    Scaling of soaring seabirds and its implication for the maximum size of flying pterosaurs

    The flight ability of animals is restricted by the scaling effects imposed by physical and physiological factors. In comparisons of the power available from muscle and the mechanical power required to fly, theoretical studies have predicted that the margin between the powers should decrease with body size and that flying animals have a maximum body size. However, predicting an absolute value of this upper limit has been difficult because wing morphology and flight styles vary among species. Albatrosses and petrels have long, narrow, aerodynamically efficient wings and are considered to be soaring birds. Here, using animal-borne accelerometers, we show that scaling analyses of wing-flapping frequencies in these seabirds indicate that the maximum size limit for soaring animals is a body mass of 41 kg and a wingspan of 5.1 m. Soaring seabirds were observed to have two modes of flapping frequencies: vigorous flapping during takeoff and sporadic flapping during cruising flight. In these species, high and low flapping frequencies were found to scale with body mass (_mass_ ^-0.30^ and _mass_ ^-0.18^) in a manner similar to the predictions from biomechanical flight models (_mass_ ^-1/3^ and _mass_ ^-1/6^). The scaling relationships predicted that animals larger than the limit will not be able to flap fast enough to stay aloft under unfavourable wind conditions. Our result therefore casts doubt on the flying ability of large, extinct pterosaurs. The largest extant soarer, the wandering albatross, weighs about 10 kg, which might be a pragmatic limit to maintain a safety margin for sustainable flight and to survive in a variable environment

    Concrete Security for Entity Recognition: The Jane Doe Protocol (Full Paper)

    Entity recognition does not ask whether the message is from some entity X, just whether a message is from the same entity as a previous message. This turns turns out to be very useful for low-end devices. Motivated by an attack against a protocol presented at SAC 2003, the current paper proposes a new protocol -- the ``Jane Doe Protocol\u27\u27 --, and provides a formal proof of its concrete security. The protocol neither employs asymmetric cryptography, nor a trusted third party, nor any key pre-distribution. It is suitable for light-weight cryptographic devices such as sensor network motes and RFID tags

    The retrospective analysis of Antarctic tracking data project

    The Retrospective Analysis of Antarctic Tracking Data (RAATD) is a Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research project led jointly by the Expert Groups on Birds and Marine Mammals and Antarctic Biodiversity Informatics, and endorsed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. RAATD consolidated tracking data for multiple species of Antarctic meso- and top-predators to identify Areas of Ecological Significance. These datasets and accompanying syntheses provide a greater understanding of fundamental ecosystem processes in the Southern Ocean, support modelling of predator distributions under future climate scenarios and create inputs that can be incorporated into decision making processes by management authorities. In this data paper, we present the compiled tracking data from research groups that have worked in the Antarctic since the 1990s. The data are publicly available through biodiversity.aq and the Ocean Biogeographic Information System. The archive includes tracking data from over 70 contributors across 12 national Antarctic programs, and includes data from 17 predator species, 4060 individual animals, and over 2.9 million observed locations

    Global assessment of marine plastic exposure risk for oceanic birds

    Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the world’s oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on wide-ranging species

    The Application of the Mordell-Weil Group to Cryptographic Systems

    This thesis examines the Mordell-Weil group for application in cryptography. This approach has recently been proposed by Gerhard Frey. The use of the Mordell-Weil group for discrete logarithm schemes is a variant of elliptic curve cryptosystems. We extended the original idea by Frey with the goal of a performance improvement. The arithmetic complexity using the Mordell-Weil group will be compared to ordinary elliptic curve cryptosystems. The main goals of this thesis are (1) to investigate the algorithmic complexity of Mordell-Weil cryptosystems relative to elliptic curve cryptosystems; (2) the appropriate selection of the group parameters for a successful adaptation to different platforms; (3) a C++ library which makes it possible to easily use this algebra for cryptographic systems based on groups; and (4) to obtain software performance measures for the new cryptosystem. Point multiplication, the crucial operation for elliptic curve cryptosystems, is more than 20% less complex in the Mordell-Weil group than in an ordinary elliptic curve while preserving the same level of security. We show how to further improve the system such that it is particularly suited to 32-bit and 16-bit hardware platforms. The speed-up of the Mordell-Weil group approach comes at the cost of a slightly larger bit-size that is needed to represent a curve point and a more costly curve generation

    Generalizations of the Karatsuba Algorithm for Efficient Implementations

    In this work we generalize the classical Karatsuba Algorithm (KA) for polynomial multiplication to (i) polynomials of arbitrary degree and (ii) recursive use. We determine exact complexity expressions for the KA and focus on how to use it with the least number of operations. We develop a rule for the optimum order of steps if the KA is used recursively. We show how the usage of dummy coe#cients may improve performance. Finally we provide detailed information on how to use the KA with least cost, and also provide tables that describe the best possible usage of the KA for polynomials up to a degree of 127. Our results are especially useful for e#cient implementations of cryptographic and coding schemes over fixed-size fields like GF (p )

    Cybersecurity Research Considerations for Heavy Vehicles

    The intent of this research is to investigate cybersecurity aspects of medium-duty/heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks (classes 1 to 8) and compare those aspects to passenger vehicles. Information collected had a significant bias towards HD vehicles (class 7/8), as opposed to MD vehicles. This was due to the discovery process yielding very limited data on MD vehicles (class 3 to 6). This directly correlates to the types of responses provided by industry experts and their cybersecurity concerns (mainly by heavy truck OEMs and suppliers). Much focus was centered around their higher electronic content products that typically occur on class 7/8 vehicle platforms. Often, stakeholder feedback indicated that MD trucks have similar vulnerabilities to either light-duty or heavy-duty trucks but not necessarily anything particularly unique to that segment. This generality likely originates from the similarities between MD truck architectures/designs and HD truck architectures. The objective is to develop a framework to understand common features and differences between passenger vehicle and heavy-duty vehicle cybersecurity in terms of lifecycle, threats and risks, electrical/electronic architectures, control applications, security countermeasures, and industry aspects. Considering recent public awareness of passenger vehicle cybersecurity vulnerabilities, NHTSA undertook this research to understand potential impacts in the heavy-truck vehicle domain. This task started with the investigation of heavy-vehicle cybersecurity practices by contrasting the passenger vehicle cybersecurity knowledge-base to that of heavy vehicles. The project next considered risks in a more generic manner, and identified possible mitigation mechanisms. The comparison framework developed in this document was leveraged to help indemnify the possible mitigation mechanisms.
