    Physically-based parameterization of spatially variable soil and vegetation using satellite multispectral data

    A stochastic-geometric landsurface reflectance model is formulated and tested for the parameterization of spatially variable vegetation and soil at subpixel scales using satellite multispectral images without ground truth. Landscapes are conceptualized as 3-D Lambertian reflecting surfaces consisting of plant canopies, represented by solid geometric figures, superposed on a flat soil background. A computer simulation program is developed to investigate image characteristics at various spatial aggregations representative of satellite observational scales, or pixels. The evolution of the shape and structure of the red-infrared space, or scattergram, of typical semivegetated scenes is investigated by sequentially introducing model variables into the simulation. The analytical moments of the total pixel reflectance, including the mean, variance, spatial covariance, and cross-spectral covariance, are derived in terms of the moments of the individual fractional cover and reflectance components. The moments are applied to the solution of the inverse problem: The estimation of subpixel landscape properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis, given only one multispectral image and limited assumptions on the structure of the landscape. The landsurface reflectance model and inversion technique are tested using actual aerial radiometric data collected over regularly spaced pecan trees, and using both aerial and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper data obtained over discontinuous, randomly spaced conifer canopies in a natural forested watershed. Different amounts of solar backscattered diffuse radiation are assumed and the sensitivity of the estimated landsurface parameters to those amounts is examined

    Vegetation height products between 60° S and 60° N from ICESat GLAS data.

    We present new coarse resolution (0.5� ×0.5�)vegetation height and vegetation-cover fraction data sets between 60� S and 60� N for use in climate models and ecological models. The data sets are derived from 2003–2009 measurements collected by the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), the only LiDAR instrument that provides close to global coverage. Initial vegetation height is calculated from GLAS data using a development of the model of Rosette et al. (2008) with further calibration on desert sites. Filters are developed to identify and eliminate spurious observations in the GLAS data, e.g. data that are affected by clouds, atmosphere and terrain and as such result in erroneous estimates of vegetation height or vegetation cover. Filtered GLAS vegetation height estimates are aggregated in histograms from 0 to 70m in 0.5m intervals for each 0.5�×0.5�. The GLAS vegetation height product is evaluated in four ways. Firstly, the Vegetation height data and data filters are evaluated using aircraft LiDAR measurements of the same for ten sites in the Americas, Europe, and Australia. Application of filters to the GLAS vegetation height estimates increases the correlation with aircraft data from r =0.33 to r =0.78, decreases the root-mean-square error by a factor 3 to about 6m (RMSE) or 4.5m (68% error distribution) and decreases the bias from 5.7m to −1.3 m. Secondly, the global aggregated GLAS vegetation height product is tested for sensitivity towards the choice of data quality filters; areas with frequent cloud cover and areas with steep terrain are the most sensitive to the choice of thresholds for the filters. The changes in height estimates by applying different filters are, for the main part, smaller than the overall uncertainty of 4.5–6m established from the site measurements. Thirdly, the GLAS global vegetation height product is compared with a global vegetation height product typically used in a climate model, a recent global tree height product, and a vegetation greenness product and is shown to produce realistic estimates of vegetation height. Finally, the GLAS bare soil cover fraction is compared globally with the MODIS bare soil fraction (r = 0.65) and with bare soil cover fraction estimates derived from AVHRR NDVI data (r =0.67); the GLAS treecover fraction is compared with the MODIS tree-cover fraction (r =0.79). The evaluation indicates that filters applied to the GLAS data are conservative and eliminate a large proportion of spurious data, while only in a minority of cases at the cost of removing reliable data as well. The new GLAS vegetation height product appears more realistic than previous data sets used in climate models and ecological models and hence should significantly improve simulations that involve the land surface

    Mapping fractional woody cover in an extensive semi-arid woodland area at different spatial grains with Sentinel-2 and very high-resolution data

    Woody canopy cover is an essential variable to characterize and monitor vegetation health, carbon accumulation and land–atmosphere exchange processes. Remote sensing-based global woody and forest cover maps are available, yet with varying qualities. In arid and semi-arid areas, existing global products often underestimate the presence of woody cover due to the sparse woody cover and bright soil background. Case studies on smaller regions have shown that a combination of collected field data and medium-to-high resolution free satellite data (e.g., Landsat / Sentinel-2) can provide woody cover estimates with practically-sufficient accuracies. However, most earlier studies focused on comparably small regions and relied on costly field data. Here, we present a fully remote sensing-based work-flow to derive woody cover estimates over an area covering more than 0.5 million km2. The work-flow is showcased over the Zagros Mountains, a semi-arid mountain range covering western Iran, the northeast of Iraq and some smaller fraction of southeast Turkey. We use the Google Earth Engine to create homogeneous Sentinel-2 mosaics of the region using data from several years. These data are combined with reference woody cover values derived by a semi-automatic procedure from Google® and Bing® very high resolution (VHR) imagery. Several random forest (RF) models at different spatial grains were trained and at each grain validated with iterative splits of the reference data into training and validation sets (100 repetitions). Best results (considering the trade-off between model performance and spatial detail) were obtained for the model with 40 m spatial grain which showed stable relationships between the VHR-derived reference data and the Sentinel-2 based estimates of woody cover density. The model resulted in median values of coefficient of determination (R2) and RMSE of 0.67 and 0.11, respectively. Our work-flow is potentially also applicable to other arid and semi-arid regions and can contribute to improve currently available global woody cover products, which often perform poorly in semi-arid and arid regions. Comparisons between our woody cover products with common global woody or forest-cover products indicate a clear superiority of our approach. In future studies, these results may be further improved by taking into account regional differences in the drivers of woody-cover patterns along the environmental gradient of the Zagros area

    An evaluation of Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis applied to Landsat 8 OLI images for mapping land cover in southern Africa\u27s Savanna.

