    Accuracy of a teleported trapped field state inside a single bimodal cavity

    We propose a simplified scheme to teleport a superposition of coherent states from one mode to another of the same bimodal lossy cavity. Based on current experimental capabilities, we present a calculation of the fidelity that can be achieved, demonstrating accurate teleportation if the mean photon number of each mode is at most 1.5. Our scheme applies as well for teleportation of coherent states from one mode of a cavity to another mode of a second cavity, both cavities embedded in a common reservoir.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, in appreciation for publication in Physical Review

    ABORDAGEM DA PROBLEMÁTICA AMBIENTAL NO ENSINO DA CASA FAMILIAR RURAL DE URUARÁ, PARÁ

    Este trabalho de pesquisa foi realizado na Escola Comunitária Casa Familiar Rural de Uruará, com o objetivo de analisar a concepção dos estudantes formados por uma proposta de educação do campo, à respeito da problemática das questões ambientais enfrentadas nos últimos anos. O que se busca neste trabalho é analisar como a escola trabalha a problemática ambiental, tanto em seu plano de curso, quanto nas ações desenvolvidas nos projetos de final de curso dos estudantes. A metodologia está centrado na análise de dados referente às entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores e estudantes, e na análise documental. Os resultados mostraram que a problemática em torno do desenvolvimento sustentável é abordado pelo viés da prática nos sistemas produtivos, principalmente a preocupação com a diminuição do desmatamento, o uso intensivo de áreas menores com sistemas agroflorestais e criação de pequenos animais. No entanto, verifica-se as dificuldades para estabelecer o acompanhamento nos tempos- família e na formação do quadro de professores.   Palavras chaves: problemática ambiental; desenvolvimento sustentável; educação do campo.   Abstract   This research work was carried out at the Rural Family Home School of Uruará, with the objective of analyzing the conception of the students formed by a proposal of education of the field, regarding the problematic of environmental issues faced in recent years. What is sought in this work is to analyze how the school works the environmental problem, both in its course plan and in the actions developed in the students' final projects. The methodology is centered in the analysis of data referring to semistructured interviews with teachers and students, and in documentary analysis. The results showed that the problematic of sustainable development is addressed by the bias of the practice in the productive systems, mainly the concern with the reduction of deforestation, the intensive use of smaller areas with agroforestry systems and the creation of small animals. However, there are difficulties in establishing follow-up in family times and teacher training.   Keywords: environmental problem; sustainable development; field education

    Electroanalysis of Imidacloprid Insecticide in River Waters Using Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

    In this work, a functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE/MWCNT-f) was optimized for the direct determination of imidacloprid (IMC) insecticide in river water. The functionalized material was characterized by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and the modified electrode by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Results revealed that the GCE/MWCNT-f effectively increased the response toward IMC reduction by enhancing the reduction peak current and decreasing the peak potential in comparison with the bare electrode. After optimizing the electroanalytical conditions, the GCE/MWCNT-f showed a linear voltammetric response at concentration ranging from 2.40 × 10−7 to 3.50 × 10−6 mol L−1, with detection and quantification limits of 4.15 × 10−7 mol L−1 and 1.38 × 10−6 mol L−1, respectively. The recovery rate of IMC in spiked river water samples varied from 90–95%.     Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo realizado por estudantes ingressantes do curso de Física da Universidade Federal do Pará com o objetivo de se analisar os estados de estabilidade de um pêndulo cujo pivô está em movimento circular uniforme (MCU). O modelo teórico foi desenvolvido utilizando-se a descrição de Lagrange da Mecânica Clássica. Após a modelagem, comparou-se as previsões teóricas com um aparato experimental, afim de se observar os casos de estabilidade. O projeto foi desenvolvido em uma disciplina piloto que se utilizou de uma metodologia ativa, baseada na indagação, em particular com o uso de problemas em aberto, para desenvolver nos estudantes habilidades e competências ligadas ao processo investigativo em ciências exatas, contribuindo também indiretamente para o entendimento da natureza da ciências

    Deregulation of apoptosis-related genes is associated with PRV1 overexpression and JAK2 V617F allele burden in Essential Thrombocythemia and Myelofibrosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) and Primary Myelofibrosis (PMF) are Chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) characterized by clonal myeloproliferation/myeloaccumulation without cell maturation impairment. The JAK2 V617F mutation and <it>PRV1 </it>gene overexpression may contribute to MPN physiopathology. We hypothesized that deregulation of the apoptotic machinery may also play a role in the pathogenesis of ET and PMF. In this study we evaluated the apoptosis-related gene and protein expression of BCL2 family members in bone marrow CD34<sup>+ </sup>hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and peripheral blood leukocytes from ET and PMF patients. We also tested whether the gene expression results were correlated with JAK2 V617F allele burden percentage, <it>PRV1 </it>overexpression, and clinical and laboratory parameters.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By real time PCR assay, we observed that <it>A1, MCL1, BIK and BID</it>, as well as <it>A1, BCLW </it>and <it>BAK </it>gene expression were increased in ET and PMF CD34<sup>+ </sup>cells respectively, while pro-apoptotic <it>BAX </it>and anti-apoptotic <it>BCL2 </it>mRNA levels were found to be lower in ET and PMF CD34<sup>+ </sup>cells respectively, in relation to controls. In patients' leukocytes, we detected an upregulation of anti-apoptotic genes <it>A1, BCL2, BCL-X<sub>L </sub></it>and <it>BCLW</it>. In contrast, pro-apoptotic <it>BID </it>and <it>BIM<sub>EL </sub></it>expression were downregulated in ET leukocytes. Increased BCL-X<sub>L </sub>protein expression in PMF leukocytes and decreased BID protein expression in ET leukocytes were observed by Western Blot. In ET leukocytes, we found a correlation between JAK2 V617F allele burden and <it>BAX, BIK and BAD </it>gene expression and between <it>A1, BAX </it>and <it>BIK </it>and <it>PRV1 </it>gene expression. A negative correlation between <it>PRV1 </it>gene expression and platelet count was observed, as well as a positive correlation between <it>PRV1 </it>gene expression and splenomegaly.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest the participation of intrinsic apoptosis pathway in the MPN physiopathology. In addition, <it>PRV1 </it>and JAK2 V617F allele burden were linked to deregulation of the apoptotic machinery.</p

    Protection against tuberculosis by a single intranasal administration of DNA-hsp65 vaccine complexed with cationic liposomes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The greatest challenges in vaccine development include optimization of DNA vaccines for use in humans, creation of effective single-dose vaccines, development of delivery systems that do not involve live viruses, and the identification of effective new adjuvants. Herein, we describe a novel, simple technique for efficiently vaccinating mice against tuberculosis (TB). Our technique consists of a single-dose, genetic vaccine formulation of DNA-hsp65 complexed with cationic liposomes and administered intranasally.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We developed a novel and non-toxic formulation of cationic liposomes, in which the DNA-hsp65 vaccine was entrapped (ENTR-hsp65) or complexed (COMP-hsp65), and used to immunize mice by intramuscular or intranasal routes. Although both liposome formulations induced a typical Th1 pattern of immune response, the intramuscular route of delivery did not reduce the number of bacilli. However, a single intranasal immunization with COMP-hsp65, carrying as few as 25 μg of plasmid DNA, leads to a remarkable reduction of the amount of bacilli in lungs. These effects were accompanied by increasing levels of IFN-γ and lung parenchyma preservation, results similar to those found in mice vaccinated intramuscularly four times with naked DNA-hsp65 (total of 400 μg).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our objective was to overcome the significant obstacles currently facing DNA vaccine development. Our results in the mouse TB model showed that a single intranasal dose of COMP-hsp65 elicited a cellular immune response that was as strong as that induced by four intramuscular doses of naked-DNA. This formulation allowed a 16-fold reduction in the amount of DNA administered. Moreover, we demonstrated that this vaccine is safe, biocompatible, stable, and easily manufactured at a low cost. We believe that this strategy can be applied to human vaccines to TB in a single dose or in prime-boost protocols, leading to a tremendous impact on the control of this infectious disease.</p

    Trend and spatial analysis of prostate cancer mortality in the state of Sergipe, Brazil

    This is an ecological study with exploratory analysis of spatial and temporal data based on mortality data with respect to prostate cancer obtained from the Mortality Information System concerning residents of the state of Sergipe, Brazil between 2000 and 2015. The analysis of temporal trends was performed using the Joinpoint Regression Program through Poisson regression. Spatial analysis was performed using the empirical Bayesian model, Kernel analysis, Global Moran and Local indices. There were 1,986 deaths due to prostate cancer, most of which occurring after 60 years of age. An increasing, non-constant but significant trend in mortality rates was noted. The kernel density estimator showed hotspot densities of the highest rates of prostate cancer mortality in the north-eastern and central regions of the state. High-risk clusters were identified for prostate cancer mortality (I = 0.55, P<0.01). There was an increase in prostate cancer mortality rates and a heterogeneous geographic distribution of risk areas, with high-risk priority areas identified in certain regions of the state. These priority areas include the municipalities located in the Northeast (Amparo do São Francisco, Aquidabã, Canhoba, Cedro de São João and Telha), the West (Frei Paulo and Pedra Mole) and the south-western region of the state (Poço Verde and Simão Dias)

    Electrophoresis and spectrometric analyses of adaptation-related proteins in thermally stressed Chromobacterium violaceum

    Chromobacterium violaceum is a Gram-negative proteobacteria found in water and soil; it is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, such as the Amazon rainforest. We examined protein expression changes that occur in C. violaceum at different growth temperatures using electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. The total number of spots detected was 1985; the number ranged from 99 to 380 in each assay. The proteins that were identified spectrometrically were categorized as chaperones, proteins expressed exclusively under heat stress, enzymes involved in the respiratory and fermentation cycles, ribosomal proteins, and proteins related to transport and secretion. Controlling inverted repeat of chaperone expression and inverted repeat DNA binding sequences, as well as regions recognized by sigma factor 32, elements involved in the genetic regulation of the bacterial stress response, were identified in the promoter regions of several of the genes coding proteins, involved in the C. violaceum stress response. We found that 30°C is the optimal growth temperature for C. violaceum, whereas 25, 35, and 40°C are stressful temperatures that trigger the expression of chaperones, superoxide dismutase, a probable small heat shock protein, a probable phasing, ferrichrome-iron receptor protein, elongation factor P, and an ornithine carbamoyltransferase catabolite. This information improves our comprehension of the mechanisms involved in stress adaptation by C. violaceum. © FUNPEC-RP

    Search for CP violation in D+→ϕπ+ and D+s→K0Sπ+ decays

    A search for CP violation in D + → ϕπ + decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP -violating asymmetry is measured to be (−0.04 ± 0.14 ± 0.14)% for candidates with K − K + mass within 20 MeV/c 2 of the ϕ meson mass. A search for a CP -violating asymmetry that varies across the ϕ mass region of the D + → K − K + π + Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the D+s→K0Sπ+ decay is measured to be (0.61 ± 0.83 ± 0.14)%
