Well-Ordered Science’s Basic Problem

Kitcher has proposed an ideal-theory account—well-ordered science (WOS)— of the collective good that science’s research agenda should promote. Against criticism regarding WOS’s action-guidance, Kitcher has advised critics not to confuse substantive ideals and the ways to arrive at them, and he has defended WOS as a necessary and useful ideal for science policy. I provide a distinction between two types of ideal-theories that helps clarifying WOS’s elusive nature. I use this distinction to argue that the action-guidance problem that WOS faces remains even under the aims/means distinction, because the WOS’s failure is more basic than critics have suggested

A pressure impulse theory for hemispherical liquid impact problems

Liquid impact problems for hemispherical fluid domain are considered. By using the concept of pressure impulse we show that the solution of the flow induced by the impact is reduced to the derivation of Laplace's equation in spherical coordinates with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The structure of the flow at the impact moment is deduced from the spherical harmonics representation of the solution. In particular we show that the slip velocity has a logarithmic singularity at the contact line. The theoretical predictions are in very good agreement both qualitatively and quantitatively with the first time step of a numerical simulation with a Navier-Stokes solver named Gerris.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in European Journal of Mechanics - B/Fluid

Internationalisierungskonzepte deutscher Kunstbuchverlage seit 1990

Die Internationalisierung deutscher Kunstbuchverlage ist eine Entwicklung, die Mitte der 1980er Jahre einsetzte und um 1990 zu einem Branchenphänomen wurde. Deutsche Kunstbuchverlage, allen voran der Kölner Benedikt Taschen Verlag, produzierten erfolgreich Kunstbücher, die nicht mehr nur auf dem deutschen Markt, sondern auch im Ausland erfolgreich vertrieben wurden. Um 1990 kann man einen regelrechten Paradigmenwechsel bei den unternehmerischen Strategien deutscher Kunstbuchverleger beobachten: Immer mehr Verlage setzen auf internationale Eigenproduktionen und organisieren selbst die Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen und den Vertrieb in andere Länder in eigener Regie, nachdem die Praxis der internationalen Koeditionen zwischen Kunstbuchverlegern mehrerer Nationen bei anspruchsvollen Kunstbänden nicht länger funktionierte. Diese Arbeit beleuchtet die verschiedenen Internationalisierungskonzepte der deutschen Kunstbuchverlage Taschen, Prestel, Hatje Cantz, DuMont und teNeues im Rahmen von fünf Case Studies. Die forschungsleitenden Fragen lauten: Welche Internationalisierungskonzepte haben die deutschen Kunstbuchverlage entwickelt und angewendet? Welche Interessen und Motive hatten sie dabei? Welche Phasen der Internationalisierung sind dabei seit 1990 erkennen? Und: Wie erfolgreich war die Internationalisierung für die Unternehmen? Welches sind ihre Zukunftsperspektiven? Ausführlich werden zu jedem Verlag die verlagshistorischen Voraussetzungen für die Internationalisierung und die Programm-, Produktions- und Vertriebsstrategien auf dem Weg zum internationalen Kunstbuchverlag behandelt. Simone Philippi (geb. 1964) studierte Kunstgeschichte, Publizistik und Germanistik in Bochum und Köln. Nach ihrer Magisterarbeit über "Constantin Brancusis Skulpturenensemble in Tirgu Jiu" (1989) und beruflichen Stationen in einem Sachbuch- und einem Zeitschriftenverlag ist sie seit 1993 als Lektorin und seit 1997 als Managing Editor beim Kölner Kunstbuchverlag Taschen tätig und betreut dort Titel zu Kunst, Design und Fotografie
