    Self Assessment in Insects: Honeybee Queens Know Their Own Strength

    Contests mediate access to reproductive opportunities in almost all species of animals. An important aspect of the evolution of contests is the reduction of the costs incurred during intra-specific encounters to a minimum. However, escalated fights are commonly lethal in some species like the honeybee, Apis mellifera. By experimentally reducing honeybee queens' fighting abilities, we demonstrate that they refrain from engaging in lethal contests that typically characterize their reproductive dominance behavior and coexist peacefully within a colony. This suggests that weak queens exploit an alternative reproductive strategy and provides an explanation for rare occurrences of queen cohabitation in nature. Our results further indicate that self-assessment, but not mutual assessment of fighting ability occurs prior to and during the agonistic encounters

    Observation of the Decay B=> J/psi eta K and Search for X(3872)=> J/psi eta

    We report the observation of the BB meson decay B±J/ψηK±B^\pm\to J/\psi \eta K^\pm and evidence for the decay B0J/ψηKS0B^0\to J/\psi \eta K^0_S, using {90} million BBbarBBbar events collected at the \ensuremath{\Upsilon{(4S)}}\xspace resonance with the BaBarBaBar detector at the PEP-II e+ee^+ e^- asymmetric-energy storage ring. We obtain branching fractions of B\cal{B}(B±J/ψηK±(B^\pm\to J/\psi \eta K^{\pm})=(10.8±2.3(stat.)±2.4(syst.))×105(10.8\pm 2.3(\rm{stat.})\pm 2.4(\rm{syst.}))\times 10^{-5} and B\cal{B}(B0J/ψηKS0(B^0\to J/\psi\eta K_{\rm{S}}^{0})=(8.4±2.6(stat.)±2.7(syst.))×105(8.4\pm 2.6(\rm{stat.})\pm 2.7(\rm{syst.}))\times 10^{-5}. We search for the new narrow mass state, the X(3872), recently reported by the Belle Collaboration, in the decay B^\pm\to X(3872)K^\pm, X(3872)\to \jpsi \eta and determine an upper limit of B\cal{B}(B^\pm \to X(3872) K^\pm \to \jpsi \eta K^\pm) <7.7×106<7.7\times 10^{-6} at 90% C.L.Comment: 7 pages and two figures, submitted to Phys.     Measurement of b hadron lifetimes in exclusive decays containing a J/psi in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96TeV

    We report on a measurement of bb-hadron lifetimes in the fully reconstructed decay modes B^+ -->J/Psi K+, B^0 --> J/Psi K*, B^0 --> J/Psi Ks, and Lambda_b --> J/Psi Lambda using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb1{\rm fb}^{-1}, collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured lifetimes are τ\tauB^+ = 1.639±0.009(stat)±0.009(syst) ps1.639 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.009 {\rm (syst) ~ ps}, τ\tauB^0 = 1.507±0.010(stat)±0.008(syst) ps1.507 \pm 0.010 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.008 {\rm (syst) ~ ps} and τ\tauLambda_b = 1.537±0.045(stat)±0.014(syst) ps1.537 \pm 0.045 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.014 {\rm (syst) ~ ps}. The lifetime ratios are τ\tauB^+/τ\tauB^0 = 1.088±0.009(stat)±0.004(syst)1.088 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat})\pm 0.004 ({\rm syst}) and τ\tauLambda_b/τ\tauB^0 = 1.020±0.030(stat)±0.008(syst)1.020 \pm 0.030 ({\rm stat})\pm 0.008 ({\rm syst}).     Measurement of ZZ production in leptonic final states at {\surd}s of 1.96 TeV at CDF

    In this paper we present a precise measurement of the total ZZ production cross section in pp collisions at {\surd}s= 1.96 TeV, using data collected with the CDF II detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 6 fb-1. The result is obtained by combining separate measurements in the four-charged (lll'l'), and two-charged-lepton and two-neutral-lepton (llvv) decay modes of the Z. The combined measured cross section for pp {\to} ZZ is 1.64^(+0.44)_(-0.38) pb. This is the most precise measurement of the ZZ production cross section in 1.96 TeV pp collisions to date.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Measurement of time-dependent CP asymmetries in B-0 -> D-(*)+/-pi(-/+) decays and constraints on sin(2 beta+gamma)

    We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in fully reconstructed B-0-->D((*)+/-)pi(-/+) decays in approximately 88x10(6) Y(4S)-->B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit we obtain the following for the CP-violating parameters: a=-0.022+/-0.038 (stat)+/-0.020 (syst), a(*)=-0.068+/-0.038 (stat)+/-0.020 (syst), c(lep)=+0.025+/-0.068 (stat)+/-0.033 (syst), and c(lep)(*)=+0.031+/-0.070 (stat)+/-0.033 (syst). Using other measurements and theoretical assumptions we interpret the results in terms of the angles of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle, and find parallel tosin(2beta+gamma)parallel to>0.69 at 68% confidence level. We exclude the hypothesis of no CP violation [sin(2beta+gamma)=0] at 83% confidence level

    Search for the rare decay B-0 ->tau(+)tau(-) at BABAR

    We present the results of a search for the decay B-0 ->tau(+)tau(-) in a data sample of (232 +/- 3)x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-> BB decays using the BABAR detector. Certain extensions of the standard model predict measurable levels of this otherwise rare decay. We reconstruct fully one neutral B meson and seek evidence for the signal decay in the rest of the event. We find no evidence for signal events and obtain B(B-0 ->tau(+)tau(-))< 4.1x10(-3) at the 90% confidence level

    Search for High Mass Resonances Decaying to Muon Pairs in root s=1.96 TeV p(p)over-bar Collisions

    We present a search for a new narrow, spin-1, high mass resonance decaying to mu(+)mu(-) + X, using a matrix-element-based likelihood and a simultaneous measurement of the resonance mass and production rate. In data with 4.6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF detector in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1960 GeV, the most likely signal cross section is consistent with zero at 16% confidence level. We therefore do not observe evidence for a high mass resonance and place limits on models predicting spin-1 resonances, including M > 1071 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for a Z' boson with the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson
