CFIUS Now Made in China: Dueling National Security Review Frameworks as a Countermeasure to Economic Espionage in the Age of Globalization
The era of globalization has produced previously unimaginable economic benefits by spurring linkages between countries through trade and foreign investment. This new found interconnectivity, however, also raises national security concerns for countries, such as the United States, that welcome foreign investment in the form of mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers. Part II highlights one such threat stemming from the rise of China and its aggressive foreign investment strategy to acquire American companies in industries critical to national security. In response to the growing threat of economic espionage from foreign investors, the United States created the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS)—a national security review process for foreign mergers and acquisitions. Part III analyzes the evolution of CFIUS, while Part IV introduces China’s freshly minted model for analogous national security reviews. Given the rise of these dueling frameworks in the world’s two largest economies, critics contend that such national security reviews inject non-transparency, uncertainty, and politics into viable investment opportunities. Part V addresses these concerns and demonstrates that such criticisms are either overblown or outweighed in the post-9/11 world
Gauss-Bonnet planar and spherical black hole thermodynamics and holography
In this work, we extend the study in \cite{Bilic:2022psx} incorporating the
/CFT duality to establish a relationship between the local temperatures of
a large () spherical and a () planar Schwarzschild black hole near
the boundary considering Gauss-Bonnet curvature correction in the
gravitational action. We have shown the finite coupling corrections appear in
the local temperature relationships due to the inclusion of Gauss-Bonnet term
in the bulk. By transforming the metric into Fefferman-Graham form, we have
calculated the energy of the conformal fluid at the boundary. Following the
results of fluid/gravity duality, the energy of the conformal fluid at the
boundary is then compared with the black body radiation energy which eventually
leads us to establish the local temperature relationship between spherical and
planar black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity near the boundary.Comment: 17 pages LaTex, comments are welcom
Minimization of Handoff Failure Probability for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
During the past few years, advances in mobile communication theory have
enabled the development and deployment of different wireless technologies,
complementary to each other. Hence, their integration can realize a unified
wireless system that has the best features of the individual networks.
Next-Generation Wireless Systems (NGWS) integrate different wireless systems,
each of which is optimized for some specific services and coverage area to
provide ubiquitous communications to the mobile users. In this paper, we
propose to enhance the handoff performance of mobile IP in wireless IP networks
by reducing the false handoff probability in the NGWS handoff management
protocol. Based on the information of false handoff probability, we analyze its
effect on mobile speed and handoff signaling delay.Comment: 16 Page
Pre-exposure hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis for COVID-19 in healthcare workers: a retrospective cohort
Background: While several trials are ongoing for treatment of Corona virus 2019 (COVID-19), scientific research on chemoprophylaxis is still lacking even though it has potential to flatten the curve allowing us time to complete research on vaccines.Methods: This retrospective cohort study explores the potential of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a pre- exposure prophylaxis for COVID-19 among 106 health care workers (HCW) exposed to COVID-19 patients, at a tertiary care hospital in India where there was an abrupt cluster outbreak within on duty personnel. HCWs who had voluntarily taken HCQ prior to exposure were considered one cohort while those who had not were considered to be the Control group. All participants with a verifiable high-risk contact history were tested for COVID-19 by RT- PCR.Results: The two cohorts were comparable in terms of age, gender, co-morbidity and exposure. The primary outcome was incidence rates of RT-PCR positive COVID-19 infection among HCQ users and Controls.106 HCW were examined of whom 54 were HCQ users. The comparative analysis of incidence of infection between the two groups demonstrated that voluntary HCQ usage was associated with lesser likelihood of developing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection (4 out of 54 HCW), compared to those who were not on it (20 out of 52 HCW), χ2=14.59, p<0.001. None of the HCQ users noted any serious adverse effects.Conclusions: The study demonstrated that voluntary pre- exposure HCQ prophylaxis by HCWs is associated with a statistically significant reduction in risk of SARS-CoV-2.
Effect of acyl chloride functionalized carbon black on mechanical and thermal properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene/polyaniline blend
472-479Pristine Carbon Black (CB) has been first oxidised to introduce carboxylic acid functional group on the surface of CB, followed by treating with thionyl chloride. The presence of acyl chloride group in the resultant product has been ascertained by FTIR spectroscopy. The acyl chloride functionalized CB (CB-Ac) has been used as a filler in Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)/Polyaniline (PANI) blend to improve the mechanical and thermal properties. Further addition of Nanoclay (NC) in the blend has improved the dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrix as confirmed by FESEM images and XRD pattern. The Ultimate Tensile Analysis (UTA) and Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) have been studied. The Young modulus has shown increment of 48% and 66% in case of CB-Ac and CB-Ac/NC filled blend, respectively. The ultimate tensile strength has also been found to be increased in CB-Ac and CB-Ac/NC filled blends. DMA has given the insight about the excellent improvement in damping properties of the composites due to filler addition. Themo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been carried out to ascertain the thermal properties. TGA has revealed the excellent augmentation in the flame retardancy and heat resistance of the composites due to CB-Ac/NC loading. DSC study has further verified the improvement in degree of crystallinity due to interfacial attraction between fillers and polymer matrix
Anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, and anti-breast cancer properties unraveled in yeast carotenoids produced via cost-effective fermentation technique utilizing waste hydrolysate
IntroductionNatural carotenoids are well known for their anti-oxidant property and also shown to have antimicrobial and anticancer efficacy. Production of carotenoids from microbial resources mainly from yeast has attracted commercial interest. Breast cancer has the highest incidence among women, and therapy resistance and lack of effective therapeutic strategies are major treatment bottlenecks, particularly for triple-negative subtypes. Yeast carotenoids are recently being evaluated for affordable, non-toxic, natural product-based therapies. In the present study, we have shown an environment-friendly and inexpensive method for carotenoid production from yeasts, utilizing “mandi” wastes, and investigated the biomedical properties of carotenoids, particularly antineoplastic properties.MethodsVegetable “mandi” waste was used to prepare waste hydrolysate, a culture medium, in which oleaginous red yeast Rhodosporidium sp. was grown. Carotenoid pigments were extracted using the solvent extraction method and analyzed by UV spectroscopy, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities of the extract were evaluated, followed by in silico docking and absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion/toxicity (ADME/T) studies.ResultsCarotenoid extract was found to be composed of three main pigments-β-carotene, torulene, and torularhodin. Extract exhibited significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-breast cancer activities in vitro while being biocompatible. Interestingly, carotenoids have shown better efficacy in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells than ER+PR+ cells. In silico evaluation predicted binding with breast cancer-specific molecular targets, specifically the three components showed good binding energy toward VEGF receptors and good drug likeliness properties, as well as less toxicity.DiscussionThis is the first report on anti-breast cancer activities, particularly targeting TNBC cells by red yeast carotenoids (β-carotene, torulene, and torularhodin) produced via a sustainable environment-friendly bioprocess utilizing waste hydrolysate

In the present study Immunoglobulin G was purified from serum of Yak by gel filtration chromatography on Sephacryl S-200. SDS- PAGE of purified yak IgG showed four major polypeptides of 62.94 kDa, 53.29 kDa 29.22 and 28.21 kDa. Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV
Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
