We have studied Black Grouse population abundance and its dynamics in large regions of North-Europe and Urals’ taiga (Finland, Russian Karelia, Murmansk, Arhangel, Kirov and Komi regions and). The data is based on Winter Track Counts (WTC, Priklonski, 1973), where all grouse sightings are recorded. We also studied the longterm Black Grouse abundance changes in Russian and Belarus Natural Reserves (by “Chronical of Natural” Programme, including summer counts of forest grouses): Pinezhsky, Pechoro-Ilychskiy, National Park "Mechera", Nature Reserve "Kivach", "Bryansk Forest", Kostomuksha Nature Reserve Volzhsko-Kamsky National Nature Biosphere Reserve and Visimskiy State Nature Reserves. The highest and most stable abundances of Black Grouse were recorded from East Fennoscandia (Karelia – 3.6 birds per 10 km; Finland – 4.4, coefficient of variation – 12% and 27%, respectively), whereas in the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk Regions and Komi republic, e.g. the species abundance indices were 0.5, 2.5 and 1.1 birds per 10 km, respectively. The “Peak” and minimal abundance years do not concur in different regions of north-European taiga. In Komi in the period from 2001 to 2013, the number of the black grouse declined twice, in Arhangel in the period 30 years – decreased fivefold. In Tatarstan Republic (Volzhsko-Kamsky National Nature Biosphere Reserve) after 1980 abundance decreased rapidly and at last 10 tears – disappeared. In Central Siberia BG are small in numbers and rare. The data suggest Black Grouse abundance varies significantly across Northern Eurasia and among years. One may presume there are some factors acting in different directions: towards convergence and towards divergence of the trends.Peer reviewe

Objective. To assess the overall and disease-free survival rates in patients with EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma, who underwent surgery after achieving the objective response to tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy.Material and Methods. The overall and disease-free survival rates were analyzed in 18 patients with EGFR-positive lung adenocarcinoma, which was inoperable at presentation due to locally advanced disease or the evidence of distant metastasis. In accordance with the clinical standards, patients were recommended for TKI therapy. Surgical resection was performed after achieving the objective tumor response to TKI therapy. The control group included 23 patients with EGFR mutation-positive lung adenocarcinoma, who did not undergo surgery after receiving TKI therapy.Results. The study revealed a statistically significant effect of surgical resection on the overall survival (OS) in patients with EGFR mutation-positive stage III–IV lung adenocarcinoma after response to TKI therapy (p=0.004). However, there was no statistically significant effect on the disease-free survival (DFS) (p=0.40). There was a tendency to increase in the median OS in patients of the study group (46 months) compared to that in patients of the control group (26 months). Surgery in the study group was characterized with some technical difficulties associated with severe fibrosis. However, this did not affect the duration of surgery and the volume of blood loss.Conclusion. Tumor resection in patients with EGFR mutation-positive stage III–IV lung adenocarcinoma is feasible and safe, but requires highly qualified team surgeons in well-equipped medical centers. Our study revealed that the combination of EGFR-TKI and tumor resection provided better PFS and OS than EGFR-TKI alone. However, further studies are required.

Brown bear attacks on humans : a worldwide perspective

    Get PDF
The increasing trend of large carnivore attacks on humans not only raises human safety concerns but may also undermine large carnivore conservation efforts. Although rare, attacks by brown bears Ursus arctos are also on the rise and, although several studies have addressed this issue at local scales, information is lacking on a worldwide scale. Here, we investigated brown bear attacks (n = 664) on humans between 2000 and 2015 across most of the range inhabited by the species: North America (n = 183), Europe (n = 291), and East (n = 190). When the attacks occurred, half of the people were engaged in leisure activities and the main scenario was an encounter with a female with cubs. Attacks have increased significantly over time and were more frequent at high bear and low human population densities. There was no significant difference in the number of attacks between continents or between countries with different hunting practices. Understanding global patterns of bear attacks can help reduce dangerous encounters and, consequently, is crucial for informing wildlife managers and the public about appropriate measures to reduce this kind of conflicts in bear country.Peer reviewe

Room-temperature nitrophenol reduction over Ag–CeO2 catalysts: the role of catalyst preparation method

    Get PDF
Ag–CeO2 catalysts (20 mol % Ag) were synthesized using different techniques (co-precipitation, impregnation, and impregnation of pre-reduced ceria), characterized by XRD, N2 sorption, TEM, H2-TPR methods, and probed in room-temperature p-nitrophenol reduction into p-aminophenol in aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst preparation method was found to determine the textural characteristics, the oxidation state and distribution of silver and, hence, the catalytic activity in the p-nitrophenol reduction. The impregnation technique was the most favorable for the formation over the ceria surface of highly dispersed silver species that are active in the p-nitrophenol reduction (the first-order rate constant k = 0.656 min−1)

Low-temperature CO oxidation over Ag/SiO2 catalysts: Effect of OH/Ag ratio

    No full text
Combined application of TPx methods, H2‐O2 titration, UV–vis DRS, TGA‐DSC‐MS, TEM, XRD, N2 adsorption at −196 oC allowed proving the OH/Ag molar ratio as the key parameter defining the catalytic properties of silica-supported silver (Ag/SiO2) in low‐temperature CO oxidation. A new insight into the formation of active species on the catalyst surface is presented. In this study, Ag/SiO2 catalysts with Ag loading of 5 and 8 wt.% were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method on the basis of commercial silicas preliminary calcined at 500, 700 and 900 °C. Detailed characterization of catalysts by physicochemical methods revealed that molar ratio between the concentration of surface OH groups (normalized to support mass) and silver amount in the prepared catalysts (OH/Ag ratio) affects the silver dispersion, structure of silver nanoparticles (NPs) and their catalytic properties. Only at optimal value of OH/Ag ratio the silver NPs are stated to possess both high dispersion and defective multidomain structure (that consists of several nanodomains) providing the adsorption of weakly bound oxygen species responsible for high catalytic activity in CO oxidation at low‐temperature. Additionally, the co-existence of two types of active sites reacting with CO at room temperature with and without formation of adsorbed carbonate species is discussed. The first type of active sites was catalytically active in low-temperature CO oxidation with CO2 release at room temperature (RT). The second type may retain surface carbonate species up to ∼40–50 °C. The balance between these species shifts towards the first type for the active catalyst
