    In this visual essay, we discuss Dance in the City, a course that examines the multiple dimensions, contexts, and purposes of dance through an innovative pedagogy. Drawing upon our research and practice as dance and visual arts educators, we conceptualized our course and its learning experiences around a notion of dance literacy in which understanding and making dance/movement are complimentary acts that take place within a sociocultural context. Our vision was to develop a course that explored the broad context of dance to create a rare opportunity for students to engage with an otherwise largely ignored art form in higher education. From our speculative standpoint on dance pedagogy, we demonstrate how each student’s speculative trajectory in our course can lead to imagining and embodying futures and different ways of knowing about art, dance, and the world.Neste ensaio visual, discutimos a Dança na Cidade, um curso que examina as múltiplas dimensões, contextos e propósitos da dança através de uma pedagogia inovadora. Com base em nossa pesquisa e prática como educadores de dança e artes visuais, desenvolvemos nosso curso e suas experiências de aprendizagem em torno de uma noção de alfabetização em dança, na qual interpretar e criar dança / movimento são considerados atos complementares, que ocorrem dentro de um contexto sociocultural. Nossa visão era desenvolver um curso que explorasse o amplo contexto da dança para criar uma oportunidade rara para os alunos se engajarem com uma forma de arte que costuma ser amplamente ignorada no ensino superior.     The choreography of the classroom: performance and embodiment in teaching

    The body is central to all human interaction and is literally the instrument through which teachers communicate. The topic of embodiment has increasingly been addressed in the literature on Education and more broadly in the Social Sciences, however there are few accounts of what embodiment looks like in actual teaching; how it enhances communication of the curriculum, and shapes teachers’ relationships with the students. Using a multiple case study methodology, I examine the embodied teaching styles of two university professors to investigate the intrinsic complexities that arise in the practice of teaching. The literature on corporality often characterizes the body as a text to be "read" by scholars prioritizing a static approach to embodiment focused on issues of identity. Little has been offered on the physical dimension of embodiment focusing on the sensory experience of being a moving feeling human being. This study offers new perspectives on the performance of teaching through a choreographic framework that emphasizes the role of the body in performance, as well as adding new insights into the relationship between the design of a course, and how it is orchestrated in the live performance space of the classroom. Three distinctive yet interrelated themes emerged during this study: the embodied, the structural, and the relational. Each theme contributed to create the implicit curriculum of the class, and offers distinctive insights into the tacit dimension of communication that is both ubiquitous and difficult to articulate. The first set of findings relates to the ways teachers embody and communicate the curriculum, examining the common gestures, movement patterns, pacing, and energetic dynamics used to animate their lectures. To honor embodied ways of interacting and communicating, it was essential to develop a method that could analyze movement data. Skills and techniques to study movement from dance were used to explore the everyday movements of teachers and bring to the forefront the specific ways each communicated concepts with the body. Attention to the embodied highlighted the qualitative and sensory dimension of teaching. For instance, I was attuned to how each teacher reacted to the attitude and energy level of the students and adjusted their tone of voice, pace of the class, or entire lesson plan to engage students in learning. The second set of findings investigates the relationship between the structural design of a course and how teachers orchestrate the planned curriculum within the classroom. A choreographic frame broadens the scope of the study to examine the aesthetic dimensions of the classroom. For instance, how each teacher chooses to vary the pace, energy, and focus of the class to communicate concepts and ideas to the students, as well interweave multiple streams of information through their embodied communication, the content of the lectures, power point and visual illustrations, etc. In this chapter, the role of the teacher as a designer of the educational experience is explored in relation to how they make the curriculum come alive in the performative space of the classroom. The third set of findings draws explores the relational aspects of teaching and examines how each teacher conceptualized and enacted caring in the classroom. This section investigate the ever-present challenge teachers face; how to build a relationship of trust and understanding with students, while concurrently offering challenges that will encourage them to grow and flourish. This study address issues integral to teacher education including the relationship between the planned curriculum and the way it is implemented in the classroom, as well as the relational dynamic developed between teachers and students. The performing arts provide a framework for understanding artistry in teaching highlighting the convergence of the performative, the creative design and orchestration of curriculum, and the relational aspects of teaching to make vivid the rich sensory world of the tacit dimension and how it creates the ambience for learning

    Evaluating community coalitions for prevention of substance abuse: The case of project freedom

    In the United States alone, there are more than 2,000 community coalitions to address local concerns about abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. This article describes an evaluation system used to examine the process, outcome, and impact of coalitions for the prevention of substance abuse. The evaluation addresses five key questions: (a) Was the community mobilized to address substance abuse (Process)? (b) What changes in the community resulted from the coalition (Outcome)? (c) Is there a change in reported use of alcohol and other substances by youths (Outcome)? (d) Does the coalition have a community-level impact on substance abuse (Impact)? and (e) Is community-level impact related to changes facilitated by the coalition (Impact)? To address these and other questions, using eight core measurement instruments, the evaluation system collects 15 distinct measures. This evaluation system is illustrated with a multiyear study of Project Freedom, a substance abuse coalition in a large midwestern city

    Screening ethnically diverse human embryonic stem cells identifies a chromosome 20 minimal amplicon conferring growth advantage

    The International Stem Cell Initiative analyzed 125 human embryonic stem (ES) cell lines and 11 induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines, from 38 laboratories worldwide, for genetic changes occurring during culture. Most lines were analyzed at an early and late passage. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis revealed that they included representatives of most major ethnic groups. Most lines remained karyotypically normal, but there was a progressive tendency to acquire changes on prolonged culture, commonly affecting chromosomes 1, 12, 17 and 20. DNA methylation patterns changed haphazardly with no link to time in culture. Structural variants, determined from the SNP arrays, also appeared sporadically. No common variants related to culture were observed on chromosomes 1, 12 and 17, but a minimal amplicon in chromosome 20q11.21, including three genes expressed in human ES cells, ID1, BCL2L1 and HM13, occurred in >20% of the lines. Of these genes, BCL2L1 is a strong candidate for driving culture adaptation of ES cells

    Tephrochronology and its application: A review

    Tephrochronology (from tephra, Gk ‘ashes’) is a unique stratigraphic method for linking, dating, and synchronizing geological, palaeoenvironmental, or archaeological sequences or events. As well as utilising the Law of Superposition, tephrochronology in practise requires tephra deposits to be characterized (or ‘fingerprinted’) using physical properties evident in the field together with those obtained from laboratory analyses. Such analyses include mineralogical examination (petrography) or geochemical analysis of glass shards or crystals using an electron microprobe or other analytical tools including laser-ablation-based mass spectrometry or the ion microprobe. The palaeoenvironmental or archaeological context in which a tephra occurs may also be useful for correlational purposes. Tephrochronology provides greatest utility when a numerical age obtained for a tephra or cryptotephra is transferrable from one site to another using stratigraphy and by comparing and matching inherent compositional features of the deposits with a high degree of likelihood. Used this way, tephrochronology is an age-equivalent dating method that provides an exceptionally precise volcanic-event stratigraphy. Such age transfers are valid because the primary tephra deposits from an eruption essentially have the same short-lived age everywhere they occur, forming isochrons very soon after the eruption (normally within a year). As well as providing isochrons for palaeoenvironmental and archaeological reconstructions, tephras through their geochemical analysis allow insight into volcanic and magmatic processes, and provide a comprehensive record of explosive volcanism and recurrence rates in the Quaternary (or earlier) that can be used to establish time-space relationships of relevance to volcanic hazard analysis. The basis and application of tephrochronology as a central stratigraphic and geochronological tool for Quaternary studies are presented and discussed in this review. Topics covered include principles of tephrochronology, defining isochrons, tephra nomenclature, mapping and correlating tephras from proximal to distal locations at metre- through to sub-millimetre-scale, cryptotephras, mineralogical and geochemical fingerprinting methods, numerical and statistical correlation techniques, and developments and applications in dating including the use of flexible depositional age-modelling techniques based on Bayesian statistics. Along with reference to wide-ranging examples and the identification of important recent advances in tephrochronology, such as the development of new geoanalytical approaches that enable individual small glass shards to be analysed near-routinely for major, trace, and rare-earth elements, potential problems such as miscorrelation, erroneous-age transfer, and tephra reworking and taphonomy (especially relating to cryptotephras) are also examined. Some of the challenges for future tephrochronological studies include refining geochemical analytical methods further, improving understanding of cryptotephra distribution and preservation patterns, improving age modelling including via new or enhanced radiometric or incremental techniques and Bayesian-derived models, evaluating and quantifying uncertainty in tephrochronology to a greater degree than at present, constructing comprehensive regional databases, and integrating tephrochronology with spatially referenced environmental and archaeometric data into 3-D reconstructions using GIS and geostatistics

    Multiple novel prostate cancer susceptibility signals identified by fine-mapping of known risk loci among Europeans

