    Supermassive Black Holes with High Accretion Rates in Active Galactic Nuclei. V. A New Size-Luminosity Scaling Relation for the Broad-Line Region

    Full text link
    This paper reports results of the third-year campaign of monitoring super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) between 2014-2015. Ten new targets were selected from quasar sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which are generally more luminous than the SEAMBH candidates in last two years. Hβ\beta lags (τHβ\tau_{_{\rm H\beta}}) in five of the 10 quasars have been successfully measured in this monitoring season. We find that the lags are generally shorter, by large factors, than those of objects with same optical luminosity, in light of the well-known RHβL5100R_{_{\rm H\beta}}-L_{5100} relation. The five quasars have dimensionless accretion rates of M˙=10103\dot{\mathscr{M}}=10-10^3. Combining measurements of the previous SEAMBHs, we find that the reduction of Hβ\beta lags tightly depends on accretion rates, τHβ/τRLM˙0.42\tau_{_{\rm H\beta}}/\tau_{_{R-L}}\propto\dot{\mathscr{M}}^{-0.42}, where τRL\tau_{_{R-L}} is the Hβ\beta lag from the normal RHβL5100R_{_{\rm H\beta}}-L_{5100} relation. Fitting 63 mapped AGNs, we present a new scaling relation for the broad-line region: RHβ=α144β1min[1,(M˙/M˙c)γ1]R_{_{\rm H\beta}}=\alpha_1\ell_{44}^{\beta_1}\,\min\left[1,\left(\dot{\mathscr{M}}/\dot{\mathscr{M}}_c\right)^{-\gamma_1}\right], where 44=L5100/1044erg s1\ell_{44}=L_{5100}/10^{44}\,\rm erg~s^{-1} is 5100 \AA\ continuum luminosity, and coefficients of α1=(29.62.8+2.7)\alpha_1=(29.6_{-2.8}^{+2.7}) lt-d, β1=0.560.03+0.03\beta_1=0.56_{-0.03}^{+0.03}, γ1=0.520.16+0.33\gamma_1=0.52_{-0.16}^{+0.33} and M˙c=11.196.22+2.29\dot{\mathscr{M}}_c=11.19_{-6.22}^{+2.29}. This relation is applicable to AGNs over a wide range of accretion rates, from 10310^{-3} to 10310^3. Implications of this new relation are briefly discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 5 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Limits on Light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles from the First 102.8 kg ×{\times} day Data of the CDEX-10 Experiment

    Full text link
    We report the first results of a light weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search from the CDEX-10 experiment with a 10 kg germanium detector array immersed in liquid nitrogen at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a physics data size of 102.8 kg day. At an analysis threshold of 160 eVee, improved limits of 8 ×1042\times 10^{-42} and 3 ×1036\times 10^{-36} cm2^{2} at a 90\% confidence level on spin-independent and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections, respectively, at a WIMP mass (mχm_{\chi}) of 5 GeV/c2{c}^2 are achieved. The lower reach of mχm_{\chi} is extended to 2 GeV/c2{c}^2.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Limits on light WIMPs from the CDEX-1 experiment with a p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jingping Underground Laboratory

    Full text link
    We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    The time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0J/ψK+KB_s^0 \to J/\psi K^+K^- decays is measured using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.03.0fb1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 and 88TeV. In a sample of 96 000 Bs0J/ψK+KB_s^0 \to J/\psi K^+K^- decays, the CPCP-violating phase ϕs\phi_s is measured, as well as the decay widths ΓL\Gamma_{L} and ΓH\Gamma_{H} of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0Bˉs0B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0 system. The values obtained are ϕs=0.058±0.049±0.006\phi_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006 rad, Γs(ΓL+ΓH)/2=0.6603±0.0027±0.0015\Gamma_s \equiv (\Gamma_{L}+\Gamma_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015ps1^{-1}, andΔΓsΓLΓH=0.0805±0.0091±0.0032\Delta\Gamma_s \equiv \Gamma_{L} - \Gamma_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032ps1^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with Bs0J/ψπ+πB_s^{0} \to J/\psi \pi^+\pi^- decays gives ϕs=0.010±0.039\phi_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase ϕs\phi_s is measured independently for each polarisation state of the K+KK^+K^- system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.Comment: 6 figure

    Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 fb(-1) collected by LHCb in 2011, we report the first evidence of CP violation in the decays of B-s(0) mesons to K-+/-pi(-/+)pairs, A(CP)(B-s(0) -> K pi) = 0.27 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.02(syst), with a significance of 3.3 sigma. Furthermore, we report the most precise measurement of CP violation in the decays of B-0 mesons to K-+/-pi(-/+) pairs, A(CP)(B-0 -> K pi) = -0.088 +/- 0.011(stat) +/- 0.008(syst), with a significance exceeding 6 sigma. The branching fraction of the rare decay B 0 → K ∗0 e + e − in the dilepton mass region from 30 to 1000 MeV/c 2 has been measured by the LHCb experiment, using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1, at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The decay mode B 0 → J/ψ (e + e −)K ∗0 is utilized as a normalization channel. The branching fraction B(B0→K∗0e+e−) is measured to be B(B0→K∗0e+e−)30−1000MeV/c2 =(3.1+0.9−0.8+0.2−0.3±0.2)×10−7, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the uncertainties on the B 0 → J/ψ K ∗0 and J/ψ → e + e − branching fractions

    The Λˉ/Λ\bar{\Lambda} / \Lambda and Λˉ/KS0\bar{\Lambda} / K^0_\mathrm{S} production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from 0.3nb10.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1} of pppp collisions delivered by the LHC at s=0.9\sqrt{s} = 0.9\,TeV and 1.8nb11.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1} at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7\,TeV. Both ratios are presented as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_\mathrm{T}, and rapidity, yy, in the ranges {0.15<pT<2.50GeV/c0.15 < p_\mathrm{T} < 2.50\,\mathrm{GeV}/c} and {2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5}. Results at the two energies are in good agreement as a function of rapidity loss, Δy=ybeamy\Delta y = y_\mathrm{beam} - y, and are consistent with previous measurements. The ratio Λˉ/Λ\bar{\Lambda} / \Lambda, measuring the transport of baryon number from the collision into the detector, is smaller in data than predicted in simulation, particularly at high rapidity. The ratio Λˉ/KS0\bar{\Lambda} / K^0_\mathrm{S}, measuring the baryon-to-meson suppression in strange quark hadronisation, is significantly larger than expected.The Λˉ/Λ\bar{\Lambda} / \Lambda and Λˉ/KS0\bar{\Lambda} / K^0_\mathrm{S} production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from 0.3nb10.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1} of pppp collisions delivered by the LHC at s=0.9\sqrt{s} = 0.9\,TeV and 1.8nb11.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1} at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7\,TeV.     Measurement of prompt hadron production ratios in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 0.9\mbox{ and }7~\mathrm{TeV}

    The charged-particle production ratios p/p ¯ , K−/K+, π−/π+, (p+ ¯p)/(π+ +π−), (K+ +K−)/(π+ + π−) and (p + ¯p)/(K+ + K−) are measured with the LHCb detector using 0.3 nb−1 of pp collisions delivered by the LHC at √s = 0.9 TeV and 1.8 nb−1 at √s = 7 TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum pT and pseudorapidity η. The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio p/p ¯ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, y ≡ ybeam − y, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport

    Study of J/ψ production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at sNN \sqrt{{{s_{NN }}}} = 5 TeV

    The production of J/psi mesons with rapidity 1.5 < y < 4.0 or 5.0 < y < 2.5 and transverse momentum PT < 14 GeV/e is studied with the LHCb detector in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy, root(NN)-N-S = 5 TeV. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed using the dimuon decay mode. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.6 nb-1. For the first time the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined separately for prompt J/psi mesons and J/psi from b-hadron decays. Clear suppression of prompt J/psi production with respect to proton-proton collisions at large rapidity is observed, while the production of J/psi from b-hadron decays is less suppressed. These results show good agreement with available theoretical predictions. The measurement shows that cold nuclear matter effects are important for interpretations of the related quark-gluon plasma signatures in heavy-ion collisions
