Reflection before action: Students’ perceptions of selected aspects of the language teaching profession
The study explores trainee teachers’ opinions on selected aspects of the languageteaching profession. Reflecting on the reasons for becoming a teacher, on a language teacher’s professional qualities, and on the positive and negative aspects of the profession appears to be necessary at the starting point of professional training. A qualitative method was employed to collect the data. The students were asked to answer four survey questions pertaining to the issues mentioned above. Thirty-five undergraduate students completed the survey. Their answers were then analysed, which resulted in suggesting some procedures that could be implemented in the training programme. The findings revealed generally positive attitudes to the language teaching profession. However, some actions should be also taken to eliminate a few subjective theories that could negatively influence the students’ approach, such as the feeling of having power over learners, or controversial ways of dealing with discipline problems in the classroom. The study emphasised the role of reflection in the initial stages of teacher trainin
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation – A case report presenting diagnostic difficulties
We describe an 86-year-old woman with a history of hypertension who presented sudden disturbances of consciousness and left hemiparesis. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffused hyperintensive changes on T2-weighted images localized subcortically in the white matter of both cerebral hemispheres, corresponding to acute vasogenic edema, causing moderate mass effect. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome was initially diagnosed. After implementation of anti-edema intravenous steroid treatment and hypotensive therapy the symptoms began to retire, till the total regression. The successive hospitalizations took place two and eight months later due to the occurrence of seizures, motor deficits and the development of mild cognitive impairment. Brain MRI revealed progression of the white matter changes and diffused subcortical microhemorrhages. Each time pulse steroid therapy was implemented and the symptoms improved significantly after several days. Chronic oral steroid treatment resulted in the stabilization of neurological status. The long-term observation of clinical symptoms, remission after immunosuppressive therapy and white matter changes with subcortical microhemorrhages in brain MRI leaded to the diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation
Ocena stanu odżywienia pacjentów hemodializowanych
Introduction: The incidence of kidneydisease (CKD) increases with the aging of the world'spopulation. In Poland, itisabout 16%. The most commoncauses of CKD arediabetes and hypertension. Earlydiagnosis of thisdisease and implementation of actionsare of greatimportance.
Aim of the study: Evaluation of the nutritional status of hemodialysispatients.
Material and methods: The researchmethodused in thisworkis the method of diagnosticexamination and researchmethods. In thiswork, the surveytechnique and the use of a scalewereused as researchtechniques. Tools used in thiswork for Self-assessmentquestionnaire, subjectiveglobalassessment of nutritional status (SGA), NRS scale - Riskassessmentrelated to nutritional status.
Results: Results of a study of associationsbetweenmultiplenutritionalstatuses in hemodialysispatients.
Conclusions:
Nutritional status does not significantlydepend on sociodemographicvariables.
The nutritional status dependssignificantly on the appetite, quantity and size of eatenmeals. People whoseappetiteisverypoor and the number of mealsis small aresuspected of malnutritionormoderatemalnutrition. peoplewhoeat the rightamount of meals show a goodnutritional status
Nutritional status dependssignificantly on the fluidsyou drink. In the group of patientstaking less than 3 glasses a day, theyaresuspected of malnutritionormoderatemalnutrition. Ifpatientstakemorefluids, theirnutritional status isnormal.
The nutritional status dependssignificantly on the symptoms and severity of the disease. The occurrence of ailmentssuch as loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, anorexiamayresult in poornutritional status. Such a conclusioncan be drawnthanks to ourownresearch.
Nutritional status does not significantlydepend on the level of knowledgeaboutpropernutrition. It depends, however, on the observance of itsrules. People who do not follow the rules of propernutrition show abnormalorsuspectednutritional status. Dialysispatientswho report thattheysometimesfollow the rules show normalnutritional statusWstęp.
Cel pracy. Ocena stanu odżywienia pacjentów hemodializowanych.
Materiał i metody.
Isolation and characterization of acetylated derivative of recombinant insulin lispro produced in Escherichia coli
PURPOSE: Insulin lispro is a rapid-acting insulin analogue produced by recombinant DNA technology. As a biosynthetic drug, the protein undergoes strict monitoring aiming for detection and characterization of impurities. The goal of this study was to isolate and identify a derivative of insulin lispro formed during biosynthesis. METHODS: For this purpose, ion exchange chromatography in combination with endoproteinase Glu-C digestion, MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry and Edman sequencing were employed. RESULTS: Ion exchange chromatography analysis of related proteins in development batches of recombinant insulin lispro revealed the existence of unknown derivative in excess of the assumed limit. Its molecular mass was 42 Da higher than the theoretical mass of Lys(B31) insulin lispro—one of the expected process-related intermediates. Endoproteinase Glu-C cleavage enabled indication of the modified peptide. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) allowed to explore the location and type of the modification. The 42 amu shift was present in the mass of y-type ions, while b-type ions were in agreement with theoretical values. It suggested that the modification is present on B31 lysine. Further inquiry revealed the presence of two diagnostic ions for lysine acetylation at m/z 143.1 and 126.1. In addition, the peptide was isolated and sequenced by Edman degradation. Standards of phenylthiohydantoin derivatives of N-ε-acetyl-L-lysine and N-ε-trimethyl-L-lysine, not available commercially, were synthesized in the laboratory. The retention time of the modified residue confirmed its identity as N-ε-acetyl-L-lysine. CONCLUSIONS: The derivative of insulin lispro formed during biosynthesis of the drug was identified to be N-ε-acetyl-L-lysine (B31) insulin lispro
The Las Gościbia – land of cascades and waterfalls
The “Las Gościbia” includes the northern slopes of Babica Mt. (Beskid Makowski) in the catchment area of a mountain stream called Gościbia. It is located within the Magura Nappe in the Siary Zone (Outer Carpathians). In the deeply cut valleys there is exposed continuously profile of the flysch deposits of Eocene-Oligocene age (Pasierbiec Sandstone, Zembrzyce Shale, Wątkowa Sandstone). The special value of the “Las Gościbia” are cascades and waterfalls, which are numerous here in stream valleys. Their abundance, the heterogeneous nature and high aesthetic values determined a high educational and geotourist potential

Cold atoms in space: community workshop summary and proposed road-map
We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies.publishedVersio
