non-phototoxic when evaluated in a phototoxicity assay using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Considering the absorption values on the UV range, 6 compounds showed appropriate SPF values regarding the spectrophotometric test. Additionally, in silico and in vitro evaluations were performed, showing non-oral bioavailability, as well as non-mutagenic, non-genotoxic and non-phototoxic properties for the tested compounds. These results contribute favorably to the aimed use of the compounds under analysis as novel organic UV absorbers that have as precursor the phenolic lipid component of CNSL, a waste product obtained as the by-product of cashew nut food processing