    Mapping land cover in southern Africa’s savannas using traditional pixel based remote sensing techniques can be very challenging due to the heterogeneity of its vegetation structure and the spectral difficulty in separating similar land covers across various land uses. In order to overcome these complications, a Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) provides a potential remote sensing approach to quantify spectral variation in the physical environment at a subpixel level. The MESMA approach was applied in the study area of the Mayuni Conservancy, in Namibia. Results show that 32.3% of the study area is covered by photosynthetic vegetation (PV), 32.0% by non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), 25.2% by bare soil (B) and 10.6% by shade. Post-classification validation shows that MESMA presented a moderate performance in estimating the proportions of land cover types in the study area. However the validation process is limited to the available resources and carries great subjectivity. It is concluded that future research on the matter should include a more consistent investigation on the endmember selection methodology and expand the study area inside of the same ecosystem

    Incorporation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Point Cloud Products into Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration Models

    In recent years, the deployment of satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to production of enormous amounts of data and to novel data processing and analysis techniques for monitoring crop conditions. One overlooked data source amid these efforts, however, is incorporation of 3D information derived from multi-spectral imagery and photogrammetry algorithms into crop monitoring algorithms. Few studies and algorithms have taken advantage of 3D UAV information in monitoring and assessment of plant conditions. In this study, different aspects of UAV point cloud information for enhancing remote sensing evapotranspiration (ET) models, particularly the Two-Source Energy Balance Model (TSEB), over a commercial vineyard located in California are presented. Toward this end, an innovative algorithm called Vegetation Structural-Spectral Information eXtraction Algorithm (VSSIXA) has been developed. This algorithm is able to accurately estimate height, volume, surface area, and projected surface area of the plant canopy solely based on point cloud information. In addition to biomass information, it can add multi-spectral UAV information to point clouds and provide spectral-structural canopy properties. The biomass information is used to assess its relationship with in situ Leaf Area Index (LAI), which is a crucial input for ET models. In addition, instead of using nominal field values of plant parameters, spatial information of fractional cover, canopy height, and canopy width are input to the TSEB model. Therefore, the two main objectives for incorporating point cloud information into remote sensing ET models for this study are to (1) evaluate the possible improvement in the estimation of LAI and biomass parameters from point cloud information in order to create robust LAI maps at the model resolution and (2) assess the sensitivity of the TSEB model to using average/nominal values versus spatially-distributed canopy fractional cover, height, and width information derived from point cloud data. The proposed algorithm is tested on imagery from the Utah State University AggieAir sUAS Program as part of the ARS-USDA GRAPEX Project (Grape Remote sensing Atmospheric Profile and Evapotranspiration eXperiment) collected since 2014 over multiple vineyards located in California. The results indicate a robust relationship between in situ LAI measurements and estimated biomass parameters from the point cloud data, and improvement in the agreement between TSEB model output of ET with tower measurements when employing LAI and spatially-distributed canopy structure parameters derived from the point cloud data

    A Review of Current Methodologies for Regional Evapotranspiration Estimation from Remotely Sensed Data

    An overview of the commonly applied evapotranspiration (ET) models using remotely sensed data is given to provide insight into the estimation of ET on a regional scale from satellite data. Generally, these models vary greatly in inputs, main assumptions and accuracy of results, etc. Besides the generally used remotely sensed multi-spectral data from visible to thermal infrared bands, most remotely sensed ET models, from simplified equations models to the more complex physically based two-source energy balance models, must rely to a certain degree on ground-based auxiliary measurements in order to derive the turbulent heat fluxes on a regional scale. We discuss the main inputs, assumptions, theories, advantages and drawbacks of each model. Moreover, approaches to the extrapolation of instantaneous ET to the daily values are also briefly presented. In the final part, both associated problems and future trends regarding these remotely sensed ET models were analyzed to objectively show the limitations and promising aspects of the estimation of regional ET based on remotely sensed data and ground-based measurements

    Mapping Changes in Fractional Vegetation Cover on the Namib Gravel Plains with Satellite-Retrieved Land Surface Emissivity Data

    Monitoring changes in vegetation cover over time is crucial for understanding the spatial distribution of rainfall, as well as the dynamics of plants and animals in the Namib desert. Traditional vegetation indices have limitations in capturing changes in vegetation cover within water-limited ecosystems like the Namib gravel plains. Spectral emissivity derived from thermal infrared remote sensing has recently emerged as a promising tool for distinguishing between bare ground and non-green vegetation in arid environments. This study investigates the potential of satellite-derived emissivities for mapping changes in fractional vegetation cover across the Namib gravel plains. Analyzing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) band 29 (λ = 8.55 µm) emissivity time series from 2001 to 2021, our findings demonstrate the ability of both Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and emissivity to detect sudden vegetation growth on the gravel plains. Emissivity additionally allows monitoring the extent of desiccated grass over several years after a rainfall event. Our results support a relationship between the change in fractional vegetation cover, the amount of rainfall and emissivity change magnitude. Information from NDVI and emissivity therefore provide complementary information for assessing vegetation in arid environments
