Pseudoboehmite as a drug delivery system for acyclovir
Herpes simplex virus is among the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections. Acyclovir is a potent, selective inhibitor of herpes viruses and it is indicated for the treatment and management of recurrent cold sores on the lips and face, genital herpes, among other diseases. The problem of the oral bioavailability of acyclovir is limited because of the low permeability across the gastrointestinal membrane. The use of nanoparticles of pseudoboehmite as a drug delivery system in vitro assays is a promising approach to further the permeability of acyclovir release. Here we report the synthesis of high purity pseudoboehmite from aluminium nitrate and ammonium hydroxide containing nanoparticles, using the sol–gel method, as a drug delivery system to improve the systemic bioavailability of acyclovir. The presence of pseudoboehmite nanoparticles were verified by infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. In vivo tests were performed with Wistar rats to compare the release of acyclovir, with and without the addition of pseudoboehmite. The administration of acyclovir with the addition of pseudoboehmite increased the drug content by 4.6 times in the plasma of Wistar rats after 4 h administration. Cloaked Facebook pages: Exploring fake Islamist propaganda in social media
This research analyses cloaked Facebook pages that are created to spread political propaganda by cloaking a user profile and imitating the identity of a political opponent in order to spark hateful and aggressive reactions. This inquiry is pursued through a multi-sited online ethnographic case study of Danish Facebook pages disguised as radical Islamist pages, which provoked racist and anti-Muslim reactions as well as negative sentiments towards refugees and immigrants in Denmark in general. Drawing on Jessie Daniels’ critical insights into cloaked websites, this research furthermore analyses the epistemological, methodological and conceptual challenges of online propaganda. It enhances our understanding of disinformation and propaganda in an increasingly interactive social media environment and contributes to a critical inquiry into social media and subversive politics

This publication concerns studies, programmes and designs for the project Sustainable Social Economic and Environmental Revitalization in the historic core of Multan City in Pakistani Punjab developed by several Politecnico di Milano Departments and Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, an institution that cooperates with Politecnico di Milano in the research fields of architecture, engineering and industrial design. The activities are part of the Debt Swap Agreement signed in 2006 between the governments of Italy and Pakistan for development in the social sectors. Besides the extraordinarily valuable architecture of the Walled City of Multan and its dense and hard-working population, there is a physical and environmental condition that is extremely problematic and that may threaten the continuity of life in the historic part of a city, well known for being among the world's most ancient settlements. The social and cultural interest and the academic challenge of a new opportunity to deal with great traditions pushed the researchers to face the urgency and delicacy of a very complex theme. After the analysis, the surveys and the proposals, the Politecnico group completed the first operational phase reorganizing one of the main City Gate Place, building a new open pavilion and restoring a huge public building and the Gate. The last activity, planned and not yet implemented, refers to the Sarafa Bazaar Project, an integrated system for the urban arrangement through infrastructures systems as sewerage, public lighting and shading, new paving and conservation of historic building's facades
Gate-controlled Guiding of Electrons in Graphene
Ballistic semiconductor structures have allowed the realization of
optics-like phenomena in electronics, including magnetic focusing and lensing.
