    A common framework and taxonomy for multicriteria scheduling problems with Interfering and competing Jobs: Multi-agent scheduling problems

    Most classical scheduling research assumes that the objectives sought are common to all jobs to be scheduled. However, many real-life applications can be modeled by considering different sets of jobs, each one with its own objective(s), and an increasing number of papers addressing these problems has appeared over the last few years. Since so far the area lacks a uni ed view, the studied problems have received different names (such as interfering jobs, multi-agent scheduling, mixed-criteria, etc), some authors do not seem to be aware of important contributions in related problems, and solution procedures are often developed without taking into account existing ones. Therefore, the topic is in need of a common framework that allows for a systematic recollection of existing contributions, as well as a clear de nition of the main research avenues. In this paper we review multicriteria scheduling problems involving two or more sets of jobs and propose an uni ed framework providing a common de nition, name and notation for these problems. Moreover, we systematically review and classify the existing contributions in terms of the complexity of the problems and the proposed solution procedures, discuss the main advances, and point out future research lines in the topic

    Heuristics for scheduling a two-stage hybrid flow shop with parallel batching machines: application at a hospital sterilisation plant

    The model of a two-stage hybrid (or flexible) flow shop, with sequence-independent uniform setup times, parallel batching machines and parallel batches has been analysed with the purpose of reducing the number of tardy jobs and the makespan in a sterilisation plant. Jobs are processed in parallel batches by multiple identical parallel machines. Manual operations preceding each of the two stages have been dealt with as machine setup with standardised times and are sequence-independent. A mixed-integer model is proposed. Two heuristics have been tested on real benchmark data from an existing sterilisation plant: constrained size of parallel batches and fixed time slots. Computation experiments performed on combinations of machines and operator numbers suggest balancing the two stages by assigning operators proportionally to the setup time requirements

The object of decision is the grouping of production orders (batching) and the sequencing of these order groups on one or more machines (scheduling). This problem is also known in the literature as "batch scheduling problem" and belongs to the class of combinatorial optimization problems due to the interdependencies between the batching and the scheduling decisions.     Hybrid Genetic Bees Algorithm applied to Single Machine Scheduling with Earliness and Tardiness Penalties

    This paper presents a hybrid Genetic-Bees Algorithm based optimised solution for the single machine scheduling problem. The enhancement of the Bees Algorithm (BA) is conducted using the Genetic Algorithm's (GA's) operators during the global search stage. The proposed enhancement aims to increase the global search capability of the BA gradually with new additions. Although the BA has very successful implementations on various type of optimisation problems, it has found that the algorithm suffers from weak global search ability which increases the computational complexities on NP-hard type optimisation problems e.g. combinatorial/permutational type optimisation problems. This weakness occurs due to using a simple global random search operation during the search process. To reinforce the global search process in the BA, the proposed enhancement is utilised to increase exploration capability by expanding the number of fittest solutions through the genetical variations of promising solutions. The hybridisation process is realised by including two strategies into the basic BA, named as â\u80\u9creinforced global searchâ\u80\u9d and â\u80\u9cjumping functionâ\u80\u9d strategies. The reinforced global search strategy is the first stage of the hybridisation process and contains the mutation operator of the GA. The second strategy, jumping function strategy, consists of four GA operators as single point crossover, multipoint crossover, mutation and randomisation. To demonstrate the strength of the proposed solution, several experiments were carried out on 280 well-known single machine benchmark instances, and the results are presented by comparing to other well-known heuristic algorithms. According to the experiments, the proposed enhancements provides better capability to basic BA to jump from local minima, and GBA performed better compared to BA in terms of convergence and the quality of results. The convergence time reduced about 60% with about 30% better results for highly constrained jobs

    Preemptive models of scheduling with controllable processing times and of scheduling with imprecise computation: A review of solution approaches

    This paper provides a review of recent results on scheduling with controllable processing times. The stress is on the methodological aspects that include parametric flow techniques and methods for solving mathematical programming problems with submodular constraints. We show that the use of these methodologies yields fast algorithms for solving problems on single machine or parallel machines, with either one or several objective functions. For a wide range of problems with controllable processing times we report algorithms with the running times which match those known for the corresponding problems with fixed processing times. As a by-product, we present the best possible algorithms for a number of problems on parallel machines that are traditionally studied within the body of research on scheduling with imprecise computation

    On the Fine-Grained Parameterized Complexity of Partial Scheduling to Minimize the Makespan

