    In-111 octreotide SPECT/CT in the early diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis: A case report

    Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. At present the best diagnostic imaging procedure to assess stage and activity of sarcoidosis is controversial. We report the case of a 50-year-old male admitted with a history of dyspnea and fatigue with past medical history negative for smoking, occupational and environmental risk factors. Physical examination, routine blood tests, and pulmonary function tests were normal except for hypercalciuria. A chest radiograph showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy. Single photon emission computed tomography and/or computed tomography (SPECT and/or CT) In-111 Octreotide (Octreoscan) scintigraphy confirmed morphologic involvement of bilateral hilar lymph nodes and a mediastinoscopy biopsy specimen provided diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis (stage 0). This clinical case shows the effectiveness of In-111 Octreotide SPECT and/or CT in the early diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis

    Zamboni e i suoi strumenti: le origini della collezione storica del Liceo Ginnasio "Scipione Maffei" di Verona

    Con decreto repubblicano, datato 18 dicembre 1804, veniva istituito in Verona un “Liceo Centrale” del “Circondario dell’Adige” e contemporaneamente si nominavano sette cattedre con relativi docenti. Tra quelle scientifiche vi erano gli “Elementi di geometria ed algebra, coll’introduzione al Calcolo Sublime applicato alla Meccanica e all’idraulica” del matematico Pietro Cassali e gli “Elementi di Fisica Generale e Sperimentale” dell’abate Giuseppe Zamboni. Il nuovo liceo si collocava nei locali dell’antico collegio gesuitico di S. Sebastiano dove era già attivo un secondo istituto comunale dotato, fin dal 1802, di un gabinetto di Fisica che già possedeva non meno di ottanta macchine fisiche. Quando, nel 1807, il Liceo si trasferì nell’ex convento domenicano di S. Anastasia, trasformandosi anche in uno dei tre Regi Licei-Convitti del Regno d’Italia, gli strumenti scientifici dell’istituto comunale vennero acquisiti dall’erigendo Liceo. Le lezioni iniziarono il 1 dicembre 1807 e, tra le materie di studio, la “Fisica generale e particolare” era insegnata al terzo e quarto anno. Queste, in sintesi, le origine del più antico Liceo d’Italia, il Liceo Ginnasio di Stato “Scipione Maffei” custode, oggi, di un gabinetto di fisica ricco di strumenti scientifici di rilevante interesse storico. Il nucleo strumentale più interessante è certamente quello più antico legato alla presenza, quale docente di fisica nel liceo dal 1805 al 1846, dell’Abate Giuseppe Zamboni. Nel Gabinetto sono conservati vari modelli originali delle Sue famose pile a secco (che in parte egli commercializzava) tra le quali una, tra le più antiche che si conoscano, racchiusa in una campana di vetro, tipo elettroscopio, datata 15 luglio 1812. La collezione presenta altri cimeli zamboniani di grande interesse: un bel pendolo elettrico o “elettromotore perpetuo” e due orologi elettrici a pendolo (incompleti) di cui uno firmato dall’orologiaio Giovanni Bianchi. Zamboni, nella costruzione dei suoi apparati, si avvalse anche delle qualità di due bravi meccanici: il macchinista del Regio Liceo, Carlo Streizig (anch’egli orologiaio) e Antonio Camerlengo, macchinista dell’Accademia di Agricoltura, Commercio ed Arti di Verona, istituzione quest’ultima della quale era socio lo stesso Zamboni

    The new scintillating fiber detector of E835 at Fermilab

    Abstract The scintillating fiber tracker for the measurement of the polar coordinate θ for experiment E835 at Fermilab has been upgraded, by adding two extra layers (240 fibers each), at R ≈9 cm from the beam axis. Photons from the fibers are detected by Visible Light Photon Counters (VLPCs). The high granularity, flexibility and fast response of the scintillating fibers, combined with the high quantum efficiency of the VLPCs, allow high rate capability, high efficiency, good tracking and time resolution. Signals from the outer two layers are used to provide θ information to the first-level trigger

