    M-learning: potencialidades e impacto na Educação Médica

    Com o advento da internet novas oportunidades emergiram, tanto na produção, como na disseminação da informação. Recentes avanços na tecnologia e no seu fabrico colocaram o poder da internet nas mãos de qualquer um que a deseje usar. A rápida adoção e integração das tecnologias móveis na prática clínica têm remodelado o quadro da prestação de cuidados de saúde. E com isto, o panorama da aprendizagem alterou-se drasticamente na última década, tendo sido alvo de tremendas alterações com a ubiquidade dos dispositivos móveis. O m-learning assume-se, portanto, como uma enorme e potencial ferramenta de apoio na formação das futuras gerações médicas. Gerações estas que já nasceram e cresceram num mundo digital. Esta ferramenta de apoio ao ensino tem demonstrado a sua eficácia dentro do ambiente educativo tradicional, recorrendo a inúmeras possibilidades e ofertas educativas. Contudo, é necessário avaliar a sua pertinência, assim como as suas limitações e o impacto destas na educação médica. A produção de novos conteúdos, uma comunicação eficaz entre os pares num ambiente digital, a plena consciência e compreensão das questões éticas, são alguns dos pontos que exigem ponderação. Quais as possibilidades educativas, via tecnologia móvel, atualmente usadas por estudantes nas ciências médicas? Qual o impacto na Educação Médica de uma aprendizagem baseada nos dispositivos móveis? Estas são algumas das questões passíveis de reflexão e discussão. A tecnologia continuará a evoluir, exponencialmente, e existem algumas tendências emergentes que terão um impacto enorme da educação médica, gerando novas possibilidades de usar e integrar o m-learning.New opportunities emerged with the advent of the internet, both in production and in the dissemination of information. Recent advances in technology and manufacturing have put the power of the internet in the hands of anyone who wishes to use it. The rapid adoption rate and integration of mobile technology by physicians is reshaping the current clinical landscape. Furthermore, the paradygm of learning has changed dramatically in the last decade, being the target of tremendous changes within the ubiquity of mobile devices. Mobile learning is therefore assumed to be a huge and potential support tool in the formation of future medical generations. These generations have born and grown in a digital world. Mobile learning as educational tool has demonstrated its effectiveness within the traditional teaching environment using countless possibilities and educational offerings. However, it is necessary to assess its relevance, as well as its limitations and their impact on medical education. The production of new content, an effective communication between peers in a digital environment and full awareness of ethical issues are some of the points that require attention. What are the educational tools currently used by students in the medical sciences? What is the impact of mobile-based learning on medical education? These are some of the questions that are subject to reflection and discussion. The technology will continue to evolve exponentially, and there are some emerging trends that will have a huge impact on medical education, generating new possibilities to use and integrate mobile learning

    Hábitos Alimentares das Pessoas com Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2 em Portugal: Um Estudo Transversal

    Introdução: A nutrição é uma área de intervenção na prevenção e gestão da diabetes mellitus; por isso, é fulcral promover a capacitação da população para a adoção de hábitos alimentares saudáveis. Ainda que existam alguns estudos nesta área, não se conhecem os principais erros nos hábitos alimentares das pessoas com diabetes em Portugal. Os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar os principais erros nos hábitos alimentares das pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 em Portugal e avaliar a sua relação com variáveis sociodemográficas. Métodos: Estudo transversal multicêntrico, em amostra de conveniência de pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 seguidas em Unidades de Cuidados de Saúde Primários. Aplicação do UK Diabetes and Diet Questionnaire (UKDDQ) – traduzido e adaptado, de julho a outubro de 2022. Análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: Amostra de 550 participantes, 52,2% do sexo feminino, 68,3% com 65 anos ou mais, 55,8% com nível de escolaridade igual ou inferior ao 1.º ciclo do ensino básico, 24,7% com insuficiência económica e tempo desde o diagnóstico médio de 10,60 ± 8,13 anos. Apenas 36,2% da amostra obteve um score UKDDQ considerado saudável. Menos de 50% obteve scores saudáveis para os itens “arroz ou massa ricos em fibras”, “pão integral”, “manteiga, margarina e óleos vegetais” e “vegetais e leguminosas”. Somente 8,9% da amostra obteve score saudável para o consumo de fibras. Cerca de 70,4% obteve score saudável para o consumo de açúcares livres e 54,7% para o consumo de ácidos gordos saturados. Verificou-se a existência de uma correlação com significado estatístico positiva fraca entre o score UKDDQ e a idade (ρ = 0,201, p < 0,001), com escolha mais frequente de alimentos saudáveis com o aumentar da idade. As pessoas do sexo feminino reportaram hábitos alimentares mais saudáveis, particularmente no consumo de fibras e ácidos gordos saturados. Conclusão: A maior parte da nossa amostra não usufruiu do potencial efeito positivo de uma alimentação saudável. Individualizam-se grupos de alimentos cujos consumos devem ser enfatizados ou desencorajados, particularmente, a necessidade de incentivar o consumo de alimentos ricos em fibra. Ações educacionais dirigidas devem ter especial foco em pessoas mais jovens e/ou do sexo masculino

    ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.     Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

    As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora
