    Development of locally representative seismic hazard models

    Seismic hazard studies in regions of low and moderate seismic activities often resort to the use of attenuation relationships developed elsewhere but there are always doubts as to whether these imported relationships are representative of local conditions. Numerous well established stochastic attenuation models have also been developed for applications in Central and Eastern North America. However, such intraplate models could not be generalised across the globe to other regions of low and moderate seismic activities. Modelling the spatial and temporal distribution of seismic activities can also be thwarted with difficulties because of the paucity of data. This paper presents the experiences of the authors in overcoming these challenges when undertaking seismic hazard studies in different countries. Topics covered in the paper include attenuation modelling and the evaluation of seismic hazards for the determination of the earthquake loading model for engineering design

    Extreme endurance flights by landbirds crossing the Pacific Ocean: ecological corridor rather than barrier?

    Mountain ranges, deserts, ice fields and oceans generally act as barriers to the movement of land-dependent animals, often profoundly shaping migration routes. We used satellite telemetry to track the southward flights of bar-tailed godwits (Limosa lapponica baueri), shorebirds whose breeding and non-breeding areas are separated by the vast central Pacific Ocean. Seven females with surgically implanted transmitters flew non-stop 8117–11 680 km (10 153±1043 s.d.) directly across the Pacific Ocean; two males with external transmitters flew non-stop along the same corridor for 7008–7390 km. Flight duration ranged from 6.0 to 9.4 days (7.8±1.3 s.d.) for birds with implants and 5.0 to 6.6 days for birds with externally attached transmitters. These extraordinary non-stop flights establish new extremes for avian flight performance, have profound implications for understanding the physiological capabilities of vertebrates and how birds navigate, and challenge current physiological paradigms on topics such as sleep, dehydration and phenotypic flexibility. Predicted changes in climatic systems may affect survival rates if weather conditions at their departure hub or along the migration corridor should change. We propose that this transoceanic route may function as an ecological corridor rather than a barrier, providing a wind-assisted passage relatively free of pathogens and predators

    Host-plant acceptance on mineral soil and humus by the pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.)

    1 The pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) is an economically important pest of conifer forest regeneration in Europe and Asia. 2 Soil scarification, which usually exposes mineral soil, is widely used to protect seedlings from weevil attack. However, the mechanism behind this protective effect is not yet fully understood. 3 Field experiments were conducted to determine the pine weevil's responses to visual and odour stimuli from seedlings when moving on mineral soil and on undisturbed humus surface. 4 One experiment measured the number of pine weevils approaching seedlings, with and without added host odour, on mineral soil and undisturbed humus. Seedlings with added host odour attracted more weevils on both soil types. Unexpectedly, somewhat more weevils approached seedlings surrounded by mineral soil. 5 In a similar experiment, feeding attacks on seedlings planted directly in the soil were recorded. Only half as many seedlings were attacked on mineral soil as on undisturbed humus. 6 In the first experiment, the weevils were trapped 2.5 cm from the bases of the seedlings' stems, whereas they could reach the seedlings in the experiment where seedlings were planted directly in the soil. We conclude that the pine weevils' decision on whether or not to feed on a seedling is strongly influenced by the surrounding soil type and that this decision is taken in the close vicinity of the seedling. The presence of pure mineral soil around the seedling strongly reduces the likelihood that an approaching pine weevil will feed on it

    The Self Model and the Conception of Biological Identity in Immunology

    The self/non-self model, first proposed by F.M. Burnet, has dominated immunology for sixty years now. According to this model, any foreign element will trigger an immune reaction in an organism, whereas endogenous elements will not, in normal circumstances, induce an immune reaction. In this paper we show that the self/non-self model is no longer an appropriate explanation of experimental data in immunology, and that this inadequacy may be rooted in an excessively strong metaphysical conception of biological identity. We suggest that another hypothesis, one based on the notion of continuity, gives a better account of immune phenomena. Finally, we underscore the mapping between this metaphysical deflation from self to continuity in immunology and the philosophical debate between substantialism and empiricism about identity

    Effective interaction between helical bio-molecules

    The effective interaction between two parallel strands of helical bio-molecules, such as deoxyribose nucleic acids (DNA), is calculated using computer simulations of the "primitive" model of electrolytes. In particular we study a simple model for B-DNA incorporating explicitly its charge pattern as a double-helix structure. The effective force and the effective torque exerted onto the molecules depend on the central distance and on the relative orientation. The contributions of nonlinear screening by monovalent counterions to these forces and torques are analyzed and calculated for different salt concentrations. As a result, we find that the sign of the force depends sensitively on the relative orientation. For intermolecular distances smaller than 6A˚6\AA it can be both attractive and repulsive. Furthermore we report a nonmonotonic behaviour of the effective force for increasing salt concentration. Both features cannot be described within linear screening theories. For large distances, on the other hand, the results agree with linear screening theories provided the charge of the bio-molecules is suitably renormalized.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures included in text, 100 bibliog

    Analysis of Alfven eigenmodes destabilization by energetic particles in TJ-II using a Landau-closure model

    Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can be destabilized by energetic particles in neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasmas through inverse Landau damping and couplings with gap modes in the shear Alfven continua. We describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system using the reduced MHD equations, density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles as well as the geodesic acoustic wave dynamics. A closure relation adds the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects in the model. We apply the model to study the Alfven modes stability in TJ-II, performing a parametric analysis in a range of realistic values of energetic particle beta (beta(f)), ratios of thermal/Alfven velocities (V-th/V-A0), energetic particle density profiles and toroidal modes (n) including toroidal and helical couplings. The study predicts a large helical coupling between different toroidal modes and the destabilization of helical Alfven eigenmodes (HAE) with frequencies similar to the AE activity measured in TJ-II, between 50-400 kHz. The analysis has also revealed the destabilization of GAE (global Alfven eigenmodes), TAE (toroidal Alfven eigenmodes) and EPM (energetic particle modes). For the modes considered here, optimized TJ-II operations require a t profile in the range of [0.845, 0.979] to stabilize AEs in the inner and middle plasma. AEs in the plasma periphery cannot be fully stabilized, although for a configuration with t = [0.945, 1.079], only n = 7, 11, 15 AE are unstable with a growth rate 4 times smaller compared to the standard t = [1.54, 1.68] case and a frequency of 100 kHz. We reproduce the frequency sweeping evolution of the AE frequency observed in TJ-II as the t profile is varied.     Study of CP violation in Dalitz-plot analyses of B0 --> K+K-KS, B+ --> K+K-K+, and B+ --> KSKSK+

    We perform amplitude analyses of the decays B0→K+K−KS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, B+→K+K−K+B^+ \rightarrow K^+K^-K^+, and B+→KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, and measure CP-violating parameters and partial branching fractions. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 470×106470\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} decays, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. For B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, we find a direct CP asymmetry in B+→ϕ(1020)K+B^+ \to \phi(1020)K^+ of ACP=(12.8±4.4±1.3)A_{CP}= (12.8\pm 4.4 \pm 1.3)%, which differs from zero by 2.8σ2.8 \sigma. For B0→K+K−KS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, we measure the CP-violating phase ÎČeff(ϕ(1020)KS0)=(21±6±2)∘\beta_{\rm eff} (\phi(1020)K^0_S) = (21\pm 6 \pm 2)^\circ. For B+→KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, we measure an overall direct CP asymmetry of ACP=(4−5+4±2)A_{CP} = (4 ^{+4}_{-5} \pm 2)%. We also perform an angular-moment analysis of the three channels, and determine that the fX(1500)f_X(1500) state can be described well by the sum of the resonances f0(1500)f_0(1500), f2â€Č(1525)f_2^{\prime}(1525), and f0(1710)f_0(1710).Comment: 35 pages, 68 postscript figures. v3 - minor modifications to agree with published versio

    The food and nutrient intake of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers (Homo erectus) and of Western populations (Homo economicus) show marked variations. With increase in wealth and affluence there is a decrease in the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids and a significant increase in the intake of refined carbohydrates, fats (saturated & trans fats, omega-6 fatty acids) and salt in comparison with those of the Paleolithic period. The protein or amino acid intake was 2.5 fold greater (33 vs. 13%) in the Paleolithic diet of Homo erectus compared to that of the modern Western diet. Prior to the Agricultural Revolution, man's diet was based on an enormous variety of wild plants, eggs, fish and seeds. In comparison, today about 17% of plant species provide 90% of the world's food supply which is mainly contributed by grains produced from fertilizer-based rapidly grown crops potentially lower in nutrient density and higher in energy. Grains are high in omega-6 fatty acids and carbohydrates and low in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants compared to leafy green vegetables. The appropriate diet for Homo sapiens is characterized by high levels of protective essential nutrients; amino acids, minerals, vitamins, flavonoids, omega-6/3 fatty acids. Whereas the average diet of Homo erectus did comply with this evolutionary pattern, the modern Western dietary pattern of Homo economicus has excess of energy-rich refined carbohydrates, omega-6, trans and saturated fats. The consumption of such foods in wealthy countries in conjunction with sedentary behavior are associated with increased risk of deaths due to cardiovascular (CVDs) and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). © Nova Science Publishers, Inc
