    The Dark Side of Micro-Task Marketplaces: Characterizing Fiverr and Automatically Detecting Crowdturfing

    As human computation on crowdsourcing systems has become popular and powerful for performing tasks, malicious users have started misusing these systems by posting malicious tasks, propagating manipulated contents, and targeting popular web services such as online social networks and search engines. Recently, these malicious users moved to Fiverr, a fast-growing micro-task marketplace, where workers can post crowdturfing tasks (i.e., astroturfing campaigns run by crowd workers) and malicious customers can purchase those tasks for only $5. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of Fiverr. First, we identify the most popular types of crowdturfing tasks found in this marketplace and conduct case studies for these crowdturfing tasks. Then, we build crowdturfing task detection classifiers to filter these tasks and prevent them from becoming active in the marketplace. Our experimental results show that the proposed classification approach effectively detects crowdturfing tasks, achieving 97.35% accuracy. Finally, we analyze the real world impact of crowdturfing tasks by purchasing active Fiverr tasks and quantifying their impact on a target site. As part of this analysis, we show that current security systems inadequately detect crowdsourced manipulation, which confirms the necessity of our proposed crowdturfing task detection approach

    A search for molecules in damped Lyman-alpha absorbers occulting millimetre-loud quasars

    We have used the SEST 15-metre and Onsala 20-metre telescopes to perform deep (r.m.s. >~ 30 mJy) integrations of various molecular rotational transitions towards damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) known to occult millimetre-loud quasars. We have observed 6 new systems and improved the existing limits for 11 transitions. These limits may be approaching the sensitivities required to detect new systems and we present a small number of candidate systems which we believe warrant further observation.Comment: 7 pages, 1 PS figure, 4 tables.     Combined knockout of collecting duct endothelin A and B receptors causes hypertension and sodium retention

    The collecting duct (CD) endothelin (ET) system regulates blood pressure (BP) and Na excretion. CD-specific knockout (KO) of ET-1 causes hypertension, CD-specific KO of the ETA receptor does not alter BP, while CD-specific KO of the ETB receptor increases BP to a lesser extent than CD ET-1 KO. These findings suggest a paracrine role for CD-derived ET-1; however, they do not exclude compensation for the loss of one ET receptor by the other. To examine this, mice with CD-specific KO of both ETA and ETB receptors were generated (CD ETA/B KO). CD ETA/B KO mice excreted less urinary Na than controls during acute or chronic Na loading. Urinary aldosterone excretion and plasma renin concentration were similar during Na intake and both fell comparably during Na loading. On a normal sodium diet, CD ETA/B KO mice had increased BP, which increased further with high salt intake. The degree of BP elevation during normal Na intake was similar to CD ET-1 KO mice and higher than CD ETB KO animals. During 1 wk of Na loading, CD ETA/B KO mice had higher BPs than CD ETB KO, while BP was less than CD ET-1 KOs until the latter days of Na loading. These studies suggest that 1) CD ETA/B deficiency causes salt-sensitive hypertension, 2) CD ETA/B KO-associated Na retention is associated with failure to suppress the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and 3) CD ETA and ETB receptors exerts a combined hypotensive effect that exceeds that of either receptor alone

    A catalogue of damped Lyman alpha absorption systems and radio flux densities of the background quasars

    We present a catalogue of the 322 damped Lyman alpha absorbers taken from the literature. All damped Lyman alpha absorbers are included, with no selection on redshift or quasar magnitude. Of these, 123 are candidates and await confirmation using high resolution spectroscopy. For all 322 objects we catalogue the radio properties of the background quasars, where known. Around 60 quasars have radio flux densities above 0.1 Jy and approximately half of these have optical magnitudes brighter than V = 18.     Challenges in integrating Escherichia coli molecular biology data

    One key challenge in Systems Biology is to provide mechanisms to collect and integrate the necessary data to be able to meet multiple analysis requirements. Typically, biological contents are scattered over multiple data sources and there is no easy way of comparing heterogeneous data contents. This work discusses ongoing standardisation and interoperability efforts and exposes integration challenges for the model organism Escherichia coli K-12. The goal is to analyse the major obstacles faced by integration processes, suggest ways to systematically identify them, and whenever possible, propose solutions or means to assistmanual curation. Integration of gene, protein and compound data was evaluated by performing comparisons over EcoCyc, KEGG, BRENDA, ChEBI, Entrez Gene and UniProt contents. Cross-links, a number of standard nomenclatures and name information supported the comparisons. Except for the gene integration scenario, in no other scenario an element of integration performed well enough to support the process by itself. Indeed, both the integration of enzyme and compound records imply considerable curation. Results evidenced that, even for a well-studied model organism, source contents are still far from being as standardized as it would be desired and metadata varies considerably from source to source. Before designing any data integration pipeline, researchers should decide on the sources that best fit the purpose of analysis and be aware of existing conflicts/inconsistencies to be able to intervene in their resolution.     ASPIRER: A new computational approach for identifying non-classical secreted proteins based on deep learning

    Protein secretion has a pivotal role in many biological processes and is particularly important for intercellular communication, from the cytoplasm to the host or external environment. Gram-positive bacteria can secrete proteins through multiple secretion pathways. The non-classical secretion pathway has recently received increasing attention among these secretion pathways, but its exact mechanism remains unclear. Non-classical secreted proteins (NCSPs) are a class of secreted proteins lacking signal peptides and motifs. Several NCSP predictors have been proposed to identify NCSPs and most of them employed the whole amino acid sequence of NCSPs to construct the model. However, the sequence length of different proteins varies greatly. In addition, not all regions of the protein are equally important and some local regions are not relevant to the secretion. The functional regions of the protein, particularly in the N- and C-terminal regions, contain important determinants for secretion. In this study, we propose a new hybrid deep learning-based framework, referred to as ASPIRER, which improves the prediction of NCSPs from amino acid sequences. More specifically, it combines a whole sequence-based XGBoost model and an N-terminal sequence-based convolutional neural network model; 5-fold cross-validation and independent tests demonstrate that ASPIRER achieves superior performance than existing state-of-the-art approaches.     Deconvolving the pre-Himalayan Indian margin – tales of crustal growth and destruction

    The metamorphic core of the Himalaya is composed of Indian cratonic rocks with two distinct crustal affinities that are defined by radiogenic isotopic geochemistry and detrital zircon age spectra. One is derived predominantly from the Paleoproterozoic and Archean rocks of the Indian cratonic interior and is either represented as metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS) or as slices of the distal cratonic margin. The other is the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS) whose provenance is less clear and has an enigmatic affinity. Here we present new detrital zircon Hf analyses from LHS and GHS samples spanning over 1000 kilometers along the orogen that respectively show a striking similarity in age spectra and Hf isotope ratios. Within the GHS, the zircon age populations at 2800–2500 Ma, 1800 Ma, 1000 Ma and 500 Ma can be ascribed to various Gondwanan source regions; however, a pervasive and dominant Tonian age population (∼860–800 Ma) with a variably enriched radiogenic Hf isotope signature (εHf = 10 to -20) has not been identified from Gondwana or peripheral accreted terranes. We suggest this detrital zircon age population was derived from a crustal province that was subsequently removed by tectonic erosion. Substantial geologic evidence exists from previous studies across the Himalaya supporting the Cambro-Ordovician Kurgiakh Orogeny. We propose the tectonic removal of Tonian lithosphere occurred prior to or during this Cambro-Ordovician episode of orogenesis in a similar scenario as is seen in the modern Andean and Indonesian orogenies, wherein tectonic processes have removed significant portions of the continental lithosphere in a relatively short amount of time. This model described herein of the pre-Himalayan northern margin of Greater India highlights the paucity of the geologic record associated with the growth of continental crust. Although the continental crust is the archive of Earth history, it is vital to recognize the ways in which preservation bias and destruction of continental crust informs geologic models

    Male predominance of pneumonia and hospitalization in pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 infection

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pandemic influenza A (H1N1) disproportionately affects different age groups. The purpose of the current study was to describe the age and gender difference of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) cases that lead to pneumonia, hospitalization or ICU admission.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were collected retrospectively between May 2009 and December 2009. All of the diagnoses of H1N1 were confirmed by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>During the study period there were 3402 cases of RT-PCR positive H1N1, among which 1812 were males and 1626 were adults (> 15 years of age). 6% (206/3402) of patients required hospitalization, 3.6% (122/3402) had infiltrates on chest radiographs, and 0.70% (24/3402) were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). The overall fatality rate was 0.1% (4/3402). The rate of hospitalization was sharply increased in patients ≥ 50 years of age especially in male. Out of 122 pneumonia patients, 68.8% (84 patients) were male. Among the patients admitted to the ICU, 70.8% (17 patients) were male. Approximately 1 of 10 H1N1-infected patients admitted to the ICU were ≥ 70 years of age.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Among the confirmed cases of H1N1, the ICU admission rate was < 1% and the case fatality rate was 0.1%. Male had a significantly higher rate of pneumonia and hospital admission. These findings should be taken into consideration when developing vaccination and treatment strategies.</p

    Oh, Jeremy Corbyn! Why did Labour Party membership soar after the 2015 general election?

    This article investigates the remarkable surge in individual membership of the Labour Party after the general election of May 2015, particularly after Jeremy Corbyn was officially nominated as a candidate for the leadership in June of that year. Using both British Election Study and Party Members Project data, we explain the surge by focussing on the attitudinal, ideological and demographic characteristics of the members themselves. Findings suggest that, along with support for the leader and yearning for a new style of politics, feelings of relative deprivation played a significant part: many ‘left-behind’ voters (some well-educated, some less so) joined Labour for the first time when a candidate with a clearly radical profile appeared on the leadership ballot. Anti-capitalist and left-wing values mattered too, particularly for those former members who decided to return to the party