An extension that appears unique to graphene is to use both n and p carrier
types to create electronic analogs of optical devices having both positive and
negative indices of refraction. Here, we use gate-controlled density with both
p and n carrier types to demonstrate the analog of the fiber-optic guiding in
graphene. Two basic effects are investigated: (1) bipolar p-n junction guiding,
based on the principle of angle-selective transmission though the graphene p-n
interface, and (2) unipolar fiber-optic guiding, using total internal
reflection controlled by carrier density. Modulation of guiding efficiency
through gating is demonstrated and compared to numerical simulations, which
indicates that interface roughness limits guiding performance, with
few-nanometer effective roughness extracted. The development of p-n and
fiber-optic guiding in graphene may lead to electrically reconfigurable wiring

STM Spectroscopy of ultra-flat graphene on hexagonal boron nitride
Graphene has demonstrated great promise for future electronics technology as
well as fundamental physics applications because of its linear energy-momentum
dispersion relations which cross at the Dirac point. However, accessing the
physics of the low density region at the Dirac point has been difficult because
of the presence of disorder which leaves the graphene with local microscopic
electron and hole puddles, resulting in a finite density of carriers even at
the charge neutrality point. Efforts have been made to reduce the disorder by
suspending graphene, leading to fabrication challenges and delicate devices
which make local spectroscopic measurements difficult. Recently, it has been
shown that placing graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) yields improved
device performance. In this letter, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to
show that graphene conforms to hBN, as evidenced by the presence of Moire
patterns in the topographic images. However, contrary to recent predictions,
this conformation does not lead to a sizable band gap due to the misalignment
of the lattices. Moreover, local spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the
electron-hole charge fluctuations are reduced by two orders of magnitude as
compared to those on silicon oxide. This leads to charge fluctuations which are
as small as in suspended graphene, opening up Dirac point physics to more
diverse experiments than are possible on freestanding devices.Comment: Nature Materials advance online publication 13/02/201
Lack of efficacy of Doxil® in TNF-α-based isolated limb perfusion in sarcoma-bearing rats
textabstractHere we show that Doxil® has minimal antitumour activity in the isolated limb perfusion (ILP) setting and its activity was not enhanced by the addition of tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Doxil® accumulation in tumour tissue was low and also not augmented by TNF. In contrast, activity of free conventional doxorubicin was enhanced by TNF. We conclude that application of Doxil® in a TNF-based ILP is not a useful alternative to free conventional doxorubicin or melphalan
Cost-effectiveness of HBV and HCV screening strategies:a systematic review of existing modelling techniques
Introduction:
Studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of screening for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) are generally heterogeneous in terms of risk groups, settings, screening intervention, outcomes and the economic modelling framework. It is therefore difficult to compare cost-effectiveness results between studies. This systematic review aims to summarise and critically assess existing economic models for HBV and HCV in order to identify the main methodological differences in modelling approaches.
Methods:
A structured search strategy was developed and a systematic review carried out. A critical assessment of the decision-analytic models was carried out according to the guidelines and framework developed for assessment of decision-analytic models in Health Technology Assessment of health care interventions.
Results:
The overall approach to analysing the cost-effectiveness of screening strategies was found to be broadly consistent for HBV and HCV. However, modelling parameters and related structure differed between models, producing different results. More recent publications performed better against a performance matrix, evaluating model components and methodology.
Conclusion:
When assessing screening strategies for HBV and HCV infection, the focus should be on more recent studies, which applied the latest treatment regimes, test methods and had better and more complete data on which to base their models. In addition to parameter selection and associated assumptions, careful consideration of dynamic versus static modelling is recommended. Future research may want to focus on these methodological issues. In addition, the ability to evaluate screening strategies for multiple infectious diseases, (HCV and HIV at the same time) might prove important for decision makers
The clinical features of the piriformis syndrome: a systematic review
Piriformis syndrome, sciatica caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, has been described for over 70 years; yet, it remains controversial. The literature consists mainly of case series and narrative reviews. The objectives of the study were: first, to make the best use of existing evidence to estimate the frequencies of clinical features in patients reported to have PS; second, to identify future research questions. A systematic review was conducted of any study type that reported extractable data relevant to diagnosis. The search included all studies up to 1 March 2008 in four databases: AMED, CINAHL, Embase and Medline. Screening, data extraction and analysis were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 55 studies were included: 51 individual and 3 aggregated data studies, and 1 combined study. The most common features found were: buttock pain, external tenderness over the greater sciatic notch, aggravation of the pain through sitting and augmentation of the pain with manoeuvres that increase piriformis muscle tension. Future research could start with comparing the frequencies of these features in sciatica patients with and without disc herniation or spinal stenosis
Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at
