    From Manhatten to Manikarnika: a Study of the ‘Aghori' Cult and Its Influence on the Life of Allen Ginsberg

    My Paper entitled ‘From Manhatten to Manikarnika' traces down the history of Allen Ginsberg's stay in India. It aims to draw parallels between the Beat writers of the apocalyptic 60's in America and the revered ‘Aghori' sadhus in India. For an average American in the 60's, the East, especially India was a queer nation, it was this queerness that fascinated the Beats writers of the 1960's in America. The reverence and reception of nudity, the celebration of the body, the adoration of death, the consumption of hallucinatory drugs for spiritual connection; approval of everything bizarre and gory lured the west to turn to the ‘heathen' east for spiritual liberation from its constrained, materialistic society. The ‘aghoris' managed to impress the Beat writers of the west to such an extent that Ginsberg ended up himself being a ‘yogi' after his visit to India. Apart from Hinduism, in general, the one aspect that I wish to talk about and study in detail is the influence of the higher philosophy on the mindset of Allen Ginsberg

    Exploring the Relationship between Sharing Economy, Socially Responsible Consumption and Materialism - A Conceptual Paper

    Modern Cultures constantly place emphasis on consumption processes. As consumption becomes more important, the notion of consumer accountability for the current difficulties becomes more pertinent. The catastrophic extinction of animal species and ongoing greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to our unsustainable consumption of natural resources, and a result of our over exploitation of the environment, particularly in more developed nations. Among other negative effects, unsustainable consumption causes habitat loss, biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. In the past decade, a disruptive phenomenon called “Sharing Economy” has evolved as a phenomenon that is extensively being discussed in order to encourage more sustainable consumption behaviours, such as access over ownership. This study discusses the idea of responsible consumption behaviours by participating in the sharing economy. The aspect of materialism is also discussed in this paper with respect to sharing as sharing and materialism appear to be mutually exclusive. Thus, this conceptual research explores the relationships between socially responsible consumption, sharing economy & materialism. This paper concludes that sharing economy has the potential to lead to responsible consumption, only if negative threat posed by traditional materialistic consumption is addressed in a positive manner

    Stage specific consumption and utilization of aphids, conspecific and heterospecific eggs by two species of Coccinella (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

    Abstract. The nutritive quality of aphids, conspecific and heterospecific eggs as food for ladybirds is a controversial issue. If ladybirds find aphids more palatable than eggs then they are more likely to efficiently exploit and be biocontrol agents of aphids. If eggs of conspecific or heterospecific ladybirds are more palatable than aphids these biocontrol agents may either impede aphid pest suppression or become a threat to other species of ladybirds. Thus, prior to formulating predatory guilds of ladybirds the nutritive quality of their eggs compared to that of the target aphid needs to be determined. In this regards, the present study evaluates the nutritive quality of an ad libitum supply of: (i) pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), (ii) conspecific eggs and (iii) heterospecific eggs as food for Coccinella septempunctata (L.) and Coccinella transversalis Fabricius (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), by determining the stage specific predation and developmental attributes of these two ladybirds reared on these diets. The conversion efficiencies and growth rates of young (first, second and third) larvae of both species of ladybirds were higher than those of fourth instar larvae and the consumption rates of fourth instar were higher than those of young larvae when fed on the three diets. When fed aphids the pre-imaginal development was faster, the consumption rates, conversion efficiencies and growth rates higher, adults bigger and mortality lower than when fed on conspecific eggs. The larvae of C. septempunctata consumed and completed their development when fed eggs of C. transversalis but the first instar larvae of C. transversalis did not consume the eggs of C. septempunctata and died of starvation. The dominance of C. septempunctata over C. transversalis in agricultural fields may be due to it consuming and utilizing aphids more efficiently and as a consequence growing faster and suffering a lower mortality along with its ability to consume and complete its development on eggs of C. transversalis. Thus, both these predators may not continue to coexist as predators of the pea aphid in agricultural fields since C. septempunctata may become a greater threat to C. transversalis in the future

