Vaccine hesitancy: characteristics of the refusal of childhood vaccination in a Peruvian population.
Understanding the determinants of vaccine hesitancy is paramount to reinstate confidence in immunizations. The objective of this investigation was to explore the characteristics of the vaccination decision-making process that may result in the refusal of childhood immunization in Peru, during February-June 2020. A descriptive, cross-sectional study involving telephone interviews was executed in Peru. The Parents Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) survey was used. A demographic analysis was done, followed by an unadjusted exploratory subgroup analysis. Out of 552 subjects, 9.8% were considered vaccine hesitant, 70.3% had purposively delayed vaccination, 88.4% thought fewer vaccines were better and 52.2% were concerned about vaccine safety. The level of hesitancy was inversely proportional to the level of education and the number of children at home. Mothers and subjects aged ≤29 years showed a greater level of vaccine hesitancy. This population displays a vaccine-hesitant conduct. Vaccine safety and the number of vaccines to administer are important determining factors. This behavior could be influenced by variables such as level of education, number of children at home, parental relationship, and age. These results help understand local vaccination behaviors. More studies are encouraged to confirm and validate these findings
Baryogenesis vs. proton stability in theories with extra dimensions
We propose a new scenario of baryogenesis in the context of theories with
large extra dimensions. The baryon number is almost conserved at zero
temperature by means of a localization mechanism recently analyzed by
Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz: leptons and quarks are located at two slightly
displaced positions in the extra space, and this naturally suppresses the
interactions which ``convert'' the latter in the former. We show that this is
expected to be no longer true when finite temperature effects are taken into
account. The whole scenario is first presented in its generality, without
referring to the bulk geometry or to the specific mechanism which may generate
the baryon asymmetry. As an example, we then focus on a baryogenesis model
reminiscent of GUT baryogenesis. The Sakharov out of equilibrium condition is
satisfied by assuming nonthermal production of the bosons that induce baryon
number violation.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur
Realistic construction of split fermion models
The Standard Model flavor structure can be explained in theories where the
fermions are localized on different points in a compact extra dimension. We
show that models with two bulk scalars compactified on an orbifold can produce
such separations in a natural way. We study the shapes and overlaps of the
fermion wave functions. We show that, generically, realistic models of Gaussian
overlaps are unnatural since they require very large Yukawa couplings between
the fermions and the bulk scalars. We give an example of a five dimensional two
scalar model that accounts naturally for the observed quark masses, mixing
angles and CP violation.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, typos corrected, discussion on the implications

Baryon number violation, baryogenesis and defects with extra dimensions
In generic models for grand unified theories(GUT), various types of baryon
number violating processes are expected when quarks and leptons propagate in
the background of GUT strings. On the other hand, in models with large extra
dimensions, the baryon number violation in the background of a string is not
trivial because it must depend on the mechanism of the proton stabilization. In
this paper we argue that cosmic strings in models with extra dimensions can
enhance the baryon number violation to a phenomenologically interesting level,
if the proton decay is suppressed by the mechanism of localized wavefunctions.
We also make some comments on baryogenesis mediated by cosmological defects. We
show at least two scenarios will be successful in this direction. One is the
scenario of leptogenesis where the required lepton number conversion is
mediated by cosmic strings, and the other is the baryogenesis from the decaying
cosmological domain wall. Both scenarios are new and have not been discussed in
the past.Comment: 20pages, latex2e, comments and references added, to appear in PR
Excluding Electroweak Baryogenesis in the MSSM
In the context of the MSSM the Light Stop Scenario (LSS) is the only region
of parameter space that allows for successful Electroweak Baryogenesis (EWBG).
This possibility is very phenomenologically attractive, since it allows for the
direct production of light stops and could be tested at the LHC. The ATLAS and
CMS experiments have recently supplied tantalizing hints for a Higgs boson with
a mass of ~ 125 GeV. This Higgs mass severely restricts the parameter space of
the LSS, and we discuss the specific predictions made for EWBG in the MSSM.
Combining data from all the available ATLAS and CMS Higgs searches reveals a
tension with the predictions of EWBG even at this early stage. This allows us
to exclude EWBG in the MSSM at greater than (90) 95% confidence level in the
(non-)decoupling limit, by examining correlations between different Higgs decay
channels. We also examine the exclusion without the assumption of a ~ 125 GeV
Higgs. The Higgs searches are still highly constraining, excluding the entire
EWBG parameter space at greater than 90% CL except for a small window of m_h ~
117 - 119 GeV.Comment: 24 Pages, 4 Figures (v3: fixed typos, minor corrections, added

Experimental Probes of Localized Gravity: On and Off the Wall
The phenomenology of the Randall-Sundrum model of localized gravity is
analyzed in detail for the two scenarios where the Standard Model (SM) gauge
and matter fields are either confined to a TeV scale 3-brane or may propagate
in a slice of five dimensional anti-deSitter space. In the latter instance, we
derive the interactions of the graviton, gauge, and fermion Kaluza-Klein (KK)
states. The resulting phenomenological signatures are shown to be highly
dependent on the value of the 5-dimensional fermion mass and differ
substantially from the case where the SM fields lie on the TeV-brane. In both
scenarios, we examine the collider signatures for direct production of the
graviton and gauge KK towers as well as their induced contributions to
precision electroweak observables. These direct and indirect signatures are
found to play a complementary role in the exploration of the model parameter
space. In the case where the SM field content resides on the TeV-brane, we show
that the LHC can probe the full parameter space and hence will either discover
or exclude this model if the scale of electroweak physics on the 3-brane is
less than 10 TeV. We also show that spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking
of the SM must take place on the TeV-brane.Comment: 62 pages, Latex, 22 figure
Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least
three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data
sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns
collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector
at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model
backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are
presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard
model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new
particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets
Measurement of the Z/gamma* + b-jet cross section in pp collisions at 7 TeV
The production of b jets in association with a Z/gamma* boson is studied
using proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy
of 7 TeV and recorded by the CMS detector. The inclusive cross section for
Z/gamma* + b-jet production is measured in a sample corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 2.2 inverse femtobarns. The Z/gamma* + b-jet cross
section with Z/gamma* to ll (where ll = ee or mu mu) for events with the
invariant mass 60 < M(ll) < 120 GeV, at least one b jet at the hadron level
with pT > 25 GeV and abs(eta) < 2.1, and a separation between the leptons and
the jets of Delta R > 0.5 is found to be 5.84 +/- 0.08 (stat.) +/- 0.72 (syst.)
+(0.25)/-(0.55) (theory) pb. The kinematic properties of the events are also
studied and found to be in agreement with the predictions made by the MadGraph
event generator with the parton shower and the hadronisation performed by
PYTHIA.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physic
