My research work aims not only to show how language plays a leading role in the construction of law, understood as a device of power, but also to recognize the effects of legal language on the subject and how it is presented. As well, with this qualitative investigation, I want to determine that the relation discourse, language and law is instrumental in where each concept needs the other to develop its objectives, either generating divergences or solving them, as well as analyzing the different strategies with which the right influences the subject and his concept of "truth". All of the above will be explained taking into account the experience of the last two semesters of my law degree, involving a social service in the university's legal office, with the intention of helping those who do not have the resources to go to a lawyer to solve their legal problems. The above scenario allowed me to apply my research work to a reality that concerns and invites me to take an action that leads to raise new opinions about the exclusion that a specific language can generate, even if it is not intentional.Abogado (a)Pregrad

The methodology of this research is qualitative and descriptive. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with students taking Elementary French and High-intermediate French courses in order to use the methodology of discourse analysis with the purpose of observing how the expectations and motivations around FFL courses change over during the learning process of the students. The theoretical framework of this research is composed, mainly, by the socio-educational model formulated, the expectancy-value theory, and by the research on motivation conducted by Dornyei (1994). The results showed that when students start to learn French, they feel very motivated because they get a lot of linguistic contents that are new to them, which makes them believe that they are advancing in the language learning process. Nevertheless, when they are in the final French courses, they believe that they are no longer improving because the time intensity and the amount of new linguistic contents are reduced. This situation impacts on motivation levels and FFL class attendance during the LLM-PUJ. It is advisable to show teachers and students that language learning is not a process that ascends in a straight line so that there are no unrealistic expectations on the courses that lead to a lack of motivation and low levels of class attendance.

    Get PDF

Particle release from implantoplasty of dental implants and impact on cells

Abstract: Background: With increasing numbers of dental implants placed annually, complications such as peri-implantitis and the subsequent periprosthetic osteolysis are becoming a major concern. Implantoplasty, a commonly used treatment of peri-implantitis, aims to remove plaque from exposed implants and reduce future microbial adhesion and colonisation by mechanically modifying the implant surface topography, delaying re-infection/colonisation of the site. This in vitro study aims to investigate the release of particles from dental implants and their effects on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs), following an in vitro mock implantoplasty procedure with a diamond burr. Materials and methods: Commercially available implants made from grade 4 (commercially pure, CP) titanium (G4) and grade 5 Ti-6Al-4 V titanium (G5) alloy implants were investigated. Implant particle compositions were quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) following acid digestion. HGFs were cultured in presence of implant particles, and viability was determined using a metabolic activity assay. Results: Microparticles and nanoparticles were released from both G4 and G5 implants following the mock implantoplasty procedure. A small amount of vanadium ions were released from G5 particles following immersion in both simulated body fluid and cell culture medium, resulting in significantly reduced viability of HGFs after 10 days of culture. Conclusion: There is a need for careful evaluation of the materials used in dental implants and the potential risks of the individual constituents of any alloy. The potential cytotoxicity of G5 titanium alloy particles should be considered when choosing a device for dental implants. Additionally, regardless of implant material, the implantoplasty procedure can release nanometre-sized particles, the full systemic effect of which is not fully understood. As such, authors do not recommend implantoplasty for the treatment of peri-implantitis

Exploring the association between Alzheimer’s disease, oral health, microbial endocrinology and nutrition

Longitudinal monitoring of patients suggests a causal link between chronic periodontitis and the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the explanation of how periodontitis can lead to dementia remains unclear. A working hypothesis links extrinsic inflammation as a secondary cause of AD. This hypothesis suggests a compromised oral hygiene leads to a dysbiotic oral microbiome whereby Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone periodontal pathogen, with its companion species, orchestrates immune subversion in the host. Brushing and chewing on teeth supported by already injured soft tissues leads to bacteraemias. As a result, a persistent systemic inflammatory response develops to periodontal pathogens. The pathogens, and the host’s inflammatory response, subsequently lead to the initiation and progression of multiple metabolic and inflammatory co-morbidities, including AD. Insufficient levels of essential micronutrients can lead to microbial dysbiosis through the growth of periodontal pathogens such as demonstrated for P. gingivalis under low hemin bioavailability. An individual’s diet also defines the consortium of microbial communities that take up residency in the oral and gastrointestinal (GI) tract microbiomes. Their imbalance can lead to behavioural changes. For example, probiotics enriched in Lactobacillus genus of bacteria, when ingested, exert some anti-inflammatory influence through common host/bacterial neurochemicals, both locally, and through sensory signalling back to the brain. Early life dietary behaviours may cause an imbalance in the host/microbial endocrinology through a dietary intake incompatible with a healthy GI tract microbiome later in life. This imbalance in host/microbial endocrinology may have a lasting impact on mental health. This observation opens up an opportunity to explore the mechanisms, which may underlie the previously detected relationship between diet, oral/GI microbial communities, to anxiety, cognition and sleep patterns. This review suggests healthy diet based interventions that together with improved life style/behavioural changes may reduce and/or delay the incidence of AD

    The Armed Conflict in Colombia

    No full text
-----The armed conflict in Colombia is full of lessons for negotiated conflict resolution. Insofar as this has been a complex and long-lasting confrontation, the armed groups have now become protagonists. Their objectives as much as their use of violence has generated controversy about which actions or responses should be implemented to face such situations. Similarly to other countries, the players concerned have participated in several rapprochements, political dialogues or peace processes by contributing experience in negotiations that involve different sectors of the civil society, state players, the international community, and multilateral organizations. To that effect, it is relevant not only to retake the emergence, characterization and possible motivations of three of the biggest groups outside the law –paramilitary, ELN, FARC– which have participated in the conflict, but also to explore the rapprochement methods the Colombian government and its different administrations have employed with these groups. This way, we can fully understand the complexity and the multiple dimensions in the representation of various views of the conflict evolution and the short, medium, and long-term events in as much as this allows clarification of the continuity and discontinuity that have resulted in seeing the phenomenon from the standpoint of cultural causes, political complexities or economic perspectives.
