Synthetic sensors for saccharides and glycoproteins

    Get PDF
The sensing of biological compounds is of vital importance to the screening and diagnosis of disease. The importance of such assays is due to the correlation observed between the observed levels of biological compounds and diseases such as cancer and diabetes mellitus. Compounds such as sugars and proteins are included in this useful class of molecules which can be used to detect pathology. Currently the detection of these compounds is achieved through the use of other biologically derived molecules- typically antibodies and enzymes. However, sensors based on these compounds can be limited in terms of their stability and suitability. Therefore there is a constant drive for novel detection methods for such molecules. In this context, the aims of the work described herein, are to produce synthetic sensing systems for the selective detection of saccharides and glycoproteins. This work will use principles of nanotechnology and self-assembly to produce surface sensors which exploit the revisable interactions of boronic acids to bind compounds of interest, and which employ surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy to enable the label free reporting of these binding events

Neutron Correlations in the Decay of the First Excited State of 11Li

The decay of unbound excited 11Li was measured after being populated by a two-proton removal from a 13B beam at 71 MeV/nucleon. Decay energy spectra and Jacobi plots were obtained from measurements of the momentum vectors of the 9Li fragment and neutrons. A resonance at an excitation energy of ∼1.2 MeV was observed. The kinematics of the decay are equally well fit by a simple dineutron-like model or a phase-space model that includes final state interactions. A sequential decay model can be excluded

Electrically-driven modulation of surface-grafted RGD peptides for manipulation of cell adhesion

Reported herein is a switchable surface that relies on electrically-induced conformational changes within surface-grafted arginine–glycine–aspartate (RGD) oligopeptides as the means of modulating cell adhesion

Selective glycoprotein detection through covalent templating and allosteric click-imprinting

    Get PDF
A hierarchical bottom-up route exploiting reversible covalent interactions with boronic acids and so-called click chemistry for selective glycoprotein detection is described. The self-assembled and imprinted surfaces confer high binding affinities, nanomolar sensitivity, exceptional glycoprotein specificity and selectivity.</p

Stepwise assembly of an adamantoid Ru4Ag6 cage by control of metal coordination geometry at specific sites

The geometrically pure ‘complex ligand’ fac-[Ru(Lph)3]2+, in which three pendant bidentate binding sites are located on one face of the complex, reacts with Ag(I) ions to form the adamantoid decanuclear cage [{Ru(Lph)3}4Ag6](PF6)14 which contains a 6-coordinate Ru(II) ion at each vertex of a large tetrahedron and a 4-coordinate Ag(I) ion along each edge

Broadband velocity modulation spectroscopy of HfF^+: towards a measurement of the electron electric dipole moment

    Get PDF
Precision spectroscopy of trapped HfF^+ will be used in a search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM). While this dipole moment has yet to be observed, various extensions to the standard model of particle physics (such as supersymmetry) predict values that are close to the current limit. We present extensive survey spectroscopy of 19 bands covering nearly 5000 cm^(-1) using both frequency-comb and single-frequency laser velocity-modulation spectroscopy. We obtain high-precision rovibrational constants for eight electronic states including those that will be necessary for state preparation and readout in an actual eEDM experiment.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 table

The state of the Martian climate

60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes

The Evolution of Compact Binary Star Systems

    Get PDF
We review the formation and evolution of compact binary stars consisting of white dwarfs (WDs), neutron stars (NSs), and black holes (BHs). Binary NSs and BHs are thought to be the primary astrophysical sources of gravitational waves (GWs) within the frequency band of ground-based detectors, while compact binaries of WDs are important sources of GWs at lower frequencies to be covered by space interferometers (LISA). Major uncertainties in the current understanding of properties of NSs and BHs most relevant to the GW studies are discussed, including the treatment of the natal kicks which compact stellar remnants acquire during the core collapse of massive stars and the common envelope phase of binary evolution. We discuss the coalescence rates of binary NSs and BHs and prospects for their detections, the formation and evolution of binary WDs and their observational manifestations. Special attention is given to AM CVn-stars -- compact binaries in which the Roche lobe is filled by another WD or a low-mass partially degenerate helium-star, as these stars are thought to be the best LISA verification binary GW sources.Comment: 105 pages, 18 figure
