Erectile dysfunction in adult men - a separate disease or a symptom of a systemic disease? Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common medical problems of adult male. This paper reflects an analysis of the causes of erectile dysfunction in 169 patients primary addressed to an andrologist doctor. It shows that erectile dysfunction in adult male in most cases is a first symptom of other diseases such as arterial hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, prostate adenoma, late secondary hypogonadism etc

    Second order nonlinear optical properties of poled films containing azobenzenes tailored with azulen-1-yl-pyridine

    Azo compounds, which are highly versatile molecules, have attracted a considerable attention both for their fundamental properties and for practical applications, especially in photonics. The conjugated azo-aromatic systems containing 4-(R-azulen-1-yl)-2,6-dimethyl-pyridine were investigated for their nonlinear optical properties. These molecules were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, and the obtained guest-host systems were processed into good optical quality thin film by spin coating technique. The dipolar moments of dissolved in PMMA molecules were oriented by applying a high DC electric field at a temperature close to the polymer glass transition temperature. The second - order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of poled films were studied by the optical second harmonic generation technique (SHG). The poling kinetics, studied by in situ SHG as well as the measured second-order NLO susceptibilities of poled films are reported and discussed

    Equivalent capacitance photodiode determination by an optical method

    The paper deals with a dynamic method for measuring the photodiode equivalent capacitance and its dependence on applied voltage. Based on an original and inexpensive mode-locking technique, the method uses computer evaluation of the measured response pulse shape for a certain value of the photodiode inverse bias voltage. By considering the emergent pulse shape as Gaussian and the photodiode as current generator, the authors evaluated the equivalent photodiode capacitance from the pulse shape on an oscilloscope screen

    Synthesis and properties of fluorescent 4′-azulenyl-functionalized 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridines

    4′-Azulenyl-substituted terpyridines were efficiently synthesized following the Kröhnke methodology via azulenylchalcone intermediates. These azulenyl-containing terpyridines showed fluorescent emission with a fluorescence quantum yield varying from 0.14, in the case of parent terpyridine, to 0.64 when methyl groups are grafted on the azulenyl seven-membered ring. According to the crystal structures and TDDFT calculations, different twisting of the aromatic constituents is responsible for the observed fluorescent behavior. The electrochemical profile contains one-electron oxidation/reduction steps, which can only be explained on the basis of the redox behavior of the azulene unit. The ability of the 4′-azulenyl 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine to bind poisoning metal cations was studied by UV–vis titrations using aqueous solutions of Hg(II) and Cd(II) chlorides as illustrative examples

    Pulsed Laser Fabrication of TiO<sub>2</sub> Buffer Layers for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

    We report on the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells with a TiO2 buffer layer between the transparent conductive oxide substrate and the mesoporous TiO2 film, in order to improve the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the device. The buffer layer was fabricated by pulsed laser deposition whereas the mesoporous film by the doctor blade method, using TiO2 paste obtained by the sol&#8211;gel technique. The buffer layer was deposited in either oxygen (10 Pa and 50 Pa) or argon (10 Pa and 50 Pa) onto transparent conducting oxide glass kept at room temperature. The cross-section scanning electron microscopy image showed differences in layer morphology and thickness, depending on the deposition conditions. Transmission electron microscopy studies of the TiO2 buffer layers indicated that films consisted of grains with typical diameters of 10 nm to 30 nm. We found that the photovoltaic conversion efficiencies, determined under standard air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5G) conditions, of the solar cells with a buffer layer are more than two times larger than those of the standard cells. The best performance was reached for buffer layers deposited at 10 Pa O2. We discuss the processes that take place in the device and emphasize the role of the brush-like buffer layer in the performance increase

    Thickness Influence on In Vitro Biocompatibility of Titanium Nitride Thin Films Synthesized by Pulsed Laser Deposition

    We report a study on the biocompatibility vs. thickness in the case of titanium nitride (TiN) films synthesized on 410 medical grade stainless steel substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The films were grown in a nitrogen atmosphere, and their in vitro cytotoxicity was assessed according to ISO 10993-5 [1]. Extensive physical-chemical analyses have been carried out on the deposited structures with various thicknesses in order to explain the differences in biological behavior: profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction and surface energy measurements. XPS revealed the presence of titanium oxynitride beside TiN in amounts that vary with the film thickness. The cytocompatibility of films seems to be influenced by their TiN surface content. The thinner films seem to be more suitable for medical applications, due to the combined high values of bonding strength and superior cytocompatibility
