XUE. Molecular inventory in the inner region of an extremely irradiated Protoplanetary Disk
We present the first results of the eXtreme UV Environments (XUE) James Webb
Space Telescope (JWST) program, that focuses on the characterization of planet
forming disks in massive star forming regions. These regions are likely
representative of the environment in which most planetary systems formed.
Understanding the impact of environment on planet formation is critical in
order to gain insights into the diversity of the observed exoplanet
populations. XUE targets 15 disks in three areas of NGC 6357, which hosts
numerous massive OB stars, among which some of the most massive stars in our
Galaxy. Thanks to JWST we can, for the first time, study the effect of external
irradiation on the inner ( au), terrestrial-planet forming regions of
proto-planetary disks. In this study, we report on the detection of abundant
water, CO, CO, HCN and CH in the inner few au of XUE 1, a highly
irradiated disk in NGC 6357. In addition, small, partially crystalline silicate
dust is present at the disk surface. The derived column densities, the
oxygen-dominated gas-phase chemistry, and the presence of silicate dust are
surprisingly similar to those found in inner disks located in nearby,
relatively isolated low-mass star-forming regions. Our findings imply that the
inner regions of highly irradiated disks can retain similar physical and
chemical conditions as disks in low-mass star-forming regions, thus broadening
the range of environments with similar conditions for inner disk rocky planet
formation to the most extreme star-forming regions in our Galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 20 pages, 7 figure
Compressed representation of a partially defined integer function over multiple arguments
In OLAP (OnLine Analitical Processing) data are analysed in an n-dimensional cube. The cube may be represented as a partially defined function over n arguments. Considering that often the function is not defined everywhere, we ask: is there a known way of representing the function or the points in which it is defined, in a more compact manner than the trivial one
Impact of biological agents on postsurgical complications in inflammatory bowel disease: A multicentre study of Geteccu
Background: The impact of biologics on the risk of postoperative complications (PC) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is still an ongoing debate. This lack of evidence is more relevant for ustekinumab and vedolizumab. Aims: To evaluate the impact of biologics on the risk of PC. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 37 centres. Patients treated with biologics within 12 weeks before surgery were considered âexposedâ. The impact of the exposure on the risk of 30-day PC and the risk of infections was assessed by logistic regression and propensity score-matched analysis. Results: A total of 1535 surgeries were performed on 1370 patients. Of them, 711 surgeries were conducted in the exposed cohort (584 anti-TNF, 58 vedolizumab and 69 ustekinumab). In the multivariate analysis, male gender (OR: 1.5; 95% CI: 1.2â2.0), urgent surgery (OR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.2â2.2), laparotomy approach (OR: 1.5; 95% CI: 1.1â1.9) and severe anaemia (OR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.3â2.6) had higher risk of PC, while academic hospitals had significantly lower risk. Exposure to biologics (either anti-TNF, vedolizumab or ustekinumab) did not increase the risk of PC (OR: 1.2; 95% CI: 0.97â1.58), although it could be a risk factor for postoperative infections (OR 1.5; 95% CI: 1.03â2.27). Conclusions: Preoperative administration of biologics does not seem to be a risk factor for overall PC, although it may be so for postoperative infections
Incidence, clinical characteristics and management of inflammatory bowel disease in Spain: large-scale epidemiological study
(1) Aims: To assess the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Spain, to describe the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics at diagnosis and the evolution of the disease, and to explore the use of drug treatments. (2) Methods: Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBDâCrohnâs disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBD-U)âduring 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. (3) Results: We identified 3611 incident cases of IBD diagnosed during 2017 in 108 hospitals covering over 22 million inhabitants. The overall incidence (cases/100, 000 person-years) was 16 for IBD, 7.5 for CD, 8 for UC, and 0.5 for IBD-U; 53% of patients were male and median age was 43 years (interquartile range = 31â56 years). During a median 12-month follow-up, 34% of patients were treated with systemic steroids, 25% with immunomodulators, 15% with biologics and 5.6% underwent surgery. The percentage of patients under these treatments was significantly higher in CD than UC and IBD-U. Use of systemic steroids and biologics was significantly higher in hospitals with high resources. In total, 28% of patients were hospitalized (35% CD and 22% UC patients, p < 0.01). (4) Conclusion: The incidence of IBD in Spain is rather high and similar to that reported in Northern Europe. IBD patients require substantial therapeutic resources, which are greater in CD and in hospitals with high resources, and much higher than previously reported. One third of patients are hospitalized in the first year after diagnosis and a relevant proportion undergo surgery. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland
Search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in e+-e+-+ jets and e+-ÎŒ+-+ jets events in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 sâ=8 TeV
A search is performed for heavy Majorana neutrinos (N) decaying into a W boson and a lepton using the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A signature of two jets and either two same sign electrons or a same sign electron-muon pair is searched for using 19.7 fbâ1 of data collected during 2012 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with the expected standard model (SM) background and, in the context of a Type-1 seesaw mechanism, upper limits are set on the cross section times branching fraction for production of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the mass range between 40 and 500 GeV. The results are additionally interpreted as limits on the mixing between the heavy Majorana neutrinos and the SM neutrinos. In the mass range considered, the upper limits range between 0.00015â0.72 for |VeN|2 and 6.6 Ă 10â5â0.47 for |VeNVÎŒNâ|2/(|VeN|2â+â|VÎŒN|2), where VâN is the mixing element describing the mixing of the heavy neutrino with the SM neutrino of flavour â. These limits are the most restrictive direct limits for heavy Majorana neutrino masses above 200 GeV