    Feasibility of Sub-Axial Cervical Laminar Screws, Including C7, in the Indian Population: A Study on 50 Patients Using Computed Tomography-Based Morphometry Measurements

    Study Design Observational study of computed tomography (CT) data. Purpose We performed a CT-based radiographic analysis of sub-axial cervical lamina in the Indian population to assess the feasibility of laminar screws. Overview of Literature Morphometric studies have been performed for populations of various ethnic groups, but none exist for Indian populations. Methods Cervical spine CT scans of 50 adults with a minimum slice thickness of <2 mm (0.5–2 mm) were obtained from the database of a single center in northern India. Measurements (e.g., length, thickness, and height) were taken in millimeters along the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. Three measurements were made to assess laminar anatomy, namely, the translaminar/screw length, laminar thickness, and sagittal laminar height. Results The final sample comprised 500 laminae in 50 patients, resulting in 1,500 measurements. The mean translaminar lengths of the C3, C4, C5, C6, and C7 laminae were 19.48 mm, 19.60 mm, 19.61 mm, 20.49 mm, and 22.85 mm, respectively. The mean thicknesses of these cervical laminae were 3.12 mm, 2.62 mm, 2.56 mm, 3.47 mm, and 5.20 mm, respectively. The mean sagittal heights of these laminae were 9.38 mm, 9.80 mm, 10.12 mm, 11.31 mm, and 13.84 mm, respectively. Except for the C7 vertebrae, all other levels had a success rate of <10% in the Indian population using the criteria of a laminar height of at least 9 mm and thickness of 4.5 mm. Limited success was achieved at the C5, C6, and C3 levels. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the only series on the feasibility of laminar screws in the sub-axial cervical spine in the Indian population. We found that Indian patients have smaller anatomical dimensions and thus, are not suitable for laminar screws in the sub-axial cervical spine, barring C7, which is contrary to findings for populations in western and south Asian countries

    Chemokine-cytokine networks in the head and neck tumor microenvironment

    Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are aggressive diseases with a dismal patient prognosis. Despite significant advances in treatment modalities, the five-year survival rate in patients with HNSCC has improved marginally and therefore warrants a comprehensive understanding of the HNSCC biology. Alterations in the cellular and non-cellular components of the HNSCC tumor micro-environment (TME) play a critical role in regulating many hallmarks of cancer development including evasion of apoptosis, activation of invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, response to therapy, immune escape mechanisms, deregulation of energetics, and therefore the development of an overall aggressive HNSCC phenotype. Cytokines and chemokines are small secretory proteins produced by neoplastic or stromal cells, controlling complex and dynamic cell–cell interactions in the TME to regulate many cancer hallmarks.     Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Measurement of the W gamma Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV and Constraints on Effective Field Theory Coefficients

    A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Peer reviewe

    Performance of the CMS muon trigger system in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    The muon trigger system of the CMS experiment uses a combination of hardware and software to identify events containing a muon. During Run 2 (covering 2015-2018) the LHC achieved instantaneous luminosities as high as 2 × 10 cm s while delivering proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The challenge for the trigger system of the CMS experiment is to reduce the registered event rate from about 40 MHz to about 1 kHz. Significant improvements important for the success of the CMS physics program have been made to the muon trigger system via improved muon reconstruction and identification algorithms since the end of Run 1 and throughout the Run 2 data-taking period. The new algorithms maintain the acceptance of the muon triggers at the same or even lower rate throughout the data-taking period despite the increasing number of additional proton-proton interactions in each LHC bunch crossing. In this paper, the algorithms used in 2015 and 2016 and their improvements throughout 2017 and 2018 are described. Measurements of the CMS muon trigger performance for this data-taking period are presented, including efficiencies, transverse momentum resolution, trigger rates, and the purity of the selected muon sample. This paper focuses on the single- and double-muon triggers with the lowest sustainable transverse momentum thresholds used by CMS. The efficiency is measured in a transverse momentum range from 8 to several hundred GeV
