    The Canis tangle: a systematics overview and taxonomic recommendations

    Despite high research interest, the systematics and taxonomy of mammalian genus Canis are among the most convoluted and controversial: species boundaries are blurred and incongruent with any existing species concept, while genetic differences between species are low. I provide an overview of existing controversies, the most recent findings, and taxonomic possibilities, and recommend the most practical and well-substantiated solutions. The genus boundaries have to be changed, with two African jackals (C. adustus & C. mesomelas) moved to a separate genus Lupulella. The systematic status of taxa occurring in eastern North America has caused much argument; most recent data indicate that Algonquin (C. lycaon lycaon) and Red (C. l rufus and recently exterminated subspecies) Wolves originate from ancient hybridization and should be considered a separate species, while two other populations are of more recent hybrid origin. The systematic position, intraspecific classification, origin and taxonomy of Dog (C. familiaris) are particularly controversial. It has been alternatively classified as a subspecies of Gray Wolf (C.lupus), a subspecies of Dingo (C. dingo), or a full species (C. familiaris) with Dingo as a subspecies. Analysis of available data shows that Dog should be classified as a full species with four subspecies, since its origin from a common ancestor with modern Gray Wolf has likely predated its domestication (contrary to the most popular view), and interbreeding between Dog and Gray Wolf in the wild is limited. It is possible that never-domesticated Dog populations have survived in southeastern Asia until very recently, or even exist today

    To outline further genetic mechanisms of transformation from follicular lymphoma (FL) to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), we have performed whole genome array-CGH in 81 tumors from 60 patients [29 de novo DLBCL (dnDLBCL), 31 transformed DLBCL (tDLBCL), and 21 antecedent FL]. In 15 patients, paired tumor samples (primary FL and a subsequent tDLBCL) were available, among which three possessed more than two subsequent tumors, allowing us to follow specific genetic alterations acquired before, during, and after the transformation. Gain of 2p15-16.1 encompassing, among others, the REL, BCL11A, USP34, COMMD1, and OTX1 genes was found to be more common in the tDLBCL compared with dnDLBCL (P < 0.001). Furthermore, a high-level amplification of 2p15-16.1 was also detected in the FL stage prior to transformation, indicating its importance during the transformation event. Quantitative real-time PCR showed a higher level of amplification of REL, USP34, and COMMD1 (all involved in the NF kappa B-pathway) compared with BCL11A, which indicates that the altered genes disrupting the NF kappa B pathway may be the driver genes of transformation rather than the previously suggested BCL11A. Moreover, a 17q21.33 amplification was exclusively found in tDLBCL, never in FL (P < 0.04) or dnDLBCL, indicating an upregulation of genes of importance during the later phase of transformation. Taken together, our study demonstrates potential genomic markers for disease progression to clinically more aggressive forms. We also confirm the importance of the TP53-, CDKN2A-, and NF kappa B-pathways for the transformation from FL to DLBCL

    The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

    Pulmonary artery embolism by a metal fragment after a booby trap explosion in a combat patient injured in the armed conflict in East Ukraine: a case report and review of the literature

    Background: Pulmonary artery embolization due to projectile embolus is a rare complication in combat patients. Such embolization is rare for combat patients in the ongoing armed conflict, in East Ukraine since 2014. Case presentation: We report a clinical case of a 34-year-old Caucasian combat patient who was injured after an explosion of a booby trap hand grenade. This soldier was diagnosed with severe abdominal and skeletal trauma: damage of the duodenum and transverse colon, internal bleeding due to inferior vena cava damage and fractures of both lower extremities. The patient was treated at a highly specialized surgical center within the “golden hour” time. Whole-body computed tomography scan was performed as a routine screening method for hemodynamically stable patients, at which we identified a projectile embolus due to the explosion of a booby trap hand grenade in the right midlobar pulmonary artery. Our patient had no clinical manifestation of pulmonary artery embolism. At follow-up, our patient was diagnosed with the following complications: multiple necrosis and perforations of the transverse colon leading to a fecal peritonitis; duodenum suture line leakage caused the formation of a duodenal fistula; postoperative wound infection. These complications required multiple secondary operations, and in accordance to the principles of damage-control tactics, the extraction of projectile-embolus was postponed. Open surgery retrieval of the metal fragment was successfully performed on the 80th day after injury. Our patient was discharged from the hospital on day 168th after injury. Conclusions: Literature analysis shows a significant difference of clinical management for patient with projectile embolism in hybrid war settings as compared to previously described cases of combat and civil gunshot injuries. Damage control tactics and the concept of the “golden hour” are highly effective for those injured in a hybrid war. A whole-body computed tomography scan is an effective screening method for asymptomatic patients with projectile-embolism of the great vessels. The investigation of a greater cohort of combat patients with severe injuries and projectile-embolism should be performed in order to develop a better guideline for these patients and to save more lives

    State support of JSC “Russian railways”

    The main sources of funds for railway investment projects in Russia are still state and regional budgets, funds from the National Welfare Fund, the net profit of Russian Railways, and pension savings from the Pension Fund of Russia. The reform of the system of the Ministry of Railways and the creation of JSC “Russian Railways”, which began in 2016, has not yet released the state budget from financing its needs, and there has been no active use of private investment. Moreover, the monopoly began to seek to shift the financing of not only the modernization and construction of tracks, but even the maintenance of existing infra-structure on the shoulders of the state and shippers. From year to year, there is an increase in the total amount of state support for Russian Railways. Part of the received state support funds in the period under review is spent inefficiently by JSC “Russian Railways”. The remaining budget funds that are not used by JSC “Russian Railways” additionally burden the economy, increasing inflation by various surcharges to tariffs, but the available budget funds are not selected in full, and billions of fines are paid for this. There are low rates of implementation of individual investment projects, overestimation of expenses for the purchase of equipment, an increase in the cost of construction, the cost of contracts for a number of objects exceeds the cost determined by state expertise, etc

    A new approach for reconstruction of the gunshot defect of the flexor surface of the ungual (distal) phalanx by the proper transverse branch of the digital artery: a case report of combat patient injured in the Russo-Ukrainian war

    Abstract Background Gunshot injury to the hand is severe trauma, requiring complicated reconstruction surgery for the damaged anatomic site to restore all the hand functions. The aim of this study was to show the example of the distal phalanx reconstruction by using a flap with distal transverse digital artery (DTDA) blood supply as well as to demonstrate the utility of the audio Doppler application at the reconstruction stage in the combat patient injured in the Russo-Ukrainian war. Case presentation In this report, we present a case of a 26-year-old service member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces delivered to the Military Medical Clinical Centre on the fourth day after the gunshot gutter shrapnel wound of the distal flexor of the 2nd digit with a gunshot fracture of the ungula (distal) and middle phalanges of the 2nd digit of the right hand along with a bone deficiency of the osseous structure of the distal and middle phalanges, volar soft tissues. The dorsal metacarpal artery (DMCA) flap is a universal variant among the tools of the reconstructive plastic surgeon engaged in reconstructing defects of the digital dorsum and flexors with a limited range of flaps. We consider this to be a key that conforms with the majority of the reconstructive principles, such as ‘analog replacement’, and which is simple, adequate, and easy for operating with a minimal sequela of the donor site. Conclusions The distal transverse digital artery (DTDA) could be considered for hand reconstructive surgery for repairing defects of the flexor surface of the digit injury and hands after severe gunshot injury
