Screening of various botanical extracts for antioxidant activity using DPPH free radical method
Aiming at the exploration of herbal use by society, crude extracts of the seeds of some commonly used medicinal plants (Vitis vinifera, Tamarindus indica and Glycin max) were screened for their free radical scavenging properties using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The overall antioxidant activity of grape seeds (Vitis vinifera) was the strongest, followed in descending order by soybean (Glycin max) and tamarind (Tamarindus indica). The seeds extract of Vitis vinifera, Glycin max and Tamarindus indica showed 85.61%, 83.45% and 79.26%, DPPH scavenging activity respectively.Key words: Antioxidant activity, DPPH, free-radical, Vitis vinifera, Glycin max, Tamarindus indica
Bacteriological study of food in the Pakistan’s peri-urban areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad
In order to ascertain the food quality for human consumption the bacteriological analysis was carried out in a prospective study in collaboration with National Institute of Health, Islamabad. The surveillance work was conducted during the months of July to August peak summer season to evaluate the objective parameters for assessment of the bacteriological and hygienic status of food being consumed in the peri-urban area of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Out of a total of 91 samples, the various bacterial contaminants such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, fungal species were isolated and identified using standard cultural and biochemical methods. It was observed that in total food samples, 25.5% were positive for E. coli, 16.6% for S. aureus and 11.1% for Salmonella species. This study highlighted the poor hygienic conditions for the food quality standards in the area of investigation. It was concluded that the food related endemic health concerns can be checked by taking appropriate preventive measures to forestall the outbreaks of gastroenteritis and food poisoning in the future as a serious health problem.Keywords: Faecal coliforms, total viable count, total plate count
Relationship of BMI and age with gallstone disease
Objective: To find out the relationship of BMI and age in patients with gallstone disease.
Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study done from March 2019 to February 2020 at the Department of General Surgery PIMS, Islamabad. All patients admitted with a diagnosis of Cholelithiasis were included and patients with previous abdominal surgery were excluded from the study. Patients’ data was collected about their age, sex, dietary habits, occupation and medical history. Their weight in kilograms and heights in centimeters were measured and BMI was calculated in kg/cm2. All data was collected, recorded and analyzed using SPSS 22.
Results: A total of 158 patients were included in the study with mean age was 46.2±6.7 years (18 - 83 years). Majority (63%) of the patients were between 41 and 60 age group. There were 120 females and 38 males with ratio of 3:1. The mean BMI of the study population was 25.8 ± 7.61 (Range 19.37 - 33.12). Most of the patients were healthy (n=86, 54.4%) having their BMIs between 18 and 24.9 whereas 72 (46.6%) patients were overweight and obese.
Conclusion: Increased frequency of cholelithiasis is found with increasing age even with normal BMI

Sociological and Human Developmental Explanations of Crime: Conflict or Consensus
This paper examines multidisciplinary correlates of delinquency in an attempt to integrate sociological and environmental theories of crime with human developmental and biological explanations of crime. Structural equation models are applied to assess links among biological, psychological, and environmental variables collected prospectively from birth through age 17 on a sample of 800 black children at high risk for learning and behavioral disorders. Results show that for both males and females, aggression and disciplinary problems in school during adolescence are the strongest predictors of repeat offense behavior. Whereas school achievement and family income and stability are also significant predictors of delinquency for males, early physical development is the next strongest predictor for females. Results indicate that some effects on delinquency also vary during different ages. It is suggested that behavioral and learning disorders have both sociological and developmental correlates and that adequate educational resources are necessary to ensure channels of legitimate opportunities for high-risk youths

Evaluation of the public health impacts of traffic congestion: a health risk assessment
Background: Traffic congestion is a significant issue in urban areas in the United States and around the world. Previous analyses have estimated the economic costs of congestion, related to fuel and time wasted, but few have quantified the public health impacts or determined how these impacts compare in magnitude to the economic costs. Moreover, the relative magnitudes of economic and public health impacts of congestion would be expected to vary significantly across urban areas, as a function of road infrastructure, population density, and atmospheric conditions influencing pollutant formation, but this variability has not been explored. Methods: In this study, we evaluate the public health impacts of ambient exposures to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations associated with a business-as-usual scenario of predicted traffic congestion. We evaluate 83 individual urban areas using traffic demand models to estimate the degree of congestion in each area from 2000 to 2030. We link traffic volume and speed data with the MOBILE6 model to characterize emissions of PM2.5 and particle precursors attributable to congestion, and we use a source-receptor matrix to evaluate the impact of these emissions on ambient PM2.5 concentrations. Marginal concentration changes are related to a concentration-response function for mortality, with a value of statistical life approach used to monetize the impacts. Results: We estimate that the monetized value of PM2.5-related mortality attributable to congestion in these 83 cities in 2000 was approximately 60 billion. In future years, the economic impacts grow (to over 13 billion in 2020 before increasing to $17 billion in 2030, given increasing population and congestion but lower emissions per vehicle. Across cities and years, the public health impacts range from more than an order of magnitude less to in excess of the economic impacts. Conclusions: Our analyses indicate that the public health impacts of congestion may be significant enough in magnitude, at least in some urban areas, to be considered in future evaluations of the benefits of policies to mitigate congestion
Sustainability assessment of electrokinetic bioremediation compared with alternative remediation options for a petroleum release site
Sustainable management practices can be applied to the remediation of contaminated land to maximise
the economic, environmental and social benefits of the process. The Sustainable Remediation Forum UK
(SuRF-UK) have developed a framework to support the implementation of sustainable practices within
contaminated land management and decision making. This study applies the framework, including
qualitative (Tier 1) and semi-quantitative (Tier 2) sustainability assessments, to a complex site where the
principal contaminant source is unleaded gasoline, giving rise to a dissolved phase BTEX and MTBE
plume. The pathway is groundwater migration through a chalk aquifer and the receptor is a water supply
borehole. A hydraulic containment system (HCS) has been installed to manage the MTBE plume
migration. The options considered to remediate the MTBE source include monitored natural attenuation
(MNA), air sparging/soil vapour extraction (AS/SVE), pump and treat (PT) and electrokinetic-enhanced
bioremediation (EK-BIO). A sustainability indictor set from the SuRF-UK framework, including priority
indicator categories selected during a stakeholder engagement workshop, was used to frame the assessments.
