    Unitarity Corrections to the Proton Structure Functions through the Dipole Picture

    We study the dipole picture for the description of the deep inelastic scattering, focusing on the structure functions which are driven directly by the gluon distribution. One performs estimates using the effective dipole cross section given by the Glauber-Mueller approach in QCD, which encodes the corrections due to the unitarity effects associated with the saturation phenomenon.     SCC: A Service Centered Calculus

    We seek for a small set of primitives that might serve as a basis for formalising and programming service oriented applications over global computers. As an outcome of this study we introduce here SCC, a process calculus that features explicit notions of service definition, service invocation and session handling. Our proposal has been influenced by Orc, a programming model for structured orchestration of services, but the SCC’s session handling mechanism allows for the definition of structured interaction protocols, more complex than the basic request-response provided by Orc. We present syntax and operational semantics of SCC and a number of simple but nontrivial programming examples that demonstrate flexibility of the chosen set of primitives. A few encodings are also provided to relate our proposal with existing ones

    Intrathecal baclofen in cerebral palsy. A retrospective study of 25 wheelchair-assisted adults

    ObjectiveTo study the efficacy and safety of intrathecal baclofen therapy (ITB) in wheelchair-dependent adults with cerebral palsy. Patients and methods A retrospective analysis and clinical examination of 25 wheelchair-assisted adults with cerebral palsy receiving ITB initiated between 1999 and 2009 in three different cities in western France. Results ITB improves spasticity and facilitates wheelchair comfort and nursing care. The therapy has an effect on motor disorders and pain. Eighty percent of the ITB patients were satisfied. Dissatisfaction was related to complications or adverse events and not lack of efficacy. Complications occurred in 32% of the patients and transient interruption of the treatment or surgical removal of the ITB pump was necessary in 16% of cases. Discussion and conclusion Wider use of ITB in this indication is likely and should lead to a better understanding of the drug\u27s pharmacological effects on motor disorders and pain. Use of the Goal Attainment Assessment Scale or Caregiver Questionnaire can help us

    Parton Densities in a Nucleon

    In this paper we re-analyse the situation with the shadowing corrections (SC) in QCD for the proton deep inelastic structure functions. We reconsider the Glauber - Mueller approach for the SC in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and suggest a new nonlinear evolution equation. We argue that this equation solves the problem of the SC in the wide kinematic region where \as \kappa = \as \frac{3 \pi \as}{2 Q^2R^2} x G(x,Q^2) \leq 1. Using the new equation we estimate the value of the SC which turn out to be essential in the gluon deep inelastic structure function but rather small in F2(x,Q2)F_2(x,Q^2). We claim that the SC in xG(x,Q2)xG(x,Q^2) is so large that the BFKL Pomeron is hidden under the SC and cannot be seen even in such "hard" processes that have been proposed to test it. We found that the gluon density is proportional to ln(1/x)\ln(1/x) in the region of very small xx. This result means that the gluon density does not reach saturation in the region of applicability of the new evolution equation. It should be confronted with the solution of the GLR equation which leads to saturation.Comment: latex file 53 pages, 27 figures in eps file

    Quarkonium+γ\gamma production in coherent hadron - hadron interactions at LHC energies

    In this paper we study the H+γH + \gamma (H=J/ΨH = J/\Psi and Υ\Upsilon) production in coherent hadron - hadron interactions at LHC energies. Considering the ultrarelativistic protons as a source of photons, we estimate the γ+pH+γ+X\gamma + p \rightarrow H + \gamma + X cross section using the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism and considering different sets of values for the matrix elements. Our results for the total p+pp+H+γ+X p + p \rightarrow p + H + \gamma + X cross sections and rapidity distributions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 14 TeV demonstrate that the experimental analysis of the J/Ψ+γJ/\Psi + \gamma production at LHC is feasible.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     Froissart boundary for deep inelastic structure functions

    In this letter we derive the Froissart boundary in QCD for the deep inelastic structure function in low xx kinematic region. We show that the comparison of the Froissart boundary with the new HERA experimental data gives rise to a challenge for QCD to explain the matching between the deep inelastic scattering and real photoproduction process.Comment: 10 pages,7 figure

    Immediate antiviral therapy appears to restrict resting CD4 + cell HIV-1 infection without accelerating the decay of latent infection

    HIV type 1 (HIV-1) persists within resting CD4 + T cells despite anti-retroviral therapy (ART). To better understand the kinetics by which resting cell infection (RCI) is established, we developed a mathematical model that accurately predicts (r = 0.65, P = 2.5 × 10 -4) the initial frequency of RCI measured about 1 year postinfection, based on the time of ART initiation and the dynamic changes in viremia and CD4 + T cells. In the largest cohort of patients treated during acute seronegative HIV infection (AHI) in whom RCI has been stringently quantified, we found that early ART reduced the generation of latently infected cells. Although RCI declined after the first year of ART in most acutely infected patients, there was a striking absence of decline when initial RCI frequency was less than 0.5 per million. Notably, low-level viremia was observed more frequently as RCI increased. Together these observations suggest that (i) the degree of RCI is directly related to the availability of CD4 + T cells susceptible to HIV, whether viremia is controlled by the immune response and/or ART; and (ii) that two pools of infected resting CD4 + T cells exist, namely, less stable cells, observable in patients in whom viremia is not well controlled in early infection, and extremely stable cells that are established despite early ART. These findings reinforce and extend the concept that new approaches will be needed to eradicate HIV infection, and, in particular, highlight the need to target the extremely small but universal, long-lived latent reservoir

    Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events

    We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1} of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1} (syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let

    We present a measurement of the top quark pair (ttˉt\bar{t}) production cross section (σttˉ\sigma_{t\bar{t}}) in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s=1.96\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV using 230 pb1^{-1} of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the ttˉt\bar{t} purity of the selected sample.     Measurement of the ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet production cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/G* -> e+e- candidates corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 0.4 fb-1 collected using the D0 detector. Ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and hadronization.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, slightly modified, submitted to Phys.