    We study a natural variant of scheduling that we call partial scheduling: In this variant an instance of a scheduling problem along with an integer k is given and one seeks an optimal schedule where not all, but only k jobs, have to be processed. Specifically, we aim to determine the fine-grained parameterized complexity of partial scheduling problems parameterized by k for all variants of scheduling problems that minimize the makespan and involve unit/arbitrary processing times, identical/unrelated parallel machines, release/due dates, and precedence constraints. That is, we investigate whether algorithms with runtimes of the type f(k)n^?(1) or n^?(f(k)) exist for a function f that is as small as possible. Our contribution is two-fold: First, we categorize each variant to be either in ?, NP-complete and fixed-parameter tractable by k, or ?[1]-hard parameterized by k. Second, for many interesting cases we further investigate the run time on a finer scale and obtain run times that are (almost) optimal assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. As one of our main technical contributions, we give an ?(8^k k(|V|+|E|)) time algorithm to solve instances of partial scheduling problems minimizing the makespan with unit length jobs, precedence constraints and release dates, where G = (V,E) is the graph with precedence constraints

    A note on optimization in deteriorating systems using scheduling problems with the aging effect and resource allocation models

    AbstractThis paper concerns scheduling problems with the aging effect and additional resource allocation. A measurable result of the aging phenomenon is that the time required to perform a job increases whereas the additional resource allocation allows one to decrease it. As an example of a deteriorating system that can be described and optimized by the application of the models and algorithms considered, we choose the pickling process, where cleaning of metal items decreases the efficiency of the pickling (cleaning) bath (i.e., one containing an active substance), whereas heating it up can improve the efficiency. In particular, we focus on the optimization problems for such systems and model them as single-machine scheduling problems with job processing times dependent on the fatigue of a machine and on the allocation of additional resources. The objectives considered are the minimization of time criteria (the maximum completion time and the maximum lateness) under a given resource consumption as well as the minimization of the resource consumption under given time criteria. The computational complexity of the problems is determined and solution properties are proved. On the basis of these, we construct optimal polynomial time algorithms for some cases of the problems considered

    Abstract: Resource-constrained project scheduling involves the scheduling of project activities subject to precedence and resource constraints in order to meet the objective(s) in the best possible way. The area covers a wide variety of problem types. The objective of this paper is to provide a survey of what we believe are important recent in the area . Our main focus will be on the recent progress made in and the encouraging computational experience gained with the use of optimal solution procedures for the basic resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) and important extensions. The RCPSP involves the scheduling of a project its duration subject to zero-lag finish-start precedence constraints of the PERT/CPM type and constant availability constraints on the required set of renewable resources. We discuss recent striking advances in dealing with this problem using a new depth-first branch-and-bound procedure, elaborating on the effective and efficient branching scheme, bounding calculations and dominance rules, and discuss the potential of using truncated branch-and-bound. We derive a set of conclusions from the research on optimal solution procedures for the basis RCPSP and subsequently illustrate how effective and efficient branching rules and several of the strong dominance and bounding arguments can be extended to a rich and realistic variety of related problems. The preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problem (PRCPSP) relaxes the nonpreemption condition of the RCPSP, thus allowing activities to be interrupted at integer points in time and resumed later without additional penalty cost. The generalized resource-constrained project scheduling (GRCPSP) extends the RCPSP to the case of precedence diagramming type of precedence constraints (minimal finish-start, start-start, start-finish, finish-finish precedence relations), activity ready times, deadlines and variable resource availability's. The resource-constrained project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations (RCPSP-GPR) allows for start-start, finish-start and finish-finish constraints with minimal and maximal time lags. The MAX-NPV problem aims at scheduling project activities in order to maximize the net present value of the project in the absence of resource constraints. The resource-constrained project scheduling problem with discounted cash flows (RCPSP-DC) aims at the same non-regular objective in the presence of resource constraints. The resource availability cost problem (RACP) aims at determining the cheapest resource availability amounts for which a feasible solution exists that does not violate the project deadline. In the discrete time/cost trade-off problem (DTCTP) the duration of an activity is a discrete, non-increasing function of the amount of a single nonrenewable resource committed to it. In the discrete time/resource trade-off problem (DTRTP) the duration of an activity is a discrete, non-increasing function of the amount of a single renewable resource. Each activity must then be scheduled in one of its possible execution modes. In addition to time/resource trade-offs, the multi-mode project scheduling problem (MRCPSP) allows for resource/resource trade-offs and constraints on renewable, nonrenewable and doubly-constrained resources.