At Tier 1 the options are ranked based on qualitative supporting information, whereas in Tier
2 a multi-criteria analysis is applied. Furthermore, the multi-criteria analysis was refined for scenarios
where photovoltaics (PVs) are included and amendments are excluded from the EK-BIO option. Overall,
the analysis identified AS/SVE and EK-BIO as more sustainable remediation options at this site than either
PT or MNA. The wider implications of this study include: (1) an appraisal of the management decision
from each Tier of the assessment with the aim to highlight areas for time and cost savings for similar
assessments in the future; (2) the observation that EK-BIO performed well against key indicator categories
compared to the other intensive treatments; and (3) introducing methods to improve the sustainability
of the EK-BIO treatment design (such as PVs) did not have a significant effect in this instance
Refinement of arsenic attributable health risks in rural Pakistan using population specific dietary intake values
Background: Previous risk assessment studies have often utilised generic consumption or intake values when evaluating ingestion exposure pathways. If these values do not accurately reflect the country or scenario in question, the resulting risk assessment will not provide a meaningful representation of cancer risks in that particular country/scenario. Objectives: This study sought to determine water and food intake parameters for one region in South Asia, rural Pakistan, and assess the role population specific intake parameters play in cancer risk assessment. Methods: A questionnaire was developed to collect data on sociodemographic features and 24-hour water and food consumption patterns from a rural community. The impact of dietary differences on cancer susceptibility linked to arsenic exposure was evaluated by calculating cancer risks using the data collected in the current study against standard water and food intake levels for the USA, Europe and Asia. A probabilistic cancer risk was performed for each set of intake values of this study. Results: Average daily total water intake based on drinking direct plain water and indirect water from food and beverages was found to be 3.5 L day-1 (95% CI: 3.38, 3.57) exceeding the US Environmental Protection Agency’s default (2.5 L day-1) and World Health Organization’s recommended intake value (2 L day-1). Average daily rice intake (469 g day-1) was found to be lower than in India and Bangladesh whereas wheat intake (402 g day−1) was higher than intake reported for USA, Europe and Asian sub-regions. Consequently, arsenic-associated cumulative cancer risks determined for daily water intake was found to be 17 in children of 3-6 years (95% CI: 0.0014, 0.0017), 14 in children of age 6-16 years (95% CI: 0.001, 0.0011) and 6 in adults of 16-67 years (95% CI: 0.0006, 0.0006) in a population size of 10000. This is higher than the risks estimated using the US Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization’s default recommended water intake levels. Rice intake data showed early life cumulative cancer risks of 15 in 10000 for children of 3-6 years (95% CI: 0.0012, 0.0015), 14 in children of 6-16 years (95% CI: 0.0011, 0.0014) and later life risk of 8 in adults (95% CI: 0.0008, 0.0008) in a population of 10000. This is lower than cancer risks in countries with higher rice intake and elevated arsenic levels (Bangladesh and India). Cumulative cancer risk from arsenic exposure showed the relative risk contribution from total water to be51%, from rice to be44% and wheat intake 5%. Conclusions: The study demonstrates the need to use population specific dietary information for risk assessment and risk management studies. Probabilistic risk assessment concluded the importance of dietary intake in estimating cancer risk, along with arsenic concentrations in water or food and age of exposed rural population
Development and validation of a high-density SNP genotyping array for African Oil Palm
High-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping arrays are powerful tools that can measure the level of genetic polymorphism within a population. To develop a whole-genome SNP array for oil palms, SNP discovery was performed using deep resequencing of eight libraries derived from 132 Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera palms belonging to 59 origins, resulting in the discovery of >3 million putative SNPs. After SNP filtering, the Illumina OP200K custom array was built with 170 860 successful probes. Phenetic clustering analysis revealed that the array could distinguish between palms of different origins in a way consistent with pedigree records. Genome-wide linkage disequilibrium declined more slowly for the commercial populations (ranging from 120 kb at r2 = 0.43 to 146 kb at r2 = 0.50) when compared with the semi-wild populations (19.5 kb at r2 = 0.22). Genetic fixation mapping comparing the semi-wild and commercial population identified 321 selective sweeps. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) detected a significant peak on chromosome 2 associated with the polygenic component of the shell thickness trait (based on the trait shell-to-fruit; S/F %) in tenera palms. Testing of a genomic selection model on the same trait resulted in good prediction accuracy (r = 0.65) with 42% of the S/F%variation explained. The first high-density SNP genotyping array for oil palm has been developed and shown to be robust for use in genetic studies and with potential for developing early trait prediction to shorten the oil palm breeding cycle
