    Search for a light charged Higgs boson decaying to c-sbar in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV

    see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceA search for a light charged Higgs boson, originating from the decay of a top quark and subsequently decaying into a charm quark and a strange antiquark, is presented. The data used in the analysis correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse-femtobarns recorded in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed in the process t tbar to W+/- b H-/+ bbar, where the W boson decays to a lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino. The decays lead to a final state comprising an isolated lepton, at least four jets and large missing transverse energy. No significant deviation is observed in the data with respect to the standard model predictions, and model-independent upper limits are set on the branching fraction BF( t to H+ b ), ranging from 1.2 to 6.5% for a charged Higgs boson with mass between 90 and 160 GeV, under the assumption that BF( H+ to c sbar ) = 100%

    Transverse momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, and protons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The particles, identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker, are measured in the transverse momentum range of pT ∼ 0.1-1.7 GeV/c and rapidities /y/ < 1. The pT spectra and integrated yields are compared to previous results at smaller √s and to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators. The average pT increases with particle mass and charged particle multiplicity of the event. Comparisons with previous CMS results at √s = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV show that the average pT and the ratios of hadron yields feature very similar dependences on the particle multiplicity in the event, independently of the center-of-mass energy of the pp collision

    Search for CP violation in tt \overline{\textrm{t}} H and tH production in multilepton channels in proton-proton collisions at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    The charge-parity (CP) structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs (H) boson and the top quark is measured in a data sample enriched in the tt \overline{\textrm{t}} H and tH associated production, using 138 fb−1 of data collected in proton-proton collisions at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study targets events where the H boson decays via H → WW or H → ττ and the top quarks decay via t → Wb: the W bosons decay either leptonically or hadronically, and final states characterized by the presence of at least two leptons are studied. Machine learning techniques are applied to these final states to enhance the separation of CP -even from CP -odd scenarios. Two-dimensional confidence regions are set on κt and κ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } t, which are respectively defined as the CP -even and CP -odd top-Higgs Yukawa coupling modifiers. No significant fractional CP -odd contributions, parameterized by the quantity |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | are observed; the parameter is determined to be |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | = 0.59 with an interval of (0.24, 0.81) at 68% confidence level. The results are combined with previous results covering the H → ZZ and H → γγ decay modes, yielding two- and one-dimensional confidence regions on κt and κ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } t, while |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | is determined to be |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | = 0.28 with an interval of |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | < 0.55 at 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model CP -even prediction of |fCPHtt {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} | = 0

    The first study of the shapes of jets arising from bottom (b) quarks in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet shapes are studied using charged hadron constituents as a function of their radial distance from the jet axis. Lead-lead (PbPb) collision data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN=5.02TeV were recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 1.69nb−1. Compared to proton-proton collisions, a redistribution of the energy in b jets to larger distances from the jet axis is observed in PbPb collisions. This medium-induced redistribution is found to be substantially larger for b jets than for inclusive jets

    : We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H→AA, A→γγ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle A is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt[s]=13  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136  fb^{-1}. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→AA→4γ) of (0.9-3.3)×10^{-3} at 95% confidence level for masses of A in the range 0.1-1.2&nbsp;GeV

    International audienceA search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) produced with transverse momentum (pT) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark (cc¯) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s=13  TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb-1. Boosted H→cc¯ decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the Z→cc¯ decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high pT for the first time with a signal strength of 1.00-0.14+0.17(syst)±0.08(theo)±0.06(stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(H)B(H→cc¯) is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95% confidence level

    Search for a heavy vector resonance decaying to a Z boson and a Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

    : A search is presented for a heavy vector resonance decaying into a Z boson and the standard model Higgs boson, where the Z boson is identified through its leptonic decays to electrons, muons, or neutrinos, and the Higgs boson is identified through its hadronic decays. The search is performed in a Lorentz-boosted regime and is based on data collected from 2016 to 2018 at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1 . Upper limits are derived on the production of a narrow heavy resonance Z' , and a mass below 3.5 and 3.7 Te is excluded at 95% confidence level in models where the heavy vector boson couples predominantly to fermions and to bosons, respectively. These are the most stringent limits placed on the Heavy Vector Triplet Z' model to date. If the heavy vector boson couples exclusively to standard model bosons, upper limits on the product of the cross section and branching fraction are set between 23 and 0.3 fb for a Z' mass between 0.8 and 4.6 Te , respectively. This is the first limit set on a heavy vector boson coupling exclusively to standard model bosons in its production and decay