    Indoor NO2 air pollution and lung function of professional cooks

    Studies ofcooking- generated NO2 effects are rare in occupational epidemiology. in the present study, we evaluated the lung function of professional cooks exposed to NO2 in hospital kitchens. We performed spirometry in 37 cooks working in four hospital kitchens and estimated the predicted FVC, FEV1 and FEF25-75, based on age, sex, race, weight, and height, according to Knudson standards. NO2 measurements were obtained for 4 consecutive days during 4 different periods at 20-day intervals in each kitchen. Measurements were performed inside and outside the kitchens, simultaneously using Palm diffusion tubes. A time/exposure indicator was defined as representative of the cumulative exposure of each cook. No statistically significant effect of NO2 exposure on FVC was found. Each year of work as a cook corresponded to a decrease in predicted FEV1 of 2.5% (P=0.046) for the group as a whole. When smoking status and asthma were included in the analysis the effect of time/exposure decreased about 10% and lost statistical significance. On predicted FEF25-75, a decrease of 3.5% (P=0.035) was observed for the same group and the inclusion of controllers for smoking status and asthma did not affect the effects of time/exposure on pulmonary function parameter.     Psychological treatments and psychotherapies in the neurorehabilitation of pain. Evidences and recommendations from the italian consensus conference on pain in neurorehabilitation

    BACKGROUND: It is increasingly recognized that treating pain is crucial for effective care within neurological rehabilitation in the setting of the neurological rehabilitation. The Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation was constituted with the purpose identifying best practices for us in this context. Along with drug therapies and physical interventions, psychological treatments have been proven to be some of the most valuable tools that can be used within a multidisciplinary approach for fostering a reduction in pain intensity. However, there is a need to elucidate what forms of psychotherapy could be effectively matched with the specific pathologies that are typically addressed by neurorehabilitation teams. OBJECTIVES: To extensively assess the available evidence which supports the use of psychological therapies for pain reduction in neurological diseases. METHODS: A systematic review of the studies evaluating the effect of psychotherapies on pain intensity in neurological disorders was performed through an electronic search using PUBMED, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Based on the level of evidence of the included studies, recommendations were outlined separately for the different conditions. RESULTS: The literature search yielded 2352 results and the final database included 400 articles. The overall strength of the recommendations was medium/low. The different forms of psychological interventions, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, cognitive or behavioral techniques, Mindfulness, hypnosis, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brief Interpersonal Therapy, virtual reality interventions, various forms of biofeedback and mirror therapy were found to be effective for pain reduction in pathologies such as musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Central Post-Stroke pain, Phantom Limb Pain, pain secondary to Spinal Cord Injury, multiple sclerosis and other debilitating syndromes, diabetic neuropathy, Medically Unexplained Symptoms, migraine and headache. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological interventions and psychotherapies are safe and effective treatments that can be used within an integrated approach for patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation for pain. The different interventions can be specifically selected depending on the disease being treated.     Measurement of Branching Fractions and Rate Asymmetries in the Rare Decays B -> K(*) l+ l-

    In a sample of 471 million BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider we study the rare decays B -> K(*) l+ l-, where l+ l- is either e+e- or mu+mu-. We report results on partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries in seven bins of di-lepton mass-squared. We further present CP and lepton-flavor asymmetries for di-lepton masses below and above the J/psi resonance. We find no evidence for CP or lepton-flavor violation. The partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and with results from other experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Phys.     Measurement of CP Asymmetries and Branching Fractions in Charmless Two-Body B-Meson Decays to Pions and Kaons

    We present improved measurements of CP-violation parameters in the decays B0π+πB^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^-, B0K+πB^0 \to K^+ \pi^-, and B0π0π0B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0, and of the branching fractions for B0π0π0B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0 and B0K0π0B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0. The results are obtained with the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, corresponding to 467±5467 \pm 5 million BBˉB\bar B pairs. We find the CP-violation parameter values and branching fractions Sπ+π=0.68±0.10±0.03,Cπ+π=0.25±0.08±0.02,AKπ+=0.107±0.0160.004+0.006,Cπ0π0=0.43±0.26±0.05,Br(B0π0π0)=(1.83±0.21±0.13)×106,Br(B0K0π0)=(10.1±0.6±0.4)×106, S_{\pi^+\pi^-} = -0.68 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.03, C_{\pi^+\pi^-} = -0.25 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02, A_{K^-\pi^+} = -0.107 \pm 0.016 ^{+0.006}_{-0.004}, C_{\pi^0\pi^0} = -0.43 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.05, Br(B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0) = (1.83 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-6}, Br(B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0) = (10.1 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}, where in each case, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe CP violation with a significance of 6.7 standard deviations for B0π+πB^0 \to\pi^+\pi^- and 6.1 standard deviations for B0K+πB^0 \to K^+ \pi^-, including systematic uncertainties. Constraints on the Unitarity Triangle angle α\alpha are determined from the isospin relations among the BππB \to \pi\pi rates and asymmetries. Considering only the solution preferred by the Standard Model, we find α\alpha to be in the range [71,109][71^\circ,109^\circ] at the 68% confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, 11 postscript figures, submitted to Phys.