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous common prostate cancer (PrCa) susceptibility loci. We have fine-mapped 64 GWAS regions known at the conclusion of the iCOGS study using large-scale genotyping and imputation in 25 723 PrCa cases and 26 274 controls of European ancestry. We detected evidence for multiple independent signals at 16 regions, 12 of which contained additional newly identified significant associations. A single signal comprising a spectrum of correlated variation was observed at 39 regions; 35 of which are now described by a novel more significantly associated lead SNP, while the originally reported variant remained as the lead SNP only in 4 regions. We also confirmed two association signals in Europeans that had been previously reported only in East-Asian GWAS. Based on statistical evidence and linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure, we have curated and narrowed down the list of the most likely candidate causal variants for each region. Functional annotation using data from ENCODE filtered for PrCa cell lines and eQTL analysis demonstrated significant enrichment for overlap with bio-features within this set. By incorporating the novel risk variants identified here alongside the refined data for existing association signals, we estimate that these loci now explain ∼38.9% of the familial relative risk of PrCa, an 8.9% improvement over the previously reported GWAS tag SNPs. This suggests that a significant fraction of the heritability of PrCa may have been hidden during the discovery phase of GWAS, in particular due to the presence of multiple independent signals within the same regio

    Genetic mechanisms of critical illness in COVID-19.

    Host-mediated lung inflammation is present1, and drives mortality2, in the critical illness caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Host genetic variants associated with critical illness may identify mechanistic targets for therapeutic development3. Here we report the results of the GenOMICC (Genetics Of Mortality In Critical Care) genome-wide association study in 2,244 critically ill patients with COVID-19 from 208 UK intensive care units. We have identified and replicated the following new genome-wide significant associations: on chromosome 12q24.13 (rs10735079, P = 1.65 × 10-8) in a gene cluster that encodes antiviral restriction enzyme activators (OAS1, OAS2 and OAS3); on chromosome 19p13.2 (rs74956615, P = 2.3 × 10-8) near the gene that encodes tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2); on chromosome 19p13.3 (rs2109069, P = 3.98 ×  10-12) within the gene that encodes dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP9); and on chromosome 21q22.1 (rs2236757, P = 4.99 × 10-8) in the interferon receptor gene IFNAR2. We identified potential targets for repurposing of licensed medications: using Mendelian randomization, we found evidence that low expression of IFNAR2, or high expression of TYK2, are associated with life-threatening disease; and transcriptome-wide association in lung tissue revealed that high expression of the monocyte-macrophage chemotactic receptor CCR2 is associated with severe COVID-19. Our results identify robust genetic signals relating to key host antiviral defence mechanisms and mediators of inflammatory organ damage in COVID-19. Both mechanisms may be amenable to targeted treatment with existing drugs. However, large-scale randomized clinical trials will be essential before any change to clinical practice

    Methyl methacrylate and respiratory sensitization: A Critical review

    Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a respiratory irritant and dermal sensitizer that has been associated with occupational asthma in a small number of case reports. Those reports have raised concern that it might be a respiratory sensitizer. To better understand that possibility, we reviewed the in silico, in chemico, in vitro, and in vivo toxicology literature, and also epidemiologic and occupational medicine reports related to the respiratory effects of MMA. Numerous in silico and in chemico studies indicate that MMA is unlikely to be a respiratory sensitizer. The few in vitro studies suggest that MMA has generally weak effects. In vivo studies have documented contact skin sensitization, nonspecific cytotoxicity, and weakly positive responses on local lymph node assay; guinea pig and mouse inhalation sensitization tests have not been performed. Cohort and cross-sectional worker studies reported irritation of eyes, nose, and upper respiratory tract associated with short-term peaks exposures, but little evidence for respiratory sensitization or asthma. Nineteen case reports described asthma, laryngitis, or hypersensitivity pneumonitis in MMA-exposed workers; however, exposures were either not well described or involved mixtures containing more reactive respiratory sensitizers and irritants.The weight of evidence, both experimental and observational, argues that MMA is not a respiratory sensitizer

    Dimethyl fumarate in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial

    Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) inhibits inflammasome-mediated inflammation and has been proposed as a treatment for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. This randomised, controlled, open-label platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), is assessing multiple treatments in patients hospitalised for COVID-19 (NCT04381936, ISRCTN50189673). In this assessment of DMF performed at 27 UK hospitals, adults were randomly allocated (1:1) to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus DMF. The primary outcome was clinical status on day 5 measured on a seven-point ordinal scale. Secondary outcomes were time to sustained improvement in clinical status, time to discharge, day 5 peripheral blood oxygenation, day 5 C-reactive protein, and improvement in day 10 clinical status. Between 2 March 2021 and 18 November 2021, 713 patients were enroled in the DMF evaluation, of whom 356 were randomly allocated to receive usual care plus DMF, and 357 to usual care alone. 95% of patients received corticosteroids as part of routine care. There was no evidence of a beneficial effect of DMF on clinical status at day 5 (common odds ratio of unfavourable outcome 1.12; 95% CI 0.86-1.47; p = 0.40). There was no significant effect of DMF on any secondary outcome
