Machine Learning Based Efficient Qt-Mtt Partitioning for VVC Inter Coding

    Get PDF
The Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) have standardized the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) in 2020 targeting efficient coding of the emerging video services and formats such as 8K and immersive video streaming applications. VVC standard enhances the coding efficiency by 40% at the cost of an encoder computational complexity increase estimated to 859%(x8) compared to the previous standard High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). This work aims at reducing the complexity of the VVC encoder under the Random Access (RA) configuration. The proposed method takes advantage of the inter prediction in order to predict the split probabilities through a convolutional neural network. Our solution reaches 31.8% of complexity reduction for a negligible bitrate increase of 1.11% outperforming state-of-the-art methods.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe

Resolving and probing the circumstellar disk of the Herbig Ae star MWC 480 at 1.4 mm: Evolved dust?

We present high resolution 0.45" x 0.32" observations from the BIMA array toward the Herbig Ae system MWC 480 in the lambda = 1.4 mm dust continuum. We resolve a circumstellar disk of radius ~170 AU and constrain the disk parameters by comparing the observations to flat disk models. These results show that the typical fit parameters of the disk, such as the mass, Md ~ 0.04-0.18 Mo, and the surface density power law index, p=0.5 or 1, are comparable to those of the lower mass T Tauri stars. The dust in the MWC 480 disk can be modeled as processed dust material (beta ~ 0.8), similar to the Herbig Ae star CQ Tau disk; the fitted disk parameters are also consistent with less-evolved dust (beta ~ 1.2). The possibility of grain growth in the MWC 480 circumstellar disk is supported by the acceptable fits with beta ~ 0.8. The surface density power-law profiles of p=0.5 and p=1 can be easily fit to the MWC 480 disk; however, a surface density power-law profile similiar to the minimum mass solar nebula model p=1.5 is ruled out at an 80% confidence level.Comment: ApJ Accepted. 17 page

High Resolution K-band Spectroscopy of MWC 480 and V1331 Cyg

We present high resolution (R=25,000-35,000) K-band spectroscopy of two young stars, MWC 480 and V1331 Cyg. Earlier spectrally dispersed (R=230) interferometric observations of MWC 480 indicated the presence of an excess continuum emission interior to the dust sublimation radius, with a spectral shape that was interpreted as evidence for hot water emission from the inner disk of MWC 480. Our spectrum of V1331 Cyg reveals strong emission from CO and hot water vapor, likely arising in a circumstellar disk. In comparison, our spectrum of MWC 480 appears mostly featureless. We discuss possible ways in which strong water emission from MWC 480 might go undetected in our data. If strong water emission is in fact absent from the inner disk, as our data suggest, the continuum excess interior to the dust sublimation radius that is detected in the interferometric data must have another origin. We discuss possible physical origins for the continuum excess.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Ap

The X-Ray Origin of Herbig AeBe Systems: New Insights

We present a statistical study of the X-Ray emission toward 22 Herbig AeBe stars using the Chandra archive. We probe the origin of the X-Rays toward Herbig stars: are they intrinsic? This question is addressed by correlations between the physical stellar properties and the X-Ray emission. There is a weak correlation between the continuum radio emission at lambda = 3.6cm and Lx, which suggests that the X-Ray emission depends upon the source. On the other hand, no correlation was found with the stellar rotational period, but that only excludes solar-like magnetic activity as the origin of the X-Rays. Most importantly, the X-Ray luminosity of Herbig AeBe stars have a different distribution than T Tauri stars, suggesting X-Ray emission from an unseen late type star companion can be ruled out with an 80% confidence level. This implies that the Herbig AeBe stars must have magnetic activity. In addition, we report the observation of five sources for the first time, three detections.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journa

Wavelet Decomposition Pre-processing for Spatial Scalability Video Compression Scheme

    No full text
International audienceScalable video coding enables to compress the video at different formats within a single layered bitstream. SHVC, the scalable extension of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, enables x2 spatial scalability, among other additional features. The closed-loop architecture of the SHVC codec is based on the use of multiple instances of the HEVC codec to encode the video layers, which considerably increases the encoding complexity. With the arrival of new immersive video formats, like 4K, 8K, High Frame Rate (HFR) and 360° videos, the quantity of data to compress is exploding, making the use of high-complexity coding algorithms unsuitable. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity scalable coding scheme based on the use of a single HEVC codec instance and a wavelet-based decomposition as preprocessing. The pre-encoding image decomposition relies on well-known simple Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) kernels, such as Haar or Le Gall 5/3. Compared to SHVC, the proposed architecture achieves a similar rate distortion performance with a coding complexity reduction of 50%
