Heavy Quark Radiative Energy Loss - Applications to RHIC
Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account
the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation bellow
the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to transition
energy loss and medium induced Bremsstrahlung. Heavy quark medium induced
radiative energy loss is derived to all orders in opacity, .
Numerical evaluation of the energy loss suggest small suppression of high
charm quarks, and therefore provide a possible explanation for the
null effects observed by PHENIX in the prompt electron spectrum in as

Exact Site Percolation Thresholds Using the Site-to-Bond and Star-Triangle Transformations
I construct a two-dimensional lattice on which the inhomogeneous site
percolation threshold is exactly calculable and use this result to find two
more lattices on which the site thresholds can be determined. The primary
lattice studied here, the ``martini lattice'', is a hexagonal lattice with
every second site transformed into a triangle. The site threshold of this
lattice is found to be , while the others have and
. This last solution suggests a possible approach to establishing
the bound for the hexagonal site threshold, . To derive these
results, I solve a correlated bond problem on the hexagonal lattice by use of
the star-triangle transformation and then, by a particular choice of

Use of Probiotics as Growth Promoters and Immunostimulators in Fingerlings of Cyprinid Fish Species
Intensive aquaculture production has required the development of an individual’s resistance to disease rather than depending upon antibiotics or chemotherapeutics. The role of gastrointestinal microflora in disease resistance has been established in many fish species, which has led to the concept of manipulating gastrointestinal microflora for better health management. A number of studies has been conducted in different fish species with various useful microorganisms called ‘probiotics’ to amplify gastrointestinal microflora to fight against various infectious diseases. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms which protect the host from diseases. Probiotic protection can be achieved by various mechanisms. Most probiotics used in aquaculture belong to the lactic acid bacteria, the genus Bacillus, the photosynthetic bacteria, the yeast, notwithstanding other genera and species have also been used. The immunostimulatory effect of probiotics has been established in many fish species, but their direct involvement in the immune response is not well established. It has also been proven that the application of probiotics in aquaculture has beneficial effects on growth of fish as well as on the environment. At present, data about the efficacy of probiotics in commercial aquaculture of Serbia is still lacking. This review discusses mainly the studies and applications about effects, problems and perspectives of probiotics used in fingerlings of cyprinid fish species, and highlights immunostimulatory effects and growth promotion effects of commercial probiotic products. In the present paper the results that show positive influence of probiotics in cyprinides nutrition on production performance and immune system are summarized. Special accent is given to criteria for proper selection of probiotics in cyprinides production
Performance, intestinal histomorphology and bone composition of broiler chickens fed diets supplemented with genistein
The effect of dietary genistein on performance, intestinal morphology, caecal Lactobacillus spp. count, and tibia composition in broiler chickens after 21 and 37 days of feeding was investigated. A total of 360 Cobb 500 broiler chickens (21 days old) were randomly allocated to five treatments with six replicates of 12 birds each. They were fed a basal diet (C) or a basal diet supplemented with 200 (T1), 400 (T2), 600 (T3) and 800 (T4) mg genistein/kg of feed. Genistein supplementation did not affect feed intake, but improved bodyweight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) after 21 days, while 600 mg/kg led to a significant increase in FCR after 37 days of feeding. Plasma triglyceride level decreased with dietary genistein after 21 days, while increases were found in T3 and T4 groups after prolonged supplementation. Significantly improved duodenal and jejunal villus length and width, crypt depth and villus/crypt ratio were observed after the first and the second finishing periods, respectively, while adverse effects were found in the ileum for both periods. At 42 days old, greater spleen and heart weights were measured in broilers fed diets with 800 mg/kg than in other broiler groups. The shorter genistein supplementation period (21 days) of 200 and 400 mg/kg had a positive effect on tibia wet weight, ash and calcium (Ca) content, while 37 days of the higher genistein doses administered to the T2, T3 and T4 birds significantly increased caecal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts. Thus, recommended doses should not exceed 400 mg/kg.

Nickel’s Role in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma: Potential Involvement of microRNAs
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal cancer types with a limited overall survival rate due to the asymptomatic progression of symptoms in metastatic stages of the malignancy and the lack of an early reliable diagnostic biomarker. MicroRNAs (miRs/miRNAs) are small (~18–24 nucleotides), endogenous, non-coding RNAs, which are closely linked to the development of numerous malignancies comprising PDAC. Recent studies have described the role of environmental pollutants such as nickel (Ni) in PDAC, but the mechanisms of Ni-mediated toxicity in cancer are still not completely understood. Specifically, Ni has been found to alter the expression and function of miRs in several malignancies, leading to changes in target gene expression. In this study, we found that levels of Ni were significantly higher in cancerous tissue, thus implicating Ni in pancreatic carcinogenesis. Hence, in vitro studies followed by using both normal and pancreatic tumor cell lines and increasing Ni concentration increased lethality. Comparing LC50 values, Ni-acetate groups demonstrated lower values needed than in NiCl2 groups, suggesting greater Ni-acetate. Panc-10.05 cell line appeared the most sensitive to Ni compounds. Exposure to Ni-acetate resulted in an increased phospho-AKT, and decreased FOXO1 expression in Panc-10.05 cells, while NiCl2 also increased PTEN expression in Panc-10.05 cells. Specifically, following NiCl2 exposure to PDAC cells, the expression levels of miR-221 and miR-155 were significantly upregulated, while the expression levels of miR-126 were significantly decreased. Hence, our study has suggested pilot insights to indicate that the environmental pollutant Ni plays an important role in the progression of PDAC by promoting an association between miRs and Ni exposure during PDAC pathogenesis
Corrections to scaling in 2--dimensional polymer statistics
Writing for the mean
square end--to--end length of a self--avoiding polymer chain of
links, we have calculated for the two--dimensional {\em continuum}
case from a new {\em finite} perturbation method based on the ground state of
Edwards self consistent solution which predicts the (exact) exponent.
This calculation yields . A finite size scaling analysis of data
generated for the continuum using a biased sampling Monte Carlo algorithm
supports this value, as does a re--analysis of exact data for two--dimensional

Meson and baryon elliptic flow at high pT from parton coalescence
The large and saturating differential elliptic flow v2(pT) observed in Au+Au
reactions at RHIC so far could only be explained assuming an order of magnitude
denser initial parton system than estimated from perturbative QCD.
Hadronization via parton coalescence can resolve this ``opacity puzzle''
because it enhances hadron elliptic flow at large pT relative to that of
partons at the same transverse momentum. An experimentally testable consequence
of the coalescence scenario is that v2(pT) saturates at about 50% higher values
for baryons than for mesons. In addition, if strange quarks have weaker flow
than light quarks, hadron v2 at high pT decreases with relative strangeness

Thermal Dileptons at LHC
We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb
collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using
in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body
theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon
Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes
over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated
open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom

Piper sarmentosum inhibits ICAM-1 and Nox4 gene expression in oxidative stress-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aqueous extract of <it>Piper sarmentosum </it>(AEPS) is known to possess antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic activities but the mechanism responsible for it remains unclear. In early part of atherosclerosis, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) induces the expression of cellular adhesion molecules such as vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and E-selectin. NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) is the predominant source of superoxide in the endothelial cells whereas superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) are the antioxidant enzymes responsible for inactivating reactive oxygen species. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of AEPS on the gene expression of NF-κB, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, Nox4, SOD1, CAT and GPx in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>HUVECs were divided into four groups:- control; treatment with 180 μM hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>); treatment with 150 μg/mL AEPS and concomitant treatment with AEPS and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>for 24 hours. Total RNA was extracted from all the groups of HUVEC using TRI reagent. Subsequently, qPCR was carried out to determine the mRNA expression of NF-κB, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, Nox4, SOD1, CAT and GPx. The specificity of the reactions was verified using melting curve analysis and agarose gel electrophoresis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>When stimulated with H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, HUVECs expressed higher level of ICAM-1 (1.3-fold) and Nox4 (1.2-fold) mRNA expression. However, AEPS treatment led to a reduction in the mRNA expression of ICAM-1 (p < 0.01) and Nox4 (p < 0.05) in the H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-induced HUVECs. AEPS also upregulated the mRNA expression of SOD1 (p < 0.05), CAT (p < 0.01) and GPx (p < 0.05) in oxidative stress-induced HUVECs. There was no significant change in the mRNA expression of VCAM-1 and E-selectin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The expressional suppression of ICAM-1 and Nox4 and induction of antioxidant enzymes might be an important component of the vascular protective effect of AEPS.</p
Precise measurement of the W-boson mass with the CDF II detector
We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of
integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV
with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting
of 470126 W->enu candidates and 624708 W->munu candidates yield the measurement
MW = 80387 +- 12 (stat) +- 15 (syst) = 80387 +- 19 MeV. This is the most
precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the
precision of all previous measurements combined
